In this paper, robotic regrasping is considered with the goal of achieving dexterous manipulation. The strategy using quick wrist snap is based on human regrasping, and involves rotating the grasped object due to the inertial force while maintaining the contact state. The posture of the grasped object is measured by high-speed vision in real time and is used for posture control. Experimental results are shown where regrasping of a stick-type object in the direction contrary to gravity can be achieved by a high-speed robot hand. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study, it is aimed to estimate the probability of a customer who comes to the institution for the first time to make a transaction in the next 3 months, using data-driven machine learning models, in order to provide financing to the seller company by assigning the receivables arising from the sale of goods and services in a company actively operating in the factoring sector. Accordingly, it was aimed to directly contribute to the transaction volume on a business basis by acting and taking action with more effective, efficient and correct approaches by finding high-potential and low-potential customers. In this context, provided by KKB (Credit Registration Bureau);The data set to he used in machine learning models was created with feature engineering and exploratory data analysis, using the Risk, Mersis, GIB information of the prospective customers and the historical information of the customers, check issuers, customer representatives and branches kept in the database. Since the leads coming to the institution are in two different types of organizations (Individual and Legal), two different forecasting models were applied. Multiple classification models were tried, and the highest F1-Score of 86% for private companies was obtained with the Random Forest model, and the highest F1- Score for commercial companies was obtained with the Random Forest model with 82%. © 2022 IEEE.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal autosomal inherited disorder that affects all races and ethnicities in the United States. However, it is mostly predominant in the Caucasian populace accounting for about 80% of all CF cases. CF most severe complication can be referred to as pulmonary bronchiectasis and infections of the airways, nonetheless, the devastating effects of the disease have far-reaching consequences beyond lung damage. CF is a heterogeneous disease that is caused by mutations in Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene. The impairment or absence of this gene can affect multiple organs and systems and is characterized not only by chronic lung blockage, infections, and inflammation but also by exocrine gland dysfunction, intestinal obstruction, liver pathology, elevated sweat chloride concentration, and in males, infertility due to the congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens. To this end, we briefly explore the pathological effects of CF and how CF mediates the destruction of several critical organs in the body and some of the gene therapeutical approaches such as gene editing and viral-based strategies available for the treatment of this multi-organ disease.

The industrial landscape has witnessed a growing demand for components exhibiting superior performance and extended lifespan, especially in parts made of stainless steels like AISI 409 steel, widely used in automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and lightweight structural components. This study investigates the enhancement of surface properties of AISI 409 stainless steel through cathodic cage plasma nitriding (CCPN) and cathodic cage plasma deposition (CCPD) processes, focusing on the novel implementation of duplex treatments. The research aims to improve the mechanical strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the steel by forming nitrides and vanadium nitride films on its surface. The duplex treatments, specifically N400D450 and N450D450, were found to significantly enhance the hardness of AISI 409 stainless steel, with the N450D450 sample achieving a maximum hardness of 1100 HV—a 461.22% increase compared to the untreated steel. This enhancement is attributed to the formation of a thick, uniform nitrided layer followed by a vanadium nitride film. The critical role of processing order was highlighted, with the sequence of nitriding followed by deposition proving more effective than the reverse. Corrosion resistance was markedly improved in the duplex-treated samples. The N450D450 sample exhibited an Ecorr of -198 mV and reduced jcorr values, indicating superior resistance to corrosive environments. These results underscore the synergistic effect of combining nitriding and vanadium deposition, which optimizes the formation of protective surface layers. Overall, this study demonstrates that duplex treatments significantly enhance the surface properties of AISI 409 stainless steel, offering the potential for extended component lifespan and reduced maintenance in industrial applications. The findings suggest that careful control of process parameters and treatment sequence is essential for achieving optimal results. © 2024, The Authors. All rights

Thermal Analysis of Pv Module Cells Using Optical Fiber Bragg Gratings for a Water Pumping System

This work presents the use of fiber optic sensors, based on Bragg gratings, for monitoring and analyzing the thermal behavior of the cells of a photovoltaic module, used to verify the start and end of operation of a solar water pumping system. Sixteen fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBGs) were used, arranged on the front face of the module, allowing the monitoring of the temperature of sixteen cells during the operation of the water pumping system. Due to the fact that the FBG sensors are inscribed in a single-mode fiber segment, they have the particularities of reduced size and weight, resulting in a minimum of shading on the module, making it possible to study the impact of thermal variations caused by environmental and electrical factors in the pumping system of water and thereby verifying its performance and possible potentialities of its use, such as the study of the beginning and end of the water pumping operation. The system started operating above 10.92 W and solar irradiance in the range of 358.24 W/m². It demonstrated that at powers below 10.68 W the solar module could not provide enough energy for the pump. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is the key to unlocking the potential of biomass materials to transform into fuels, materials, and chemicals. In this study, an effective biphasic reaction system composed of a reaction phase (aqueous phase) and an extraction phase (organic phase) was used for the conversion of fructose to 5-HMF. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) composed of different hydrogen bond donors and hydrogen bond acceptors, the ionic liquid [BMIM]Cl, aqueous choline chloride, aqueous betaine hydrochloride, and ethylamine hydrochloride were used as the reaction phase, and different organic solvents, such as methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), toluene, ethyl butyrate, and gamma-valerolactone (GVL), were used as the organic phase. Experiments were conducted under optimal conditions simulated using the reaction surface method to obtain the maximum 5-HMF yield. The highest yields of 5-HMF obtained in reactions with DESs were 67.86%, 68.69%, and 71.40% for ChCl : OA, ChCl : Lac, and EaCl : Lac, respectively. However, adding dimethyl sulfoxide and betaine hydrochloride aqueous solution to the fructose conversion system resulted in a maximum yield of 90.42% ± 1.46% of 5-HMF without the use of catalysts. This study also demonstrated that betaine hydrochloride could be effectively reused four times. A 5-HMF yield of at least 80% indicates a green process suited towards sustainable development. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

This study investigated ultrasound-assisted extraction using ethanol from Chlorella sorokiniana-derived carotenoids and encapsulation by co-crystallization. The carotenoid extract was quantified and identified (HPLC-DAD) and its encapsulation efficiency was assessed. Co-crystals were analyzed for FTIR spectra, morphology (SEM) and stability (moisture, water activity, carotenoid content, and color) over 90 days. Their potential as a natural dye in gelatin was also evaluated. Lutein and β-carotene were the major carotenoids, with an encapsulation efficiency of 53%. FTIR analysis of the co-crystals demonstrated characteristic functional groups of sucrose and carotenoids, while SEM revealed a porous structure with particles diameters ranging from 2 μm to 20 μm. Over storage, moisture, and water activity increased, while carotenoid content decreased. Yellow remained stable in co-crystals for 90 days, whereas gelatin powder showed reduced red and yellow colors. The color of the ready-to-serve gelatin remained stable for seven days. Co-crystals can replace artificial dyes and sugar in gelatin. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we describe the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) implementation of our City-LES code on detailed large eddy simulations, including the multi-physical phenomena on fluid dynamics, heat absorption and reflection by surface and building materials, cloud effects, and even sunlight effect. Because a detailed simulation involving these phenomena is required for analyses at the street level and several meters of resolution, the computation amount is enormous, and ordinary CPU computation cannot provide sufficient performance. Therefore, we implemented the entire code on GPU clusters with large-scale computing. We applied OpenACC coding to incrementally implement relatively easy programming and eliminate data transfers between the CPU and GPU memories. Based on this research, we determined that the elimination of data transfers is effective, even in the case where a part of the code execution on the GPU is slower than the CPU, owing to the absence of spatial parallelism. The objective of this study is to perform a complete climate simulation on a few square-kilometers field around the Tokyo Station, considering the finest resolution of the original highlighted area of the Marathon race in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. We successfully transferred the entire code to the GPU to provide approximately eight times the performance of CPU-only computation on multi-GPU per node with a large scale cluster. © 2022, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

The purpose of this article is to review recent PIV Studies from the basic to hybrid analysis, focusing on explaining epoch-making development of PIV. The overwhelming advantage of PIV over other velocity measurement methods is that it enables instantaneous and simultaneous velocity measurement of whole flow fields. We roughly classify PIV development and/or progress into the following five categories; A) Basics of PIV and post-processing. B) Simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature, and 3D-PIV. C) Application to multiphase turbulent flows. D) Application to fluid machinery. E) Hybridization of PIV and CFD. This paper introduces the epoch-making research results from papers published in international journals as milestones related to (A) to (E), and concludes with additional forecast of future development of PIV research.

Theoretically, ocean waves contain enough mechanical energy to supply the entire world’s demand and, as of late, are seen as a promising source of renewable energy. To this end, several different technologies of Wave Energy Converters (WEC) have been developed such as Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices. OWCs are characterized by a chamber in which water oscillates inside and out in a movement similar to that of a piston. This movement directs air to a chimney where a turbine is attached to convert mechanical energy. The analysis conducted was based on the Constructive Design Method, in which a numerical study was carried out to obtain the geometric configuration that maximized the conversion of wave energy into mechanical energy. Three degrees of freedom were used: The ratio of height to length of the hydropneumatic chamber (H1/L), the ratio of the height of the chimney to its diameter (H2/d) and the ratio of the width of the hydropneumatic chamber to the width of the wave tank (W/Z). A Design of Experiments (DoE) technique coupled with Central Composite Design (CCD) allowed the simulation of different combinations of degrees of freedom. This allowed the construction of Response Surfaces and correlations for the efficiency of the system depending on the degrees of freedom (width and height of the chamber), as well as the optimization of the system based on the Response Surfaces. © 2021 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.
