Folding angle and wing flexibility influence the flight performance of origami winged fruits

Winged fruits possess a unique flight mechanism relying on simple geometric structures rather than neuromuscular control. This study proposes an innovative approach using origami techniques to create three-winged model fruits, serving as a proxy for understanding the flight dynamics of natural winged fruits. Paper is employed to simulate inherent wing flexibility, with the option to add plastic frames for rigidity. We comprehensively investigate the free fall motion of both rigid and flexible winged fruits through experimental and numerical analyses. Velocity–time curves reveal a three-stage descent pattern—acceleration, deceleration, and steady states. The overshoot phenomenon is attributed to rapid lift increase due to leading-edge vortices attaching stably to the wings. This insight sheds light on aerodynamics governing fruit flight. Compared with rigid wings, flexible wings exhibit two key properties—slower descent and higher self-orienting capability—that facilitate a more stable and longer-distance dispersal of seeds under crosswind conditions. Our study demonstrates the potential benefits of flexible wings in natural seed distribution. This study advances our understanding of winged fruit flight dynamics, utilizing origami as a powerful tool for biomimetic investigations. The findings have broad implications, from improving aerodynamic designs to developing efficient micro air vehicles and electronic microfliers, and understanding seed dispersal evolution. This paper introduces an experimental method to detect the motion of an electrostatic Micro-Electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS) resonator in aqueous media. The resonator comprises a micro cantilever beam subject to electrostatic actuation through a side electrode. A Finite Element Method (FEM) model of the resonator is developed to determine the in-plane mode shapes and their natural frequencies in order to facilitate the experimental study. The motion of the resonator lead to variations in its capacitance and induce a current. The developed experiments demonstrate that motion-induced current can be measured and analyzed to detect the motion of the resonator's higher-order modes and can be used in chemical sensing. © 2024 IEEE.

The presence of heavy metals such as arsenic(As)and chromium(Cr)can be considered one of the most toxic heavy *** study aims to develop and evaluate a graphene oxide(GO)based material functionalized with ferrihydrite for the removal of As(V)in the presence of Cr(VI).The adsorbent ferrihydrite-functionalized graphene oxide(GOFH)was characterized by SEM,FTIR,XRD,XPS,surface charge,BET and *** adsorption capacities for As(V)and Cr(VI)were 160 and 66 mg g^(-1)respectively at pH 4 and 298 K,fitting the Langmuir *** binary systems,GOFH adsorbed As(V)with an adsorption capacity of 137 mg g^(-1)in the presence of 20 mg L^(-1)Cr(VI)at room *** analysis revealed an exothermic and spontaneous ***,GOFH effectively removed several coexisting anions from groundwater,including SO_(4)^(2-),CO_(3)^(2-)and Cl^(-).This work evidences the potential of GOFH for competitive adsorption of priority pollutants from complex *** GOFH material represents a technically and economically viable technology for application in groundwater decontamination,as it requires inexpensive precursors and ambient conditions during synthesis and operation.

UV exposure, soil burial, and storage ability tests were carried out on biocomposite films with different concentrations of nanocrystal cellulose to study their biodegradability and morphological properties compared to neat whey protein films. The addition of nanocrystal cellulose as a natural filler to the whey protein based film can change a variety of properties such as strength, shelf life, biodegradability, and resistance to environmental conditions that are required in food packaging. The degradation films were assessed by UV exposure and soil burial tests. On the other hand, packaging ability is analyzed through storage tests under controlled conditions. After the analysis, changes in physical, chemical, and morphological properties were observed in the biocomposite film. From these results, we can conclude that the whey protein film with the addition of 3% nanocrystal cellulose would be a more favorable choice because of its better properties and suitability for the proposed biodegradable food packaging application. © 2023

Foot amputation can happen due to several factors and cause severe changes in the individual's gait pattern, reduces mobility and generates injuries. Over the past two decades, researchers have dedicated efforts to develop transtibial pros-theses capable of reproducing healthy foot movement to help the amputee rehabilitation process. This work presents the digital prototype, dynamic modeling and preliminary control of an active ankle-foot prosthesis. The powertrain of the devices is composed of a EC 60 flat 200 W motor coupled to a CPL-20A-50-2 51:1 harmonic drive to generate active torque for the user. Results indicate that the projected prosthesis is promising for the proposed function, with 1.633 kg, a height of 168.57 mm and capable of generating up to 1.02 N.m/kg of torque and 5.39 rad/s of angular velocity, considering a time span of 1 second for the gait cycle on level ground. © 2022 IEEE.

A time accurate and high resolution numerical method for gas-liquid two-phase flows is proposed. The artificial viscous terms in the flux splitting of upwinding are derived by using the preconditioner to enhance the stability of computation for compressible and incompressible combined flow with arbitrary void fractions. A homogeneous equilibrium gas-liquid two-phase model taken account of the compressibility of mixed media is used. A finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and a Roe-type flux splitting method with the MUSCL TVD scheme are employed. By this method, a one-dimensional two-phase shock tube problem was computed and confirmed the applicability to the unsteady and arbitrary Mach number flow problems. Learning from Demonstration (LfD) enables robots to learn new tasks through an imitation process. This methodology can be combined with Behavior-Based Control (BBC), which facilitates the abstraction of behaviors for the robot by dividing them into micro-behaviors. These can be implemented using Artificial Neural Networks trained by bio-inspired algorithms. In this work, a novel methodology based on the LfD and BBC methods is proposed for controlling soccer robots, specifically for the Very Small Size Soccer (VSSS) category, which demands quick and dynamic responses. Simulations using CoppeliaSim were conducted to demonstrate how the proposed methodology can be used for path planning and path-following problems in the IEEE VSSS category.

This paper presents the design and construction of a low-cost combat robot named Artemis, developed for participation in the Robocore Experience 2024 competition. The project emphasizes the integration of cost-effective components and innovative methodologies to create a competitive robot. This paper addresses a new concept of chiral metastructure the so-called elliptical S-shape chiral. All five groups of metamaterials studied exhibited large anisotropy. This the anisotropic behavior is controlled by the ellipses' eccentricities. Moreover, the anisotropic response is also more evident when the loading axes are considered. For x-axis compressive loading conditions, the stiffness decreases as the ellipse eccentricity increases. The Poisson ratio's magnitude increases with the increase of a/b aspect ratio, showing a very high auxeticity when the ellipse is close to a flat configuration. In this case, the Poisson ratio was near to -18. For y-axis compressive loadings, the stiffness increases with the decrease of a/b aspect ratio leading to a flexible metastructure. The Poisson ratio's values decreases with the increasing of a/b aspect ratio, but all values were near zero (between -0.35 and -0.05). It seems that the transversal section practically does not change when the metastructure is compressed through y-direction. © 2023 by DEStech Publications, Inc. and American Society for Composites.
