In this paper, we propose a novel hands-free interface for robot-assisted operation. Surgeons use both hands during surgery, making difficult for them to operate the display. However, by using a modality other than the hands to operate the display, the surgeon can check the necessary information for the operation in real time. Therefore, we developed a system that recognizes breath from the temperature change on the mask surface. Then, we compared the proposed system with a directly recognized breath method. Consequently, the proposed method had the same performance as directly recognized breath method and minimized the risk of contamination. We believe that the application of our developed system will contribute to the improvement of safety and efficiency in the medical field.

Accurate prediction of electronic and optical excitations in van der Waals(vdW)materials is a long-standing challenge for density functional *** recent Wannier-localized optimally-tuned screened range-separated hybrid(WOT-SRSH)functional has proven successful in non-empirical determination of electronic band gaps and optical absorption spectra for covalent and ionic ***,for vdW materials the tuning of the material-and structure-dependent functional parameters has only been attained ***,we present a non-empirical WOT-SRSH approach applicable to vdW materials,with the optimal functional parameters transferable between monolayer and *** apply this methodology to prototypical vdW materials:black phosphorus,molybdenum disulfide,and hexagonal boron nitride(in the latter case including zero-point renormalization).We show that the WOT-SRSH approach consistently achieves accuracy levels comparable to experiments and many-body perturbation theory(MBPT)calculations for band structures and optical absorption spectra,both on its own and as an optimal starting point for MBPT calculations.

In recent years, the increasing demand for electric vehicles, digital devices such as PCs and smartphones, and renewable energy storage systems has created a need for higher-performance batteries. Accordingly, the thermal conductivity of the case that houses the battery is becoming increasingly important. In this study, compositions with high thermal conductivity and good castability were investigated, focusing on Mg-Al-Ca alloys, and the relationship between the two was examined through thermal conductivity measurements and microstructural observations. As a result, the Mg-6%Al-4%Ca alloy was optimal in terms of castability and thermal conductivity. It was confirmed that a lower Al solid solution capacity and a higher purity of the matrix phase are important to improve the thermal conductivity. It is also suggested that the second phase, platelet Al2Ca, is likely to be recognized and enriched in the matrix, contributing to the improvement of thermal conductivity. The amount of Ca solid solution in the matrix was suggested to be reduced by the enrichment of Al in the matrix. The Ca solid solution in the matrix was found to be less effective in reducing thermal conductivity than the Al solid solution. © 2024 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

Proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) controllers have been widely adopted for industrial applications. However, these controllers are not very efficient for non-linear systems. Artificial neural networks (ANN) based on the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) have great potential to replace PID controllers due to their polynomial structure, allowing complex non-linear systems to be controlled. This article introduces the integration of four MLPs as alternatives to a traditional PID controller. These MLPs were trained through four bioinspired algorithms tailored for following tasks in mobile robots. The bioinspired algorithms employed for MLP network training include Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO), Month-Flame Optimization (MFO), and Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (AHA). A comparative analysis was conducted between these MLPs and a classic PID controller, focusing on parameters such as overshoot (OS), settling time (ST), and steady-state error for different simulated scenarios.

In an effort to continue to help provide various and thriving experiences to engineering undergraduates and help increase retention, a mid-size university uses a high impact practice of using peer teachers in the classroom. It is a standard practice to use graduate teaching assistants in most areas of higher education, especially in engineering classes, discussions, labs or just to hold office hours and grade. However, an increasing number of universities have adopted and leveraged undergraduate teaching assistants as it demonstrates to effectively improve students' grades, retention, student self-efficacy, and provide some financial relief to academic institutions [1]. The impact of using peer teachers is especially evident in the first and second years in engineering. Students who participate in the role are third year or above demonstrate expertise, leadership, and an interest in teaching as part of their development. At a mid-size minority serving institution, an undergraduate teaching assistant (termed as teaching fellow) was developed informally in 2005 in the mechanical and chemical engineering department and expanded in 2017 to the entire College of engineering and Informational Technology. In this case study, alumni and current teaching fellows were interviewed to assess the impact of their experiences and how it influenced their educational experience in their major and current career. Several themes were discovered to include increased professional and personal skill sets, self-efficacy in engineering, motivation to participate in the program, impact on career, creation of community and improvements needed to the program. A few teaching fellows decided to continue to be a p12 teacher. © 2022 IEEE.

Location estimation for waypoint-based autonomous driving robots primarily relies on SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technologies. GNSS performs well in open areas but struggles with signal issues, while SLAM offers high accuracy in feature-rich environments but faces challenges in open spaces. This study integrates SLAM and GNSS, enabling seamless switching between systems when one encounters difficulties. The combined system ensures consistency by aligning coordinate systems and directional data. Experiments in indoor, forest, and open environments demonstrate that the switching algorithm enables stable autonomous driving in diverse conditions, effectively leveraging the strengths of both systems. © ICROS 2025.

A joint location-inventory-maintenance model is proposed for a geographically distributed Service Parts Logistics problem. The model uses a reliability-based replacement strategy and is formulated as a quadratic Mixed Integer Linear program which jointly optimizes logistic and preventive part replacement decisions. The proposed solution method employs piecewise linearization to provide a level of tractability and scalability to the method. The newly proposed joint location-inventory-maintenance model is evaluated and benchmarked against traditional local optimum-based replacement approaches. It consistently outperformed the benchmark models, with the efficiency of cost effect improvements determined by the relative prevalence of logistics factors versus asset management costs. © 2025

Solar-powered dryers are still expensive and difficult to obtain for farmers with medium to low production capacity. For this reason, it is necessary to develop technology on a solar-powered dryer with a solar panel capacity of 200WP is equipped with a maximum power point tracker as an integrated solar collector with a photovoltaic system. The system in this solar-powered dryer consists of a solar panel tracker, a rotating aluminum cylinder net, a photovoltaic tracker, a battery bank, a microcontroller, and a DC/AC inverter. This system improves the performance of solar panels in the drying process of Moringa leaves. This design is expect to be the right system to ensure maximum results by providing solar radiation energy in the drying process of agricultural products. The aims goal to minimize problems in the drying of agricultural products experienced by farmers using an automatic dual-energy solar-powered dryer as a development innovation for the drying process. This study uses an experimental methodology and field data collection using a solar-powered dryer that has been analyzed and measured to obtain data comparisons. shows the maximum data of voltage and power response in positioning photovoltaic to produce the increased output power of photovoltaic array. Maximum application of powerpoint tracker on microcontroller based dual energy solar powered dryer on solar panels for drying moringa leaves produces the advantage of maximum energy absorption in solar panels and shortens the time in the drying process of moringa leaves. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this paper, focus is placed on "lightweight and fine powders" which have small particle size and bulk density and exhibit unique sound absorption characteristics at low frequencies due to longitudinal vibration of powder particles. Theoretical analysis of the sound absorption coefficient of powder layers requires the peak frequency of sound absorption measured experimentally. In this study, we clarified the relationship between powder properties and sound absorption characteristics, and predicted the sound absorption coefficient of the powder layer from the experimental equation based on the accumulated data. This made it possible to classify powders in which sound absorption due to longitudinal vibration occurs based on the relationship between the "areal density per particle layer," which is indicated by "particle size multiplied by bulk density," and the peak sound absorption value. Moreover, from the plot of "areal density per particle layer" and "first-order sound absorption peak frequency from experiment," the experimental formula for the first-order sound absorption peak frequency was regressively obtained. By using the experimental equation obtained in this study, it was possible to show how to estimate the sound absorption coefficient from the properties of each powder alone. © 2022 Internoise 2022 - 51st International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control engineering. UV exposure, soil burial, and storage ability tests were carried out on biocomposite films with different concentrations of nanocrystal cellulose to study their biodegradability and morphological properties compared to neat whey protein films. The addition of nanocrystal cellulose as a natural filler to the whey protein based film can change a variety of properties such as strength, shelf life, biodegradability, and resistance to environmental conditions that are required in food packaging. The degradation films were assessed by UV exposure and soil burial tests. On the other hand, packaging ability is analyzed through storage tests under controlled conditions. After the analysis, changes in physical, chemical, and morphological properties were observed in the biocomposite film. From these results, we can conclude that the whey protein film with the addition of 3% nanocrystal cellulose would be a more favorable choice because of its better properties and suitability for the proposed biodegradable food packaging application. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
