Tourism Potential in West Beach Coastal Area of Banten Province Based on Land Use Spatial Pattern

The west beach coastal area of Banten province is very productive. Local governments use this area for various development activities, tourism in particular. This study aims to determine the tourism potential of the west coast of Banten Province based on the spatial pattern of land use by local regulations. Thus, the development of coastal tourism can develop in an integrated and sustainable manner. The research methodology used is literature study, interviews, field verification, spatial analysis (Arc-GIS), and policy analysis based on the Banten Province Spatial Plan. Based on policy analysis related to regional spatial planning in Banten Province, there are three strategic tourism areas on the west coast, including; (a) Sumur Beach corridor, (b) Pandeglang West Coast corridor (Carita-Cigeulis), and (c) Serang West Coast Corridor (Anyer-Cinangka). The West Coast Corridor of The criteria for the physical type of beach suitable for tourism activities is wide beaches, not rocky, freshwater, and far from the highway. The west coast corridor area these criteria is the Serang West Coast Corridor (Anyer - Cinangka), precisely at Anyer Beach and Anyer Kidul Beach.

The sustainability of multilayer plastics waste management in Indonesia is a critical concern, demanding a comprehensive approach. This study employs a Multi-Aspect Sustainability Analysis (MSA) to evaluate and improve the management of multilayer plastic waste. The environmental strategies include developing standards for environmentally friendly technologies, regular monitoring, and in-depth academic studies on waste utilization. Economically, consistent funding, industry-government collaboration, community involvement, and investment policy development are essential. Social strategies emphasize community engagement and capacity building for waste management. Governmental roles involve implementing data-driven plans, enhancing law enforcement, establishing independent organizations, and incentivizing participation. Technological advancements and standardization in recycling technologies are crucial. The study highlights the importance of integrated efforts across environmental, economic, social, and governmental aspects to achieve sustainable waste management, promoting environmental resilience, economic prosperity, and social well-being. The results obtained showed that the sustainability status of waste management of multilayer plastic in Indonesia, special in Surabaya City is sustainable with an index of 53.33%. To increase the sustainability status to be very sustainable, scenario 2 was selected, the optimistic scenario with improvements in 14 sensitive factors to increase the sustainability index to 78.37%. © 2024, The Authors. This study presents an Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to evaluate the management strategies for Human-Orangutan Conflict (HOC) in Aceh, Indonesia. Utilizing an IPA Grid, the research categorizes various management strategies into four quadrants, each reflecting different levels of community-perceived importance and performance. Strategies like “Orangutan-Safe Fences” and “Community-Based natural Resource management (CBNRM) for Orangutans” in Quadrant A are both important and performing well, underscoring the effectiveness of current efforts in these areas. Significantly, “Traditional Measures for Orangutan Deterrence,” which include non-harmful, traditional methods such as the use of specific noise deterrents, physical barriers, and community-led patrols to discourage orangutans from entering human areas, alongside “Quick Response program for Orangutan Incidents,” are placed in Quadrant B. In Quadrant C, “Strengthen Law Enforcement and Conservation Policies” are deemed less crucial and underperforming, suggesting a lower priority for immediate resource allocation. Lastly, Quadrant D includes well-performing but less critical strategies like “Early Warning Systems for Orangutan Presence” and “Raise Local Awareness About Orangutans,” pointing to potential over-investment. The study's findings advocate for a strategic reallocation of resources and highlight the importance of aligning conservation efforts with community priorities for effective and sustainable HOC management. © 2024 The Author(s)

The Effect of Demographic Factors on Waste Generation and Heavy Metal in Illegal Landfill at Malaka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province

The population growth has led to a significant increase in the amount of waste every year. Meanwhile, several demographic factors influencing waste generation in Malaka Regency include an absence of a final landfill. This has caused the illegal dumping of waste which leads to various environmental problems. Therefore, this study aims to (I) analyze the effect of demographic factors on waste generation (II) determine the level of heavy metals and the chemical properties of the soil in the illegal landfill. In this study, the demographic factor sampling was conducted in all districts using a questionnaire to obtain each household sample and waste was weighed directly with the Stratified Random Sampling method. Also, soil samples at the landfill site were obtained through field observation and composite sampling. The results showed that age, gender of each family head, income, occupation, latest education, and the number of family members had a significant effect on waste generation in Malaka Regency. Based on the results, the content of Pb, Cd, and Hg in the soil at different waste disposal sites in Malaka Regency had passed the standard threshold value in soil, which showed that the land had been polluted by heavy metals.

The existence of extractive activities around the river has a negative impact on the quality of river water. This study aims to provide an overview of water quality characteristics and water quality status of Bengkulu River and Nelas River in Bengkulu Province. The data used is river quality monitoring conducted by the Environment and Forestry Service of Bengkulu Province from 2014 to 2019. Measurements are carried out twice a year representing, the dry season (March to June) and the rainy season (September to December). The observation stations representing upstream, middle and downstream of rivers conditions. The parameters observed were physical, chemical, and biological parameters. The water quality status is determined using the Storet Index. The results show that both rivers have Storet Index >-31. It means that these river water are heavily polluted. Parameters that have exceeded the water quality standard are TSS, DO, BOD, COD, Fe, Mn, Cu, and total coliform. The river water quality parameters, especially heavy metals, may be caused by open land being washed and carried into the river body. The existence of population and animal activities as well as industrial waste outlets at upstream also affect the decline of river water quality.

Biofuels are currently the only available bulk renewable fuel. They have, however, limited expansion potential due to high land requirements and associated risks for biodiversity, food security, and land conflicts. We therefore propose to increase output from ethanol refineries in a land-neutral methanol pathway: surplus CO2-streams from fermentation are combined with hydrogen from renewably powered electrolysis to synthesize methanol. We illustrate this pathway with the Brazilian sugarcane ethanol industry using a spatio-temporal model. The fuel output of existing ethanol generation facilities can be increased by 42%-49% or ∼100TWh without using additional land. This amount is sufficient to cover projected growth in Brazilian biofuel demand in 2030. We identify a trade-off between renewable energy generation technologies: wind power requires the least amount of land whereas a mix of wind and solar costs the least. Assessment of catchment water resources allocation under climate change in Luwombwa sub-catchment, Zambia

The uncertainty in climate change and high water demand pose pressure on the natural water resources supply. Not only does this require better understanding but also a call for immediate interventions, mitigation and adaptive measures. This study evaluates catchment water resources in the Luwombwa sub-catchment in Zambia through statistical analysis in the downscaling of past, present and future climatic variables from the CMIP6 climatic model. These variables are then integrated into WEAP - a semi-distributed hydrological and water evaluation model - to perform water demand and allocation scenario modelling. Mult-site calibration and validation were conducted on five selected micro-catchments within Luwombwa sub-catchment. The model performance was assessed usng the R², NSE and PBIAS as the objective functions. Satisfactory values of 92 % for R², 82 % for NSE and 6.9 % for PBIAS were achieved. This allowed for scenario modelling on water demand and allocation among competing users. Three future scenarios (2022–2050) were developed from the historical to baseline (1988–2022) and included state of water resources availability under climate change, expansion of irrigation area and impact of dam construction in the sub-catchment. The study reveals a decrease of 20 % in sub-catchment's water availability resulting from 9.3 % (equivalent to 4^oC) rise in maximum temperature and 4.5 % reduction in rainfall within the entire sub-catchment. This is especially under the persistence of SSP370 climate variability scenario projections downscaled from four GCM models by the year 2050. The study further revealed that the change point for anticipated future climate extremes is likely to occur between 2027 and 2030. The results are indicative of downward trends in streamflow under climate change and socioeconomic development leading to increase in water value and water scarcity. The implementation of community-based forest management (CBFM) schemes within the protection forest management unit (PFMU) Sijunjung, Indonesia

Community-Based Forest management (CBFM) has been implemented in West Sumatra Province since 2012 targeting 500,000 ha State forest land. It is part of a total of 12,7 million ha of forest areas designated for CBFM in Indonesia. This paper aims to describe the implementation of CBFM schemes in the working area of PFMU Sijunjung in terms of its institutional and forest utilization activities by the local community, beneficiaries of CBFM. This study was carried out in three CBFM with the forest size ranging from 217 – 504 ha. CBFM schemes implemented in this area consist of Community Plantation Forest (CPF), Community Forestry (CF), and Village or Nagari Forest (VF). The data were collected through observation and key informant interviews. The study found that Community Forestry and Community Plantation Forest are managed by re-institutionalizing existing local institutions. In contrast, Nagari Forest is managed by new institutions established by the village government. Institutional formation in each CBFM scheme is motivated by government policy. Institutions of Community Forestry and Community Plantation Forest are secure enough in terms of institutional activities, agreed rules and restrictions applied, the beneficiaries community only harvest Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). This practice may lead to sustainable forest resource use. On the other hand, the new institution of Nagari forest has created a conflict of interest between the parties so that the institution becomes weak, and the rules in management are not easy to be agreed. Consequently, the community still widely practice illegal logging in various scale. This study concludes that CBFM practice should consistently encourage local institutions as the core of forest management, as stated in the PFMU long-term plan instead of establishing new institutions. Therefore, the CBFM program should strengthen local institutions and promote synergy among multi-stakeholders.

Role of Lactobacillus sakei strain pro7 to reduce dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane level

Several species of bacteria can be utilized to degrade the residual insecticides. One of them was chosen from the genus Lactobacillus. The purposes of soils in Merdeka Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia as well as to investigate bacteria which is capable of surviving in DDT-contaminated soil. Method for the residual analysis of the soil utilizes Quechers tube, and the bacterial propagation were performed in the medium mineral 4 (MM4). Purification to bacterial isolates was carried out in the Plate Count Agar (PCA) medium and subsequently followed by morphological identification. The results of this study show that the soil were contaminated by O'P'-DDT ranging from 2.2 μgKg-1 to 9.0 μgKg-1. Phylogenetic analysis proves that the Lactobacillus sakei Strain PRO7 bacteria was identified. The growth rate of DDT biodegradation by Lactobacillus sakei Strain PRO7 bacteria is noted the highest at 7.89 observation and reaches 95.1% of biodegradation percentage at the 20 ppm DDT concentration.
