Valley Density Evaluation and Typical Development Pattern in Mountainous Areas of Beijing

Based on geographical differences and space differentiation, valley economy is a new pattern and new perspective for the development of mountainous areas, integrating ecological protection, industrial nurture, and village integration. On the basis of natural and geographical differentiation of valley, we give an overview of the spatial distribution of valley in mountainous areas of Beijing and spatial difference in valley density, and sum up the typical development pattern of valley economy, using DEM data. The results show that the spatial distribution of valley presents an asymmetric shape of inverted V or branch; Miyun, Yanqing, and Changping have high valley density, while Pinggu, Fangshan and Mentougou have low valley density; there is a significant positive relationship between valley density and the spatial distribution of river and reservoir. The development pattern of valley economy is divided into five types: leisure and high-end upgrade-based pattern, ecological development and transition demonstration-based pattern, folk culture and creation-driven pattern, scenic spots-driven and valley-linked pattern and leisure agriculture and specialty-led pattern.

Predation on Atlantic Salmon Smolts by Striped Bass after Dam Passage

We documented predation on smolts of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar by striped bass Morone saxatilis foraging in the tailrace of the Essex Dam on the Merrimack River, Lawrence, Massachusetts, and assessed factors that may affect smolt susceptibility to predation. During 6 d of diurnal angling from 6 to 28 May, we captured 212 striped bass, 41 of which contained prey remains. More than 48% of striped bass that contained prey had consumed smolts. Atlantic salmon smolts composed more than 80% of the total mass of prey remains recovered and included both individuals of stocked-fry and stocked-smolt origin. Based on information from this pilot study, a focused investigation of striped bass predation on smolts after passage of the Essex Dam began in 1998.

The N-oxidation of alkylpyridines by hydrogen peroxide is a reaction widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. This reaction is accompanied by the undesired gas-generating decomposition reaction of hydrogen peroxide. The oxygen generation, combined with the flammability of the alkylpyridines, represents a serious hazard of fire and explosion. In this work, a new operation strategy and reactor type for the N-oxidation of alkylpyridines are proposed based on calorimetrically obtained data. Previous studies on this system [8] showed that Langmuir-Hinshelwood type kinetics fits well with the Noxidation of this family of reactions and that increased temperature and catalyst concentration favor the N-oxidation reaction. New calorimetric measurements have been performed over an extended range of temperatures and catalyst concentrations in a closed reactor. These measurements confirm that the N-oxidation of alkylpyridines can actually be performed in a much more efficient and inherently safer manner if a closed reactor is used. The advantages and characteristics of such a reactor are explained and a preliminary design is proposed.

We investigated plant richness-biomass relationships in tall grass (Field 1, 12 years) and mixed grass (Field 2, 5 years) restoration experiments located in the northern Great Plains grasslands (USA). They were organized as randomized factorial experiments with fertilization rates (N or P) and number of species as factors. Results were as follows: (1) above ground biomass (AGB) increased and year-to-year variability declined with plant species and functional form richness. (2) AGB was higher when the species had various combinations: (a) high relative growth rates, root density, root surface area, N or P uptake rates, and N use efficiency;(b) low root-to-shoot ratio and root plasticity. (3) Biomass stability was positively related to high root surface area in Field 1 and N use efficiency and P uptake rates in Field 2. It was with great excitement that we planned the combined meetings of Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) and the International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) with the 33rd Milford Aquaculture Seminar (MAS). Bringing these different but complementary audiences together resulted in a meeting that combined many different aspects of fisheries restoration and aquaculture under one *** hundred attendees including government representatives, research scientists, industry, and academia at both the university and vocational high school levels attended this event. The meeting commenced on Wednesday December 12th 2012, with over eighty people attending seven field trips to area aquaculture farms and research facilities. The formal program began on Thursday, December 13th with a plenary session including invited speakers Eric Schwabb, Acting Assistant Secretary for Conservation and management at NOAA; Sebastian Belle, Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Association and Boze Hancock from the Nature Conservancy, who discussed the role of aquaculture in fisheries restoration. John Bullard, the Northeast Regional Administrator of NOAA Fisheries Service, addressed the group during the luncheon the following day. The technical papers and workshops presented were divided into 35 sessions over three days of the meeting and included topics such as the history of aquaculture, aquaculture hatchery innovations, siting and planning issues, risk management, aquaculture business management, ocean acidification, climate change, as well as aquaculture disease issues and potential remedies. Having persons present who have experienced problems and successes, along with those in manufacturing and government responsible for addressing concerns and sharing best practices, was invaluable. Discussions among this cross-section of persons who represent different aspects of aquaculture were as important as the well-presented and interesting formal papers

The science and management of environmental- and water-related issues requires an interdisciplinary approach, as recognized by funding agencies, consulting firms, and public organizations. In their role of preparing students for productive professional careers, academic institutions should be able to train students in interdisciplinary approaches, but complications exist in current academic environments that make interdisciplinary education especially challenging. We provide a vision of interdisciplinary graduate education in water and environmental resources in 2050 after presenting a brief assessment of current issues in interdisciplinary education. © 2010 ASCE.

This paper briefly introduces the development of agricultural insurance in China's history and the latest progress in agricultural insurance *** five counties which perform the crop insurance pilot in Hunan Province,through discussion with the provincial and county-level Government,the insurance company personnel and interviews with farmers,this paper introduces the implementation of crop insurance pilot in grass-roots level,analyzes current problems and proposes relevant policy recommendations.
