Climate data that has limitation on spatial and temporal scale becomes an obstacle in perform the climate-related research such us crop simulation, climate risk assessment and many others. Regional climate models such as RegCM4 can produce adequate outcomes of climate data in term of spatial and temporal sides. Output data from RegCM4 can be used for further research once it has been through correction process. On this study, statistical bias correction with three different transfer function (i.e. linear regression, second order polynomials and third order polynomials) were tested. The correction process that has been done on the RegCM4 rainfall data in Indramayu Regency by using third order polynomials-transfer function is able to produce climatology data with value close to observation data. Similarity between observation data and the corrected RegCM4 output data is indicated by similar temporal and spatial distributions. Based on the historical climate and projection of rainfall (1981-2065), it is known that annual rainfall will decrease by 0.84 mm/year. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Extensification efforts in agriculture to increase paddy production can be done through the selection of land for the development of paddy fields from available land. Every inch of land has different characteristics, which can be used for the selection of land suitable for a use, including for paddy fields. This study aims to delineate available land and set priorities for the development of paddy fields in Subang Regency. The main methodology used is a multicriteria-based land evaluation. The land attribute is weighted using the AHP technique from the assessment of 8 experts. Land availability was obtained from a combination of Weighted Linear Combination method and Geographic Information System. The results of the study found suitable land for paddy field extensification. Prioritization results showed that 76,115 hectares of land had high priority, 7,165 hectares had moderate priority, 55,280 hectares had low priority, and an area of 19,561 hectares is land that is not recommended for use. The land available for extensification of paddy fields from suitable land is 9,885 hectares with a composition of 73.24% (7,240 hectares) high priority, 21.20% (2,096 hectares) moderate priority, 3.36% (530 hectares) low priority, and 0.19% (19 hectares) are not recommended for paddy field extensification. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Improvements to modern portfolio theory based models applied to electricity systems

With the increase of variable renewable energy sources (VRES) share in electricity systems, many studies were developed in order to determine their optimal technological and spatial mix. Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) has been frequently applied in this context. However, some crucial aspects, important in energy planning, are not addressed by these analyses. We, therefore, propose several improvements and evaluate how each change in formulation impacts results. More specifically, we address generation costs, system demand, and firm energy output, present a formal model and apply it to the case of Brazil. We found that, after including our proposed modifications, the resulting efficient frontier differs strongly from the one obtained in the original formulation. Portfolios with high output standard deviation are not able to provide a firm output level at competitive costs. Furthermore, we show that diversification plays an important role in smoothing output from VRES portfolios. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This research explores the development of effective corporate governance strategies for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) by evaluating both critical decision criteria and innovative organizational models. Based on an extensive literature review, seven governance criteria were identified: credibility and non-profit orientation, regular information flow and transparency, level of institutionalization, frequency of leadership turnover, internal and external stakeholder relations, annual budget, and ideological or religious motivation. In addition, five innovative organizational models were selected as strategic alternatives: continuous learning organization, technology-oriented policy development, income diversification, pluralistic governance, and transformational leadership. The empirical data were gathered through interviews with 16 experts from academia, civil society, and public institutions in Türkiye. To address the complexity and uncertainty of decision-making processes, a hybrid type-2 neutrosophic number (T2NN) multi-criteria decision-making methodology is introduced. The T2NN-ranking comparison and T2NN-criteria importance through intercriteria correlation methods are used to determine the weight of criteria, while T2NN-stable preference ordering towards ideal solution is utilized to rank the alternative models. Results show that the level of institutionalization is the most significant criterion, and income diversification is the most effective organizational model for improving NGO sustainability. The study not only provides practical guidance for NGO leaders but also introduces a robust methodological approach applicable to governance challenges under uncertain conditions.

Sustainable flexible pavement base stabilization with pozzolanic materials incorporating sodium hydroxide and asphalt emulsion

For the sustainable viewpoint in the road construction sector, fly ash (FA) as one of the potential industrial by-products for recycling would be on finding its alternative utilization. In this study, FA and hydrated lime (HL) as the pozzolanic materials were improved using the sodium hydroxide in a solid form (NaOH) and the asphalt emulsion (AE) for being a road base stabilizer. Effects of additional NaOH and AE into the FA-HL binder were investigated through mechanical properties, structural formation, and durability. Study results revealed that using NaOH increased the compressive strength but decreased the workability of the FA-HL binder. Since NaOH stimulated the FA-HL binder to fabricate cementitious products as N-A-S-H gels. The addition of AE in the FA-HL binder with NaOH could prolong the hardening process, indicating the retardation on the structural formation of pozzolanic reaction and polymerization. Besides, NaOH and AE as the FA-HL treated base material additives had an insignificant effect on the compaction characteristic. Using NaOH and AE into the FA-HL treated base material could develop proficient bearing strength and durability in the wet-dry deterioration. According to these experiments, adding NaOH and AE into the FA-HL binder for road base stabilization can reach the minimum criteria of the flexible pavement base. Eventually, the pozzolanic materials essentially require the extra additives for a new road base stabilization based on eco-friendliness. © 2021 The Author(s)

Height-Diameter Modeling of Cinnamomum tamala Grown in natural Forest in Mid-Hill of Nepal

Tree height (H) and diameter at breast height (D) are key variables to calculate tree volume and biomass. We developed a height-diameter (H-D) model for Cinnamomum tamala by evaluating 18 nonlinear models. Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), mean bias, Mean Absolute Error (MAE), graphical appearance, and biological logic were the criteria used to evaluate the predictive performance of the models. Gompertz model (M14) performed the best for predicting the total height of C. tamala trees with the least RMSE (1.742 m), mean bias (0.012 m), and MAE (1.342 m) and satisfied model assumptions and biological logic. Validation data ranked the Gompertz model as the best model with RMSE (1.546 m), mean bias (-0.106 m), and MAE (1.149 m). Despite the consistent performance of the Gompertz model, it tended to underestimate the height prediction for taller (dominant crown class) and larger trees. Further work on refitting and validation of the proposed model with data from a larger geographic area, wider-ranging sites, and stand conditions is recommended. © 2018 Mukti Ram Subedi et al.

Recuperation of the terra firme forest understory bird fauna eight years after a wildfire in eastern Acre, Brazil

The present study evaluated the characteristics of the understory bird fauna of four fragments of terra firme forest in eastern Acre, Brazil, that were impacted by wildfires in 2005. The study investigated the species richness and the composition of trophic guilds using mist-netting on eight transects (four in burned plots and four in control plots in the same forest fragments). Eight plots (0.12 ha) were also established parallel to each transect to record the number of live trees (DBH ≥ 10 cm), palms, and dead trees. Bamboo stems were quantified in 0.024 ha subplots. No significant difference was found between burned and control plots in the species richness or abundance of birds, nor was any significant pattern found in the NMDS ordination of the composition of the communities or guilds. The Principal Components Analysis (PCA) found that the burned plots were physiognomically distinct, due principally to the number of bamboo stems and dead trees. Multiple regressions based on the PCA scores and bird species richness and abundance found no significant trends. The findings of the present study indicate that the understory bird assemblage of the areas affected by a single wildfire in 2005 had almost totally recuperated eight years after this event. © 2015 Tatiana Lemos da Silva et al.

Large Wood Volume and Longitudinal Distribution in Channel Segments Draining Catchments with Different Land Use, Chile

The storage, longitudinal distribution and recruitment processes of in-stream large wood (LW) were studied comparing channel segments draining four Chilean mountain catchments with different land use. The segments were divided into relatively uniform reaches of different lengths and surveyed for LW (piece dimensions, position in the channel, orientation to flow and aggregation) and stream morphology (slope and bank full channel width and depth) characterizations. LW volume stored in the Pichun, El Toro and Vuelta de Zorra study channels are within the range informed in international researches from streams draining catchments with similar forest covers. However, the 1057 m3/ha of LW stored in Tres Arroyos is extremely high and in the same order of magnitude than the reports from old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest of USA. The size of the area that can potentially provide wood to streams depends on the wood supply mechanisms within any catchment, and the LW stored in the study segments increases as the size of this area increases. This study aims to contribute to the knowledge on the effects of LW in mountain channels, gathering new information and expanding investigations developed in Chile since 2008. The N-oxidation of alkylpyridines by hydrogen peroxide is a reaction widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. This reaction is accompanied by the undesired gas-generating decomposition reaction of hydrogen peroxide. The oxygen generation, combined with the flammability of the alkylpyridines, represents a serious hazard of fire and explosion. In this work, a new operation strategy and reactor type for the N-oxidation of alkylpyridines are proposed based on calorimetrically obtained data. Previous studies on this system [8] showed that Langmuir-Hinshelwood type kinetics fits well with the Noxidation of this family of reactions and that increased temperature and catalyst concentration favor the N-oxidation reaction. New calorimetric measurements have been performed over an extended range of temperatures and catalyst concentrations in a closed reactor. These measurements confirm that the N-oxidation of alkylpyridines can actually be performed in a much more efficient and inherently safer manner if a closed reactor is used. The advantages and characteristics of such a reactor are explained and a preliminary design is proposed.
