BackgroundHuman exposure to cadmium has various effects on health, especially the reproductive organs in males. Although it is widely known that prenatal maternal cadmium exposure can affect birth outcomes, the effect of paternal exposure to cadmium remains *** purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of paternal cadmium exposure on fetal growth by considering not only maternal cadmium exposure but also exposure to other heavy *** Mothers and Children’s environmental Health (MOCEH) study is a prospective birth cohort study in Korea. Overall, 1313 families (Father-Mother-Child) who did not have child abnormalities and who completed paternal whole blood cadmium assessments were included. Families were divided into two subgroups based on the blood sampling period (early and late pregnancy). Subjects were selected one family triple with high level of paternal cadmium and 2 triples with low levels of paternal cadmium, using the method of propensity score matching. And linear regression analyses were *** group with high paternal cadmium exposure (80% or more: 1.93 ug/L) had less birth weight than the group with low cadmium concentrations(β(se)=-0.21(0.10), p-value=0.0283). After stratified by infantile sex, prenatal paternal cadmium exposure significantly reduced the birth weight of girls only in both subgroup of different sampling time (Early pregnancy: β(se) = −0.52 (0.22), p-value = 0.0170, Late pregnancy: β(se) = −0.43 (0.18), p-value = 0.0160). Finally, after performing propensity score matching in the early pregnancy measurement group, it was found that the prenatal exposure of cadmium in fathers significantly reduced birth weight in girls(β(se)=-0.72(0.25), p-value=0.0047).DiscussionThis study assessed the effect of paternal cadmium exposure on birth outcomes in family units consisting of a father, mother, and child. Orthotropic Levy-type solution plates considering shear deformation were solved by using the Spectral Element Method (SEM). In SEM, the exact solution of structural dynamic related problems can be solved by using the frequency-dependent shape functions. The solutions of SEM are accurate in decreasing the amount of Degree Of Freedoms (DOF) to discard the cost and computational disadvantages in the Finite Element Method (FEM). This study investigates the free vibration problems of orthotropic Levy-type solution plates solutions based on the two variable Refined Plate Theory (RPT). SEM for orthotropic Levy-type solution plates in the frequency domain was formulated to solve free vibration problems. The differential governing equations of the orthotropic plate element in SEM are formulated into the form of transcendental stiffness matrices. The boundary conditions of the spectral element model consist of four edge-type DOFs at each side of the orthotropic Levy-type solution plates. The natural frequencies of the plate are calculated by means of the Wittrick-Williams procedure. The numerical investigations are presented to show the accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness of SEM without any discretization scheme. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Catalytic conversion of sugars and biomass to furanic biofuel precursors by boron-doped biochar in ionic liquid

In this study, the production of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from sugars e.g. xylose and glucose, and agricultural wastes e.g. corncob, rice straw and wheat straw were examined in the presence of boron-doped biochar catalysts, boric acid and an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([emim]Cl). Boron-doped trapa shell biochar (BTB) and coconut shell biochar (BCB) catalysts were synthesized via the wet impregnation method. Fourier transform infrared spectra of biochar catalysts showed a band for B[sbnd]O stretching vibrations confirming successful boron impregnation. Furfural and HMF yields from glucose reached 32% and 40%, respectively. One-pot hydrolysis-dehydration conversion of corncob, rice straw and wheat straw resulted in yields of up to 12% and 21% for furfural and HMF, respectively. In addition, catalyst reusability up to 4 cycles was demonstrated with less than 5% variation in HMF yield. Overall, the results of the study offer new insights and great potential in the conversion of waste biomass to high value platform chemicals for energy applications. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Coastal ecosystems are important destinations for natural and anthropogenic inputs, areas experiencing eutrophication from untreated sewage globally. However, the mechanistic link of how coastal waters and sediments can jointly respond to nutrient enrichment, especially nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), remains relatively unknown. Here, we assessed the interdecadal variability in N and P contents, comparing four surface water sampling sites (∼40-year monthly concentrations) and three ²¹⁰Pb dated sediment cores (∼70-years) in an urban bay that has received increasingly high untreated sewage discharges over the past century (Guanabara Bay, Brazil). Major eutrophication was found, with differences between waters and sediments along sampling sites. The water concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) yielded on average ∼10–45 % and ∼40–190 % higher in 2005–2017 compared to 1980–2005 period in the sampling site most influenced by the denser urban than the conserved area, respectively. Furthermore, 6-year average water concentrations indicated both recent initial decreases in the most urban area, potentially associated with new sanitation facilities, and high increases in those relatively more conserved areas. Conversely, TP and TN sediment burial rates were less sensitive to recent changes as compared to the water concentrations, yielding ∼11 and 31 % between 1980–2005 and 2005–2017, respectively, of which also provided baselines data for earlier periods without direct pelagic measurements (i.e., 1950–1980). Thus, these findings offer new insights into substantial temporal and intra-ecosystem spatial variability of coastal eutrophication, indicating that an integrated analysis between water monitoring and sediment burial is needed to improve the diagnosis and prediction capabilities necessary for effective long-term mitigation of coastal aquatic eutrophication worldwide. © 2023

The utilization of graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) to enhance the oxidative polymerization of hydroquinone (HQ) within birnessite (δ-MnO2) systems was investigated. C3N4, a Lewis base enriched with nitrogen, acted as a bridge through π−π interactions between metal oxides and polyphenols. These interactions increased the affinity of the reactants, resulting in an enhanced reaction rate of six-fold, accelerated browning, and improved complex stability of C3N4...HQ...MnO2 complex. As a result, a humic-like substance (HS) was rapidly formed with improved surface morphology and larger particle sizes. Electron transfer of HQ...MnO2 promoted by C3N4 played a crucial role in HQ oxidation, expanding atomic distance and composite morphology. Theoretical calculations supported the experimental results, indicating strong affinity and higher binding energies in the C3N4...HQ...MnO2 complex. The complex had a more stable structure with a narrower HOMO-LUMO gap, facilitating HS formation. 13C and 1H NMR spectra confirmed the experimental-theoretical agreement. © 2023, The Authors. In Brazil, the use of Eucalyptus is focused on the production of wood or pulp for the paper industry but without any general recovery of waste, with leaves and branches being left on the ground. One possibility is to use these residues as raw materials in the production of industrially relevant and value-added compounds such as essential oil. The aim of the present study was to investigate the chemical composition, yield, anti-inflammatory/antinociceptive activities, and acute toxicity in mice, as well as the antimicrobial effects of essential oils from the leaves of 7 varieties of Eucalyptus and hybrids against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans . The extraction of oils was carried out using hydrodistillation, and they were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Urocam and Grancam were the plants that obtained the highest oil yield, with yields of 3.32 and 2.30%, respectively. The main chemical components identified in these plants were 1.8 cineole and α -pinene. The antinociceptive effect of the 7 oils (50 mg/kg, p.o.) was initially assessed in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. In this assay, a significant ( p < 0.05) antinociceptive/anti-inflammatory effect was observed from 4 tested essential oils ( E. benthamii, E. saligna, and the hybrids Urocam and Grancam) when compared to the vehicle-treated group. This effect was then confirmed in the formalin-induced paw licking test. No toxicological effects or alterations were observed in motor coordination after the administration of the studied oils to the animals. In the antimicrobial evaluation, the seven essential oils inhibited the growth of S. aureus, E. coli , and C. albicans at different concentrations. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the essential oil from the leaves and branches of Eucalyptus species and varieties present potential biomedical applications and represent a source of antimicrobial and/or anti-inflammatory compounds.

Standard notions of an “Earthlike” planet rely solely on physical and material properties, like planetary mass, radius, and surface temperature. Here, we introduce a novel, relational perspective on what defines “Earthlikeness.” In our process-based framework, rocky planets are local pockets of free energy that have the potential to drive the emergence of dynamically persistent systems that coevolve with one another. Examples of dynamically persistent planetary phenomena include magnetic dynamos, mantle convection, tectonic regimes, deep volatile cycles, global climate feedbacks, biogeochemical cycles, and the biosphere. When two or more processes couple to one another such that they gain causal efficacy over one another's persistence, some degree of planetary-scale homeostasis may emerge. In astrobiology, Earthlike exoplanets are often considered to be priority targets for the search for life elsewhere. We suggest that a process-based framework for Earthlikeness has the potential to widen our search space and inspire novel planetary-scale biosignatures, or “Gaiasignatures,” that may be essential for detecting exoplanetary biospheres. Additionally, a process-based view of life can influence the development of agnostic biosignatures at all scales. In contrast to the dominant scientific perspective, which has tended to engender a materialistic worldview, relational ontologies may contribute to our scientific understanding of Earth as a network of dynamically persistent systems, humanity as an integral part of nature, and the search for life in the universe. The Prospect of Geotourism in the Cycloop Mountains Conservation Area Papua

The Cycloop mountains in Papua are a nature reserve conservation area that has diverse geology, biology and culture. This paper discusses the prospects of geotourism in Cycloop mountains based on a method of analyzing the community acceptability and tourists preferences, likewise the geosite attraction and geotourism sustainability. The results of analysis indicates that a) village communities in surrounding conservation area accept and wish to get involved in natural activities; b) local tourists are very dominant and motivated on outdoor recreation in groups; c) identified geosites has classified as from Quite Interesting to Interesting based on the index of attractiveness; and d) geotourism activity in the mountains Cycloop is categorized Quite Sustainable reviewed from the environment, society, economy and governance dimension. The exploration and the geological conservation to be the reliable activities in organizing the geotourism. Geotourism is likely to be applied to the conservation area as a form of implementation of the sustainable tourism concept.
