An effort to obtain alternative energy is still interesting subject to be studied, especially production of biogas from agriculture waste. This paper was an overview of the latest development of biogas researches from rice husk waste by Solid State Anaerobic Digestion (SSAD). The main obstacle of biogas production from rice husk waste was the lignin content which is very difficult degraded by microbes. Various pretreatments have been conducted, either physically, chemically as well as biologically. The SSAD method was an attractive option because of the low water content of rice husk waste. The biogas yield by SSAD method gave more attractive result compared to Liquid Anaerobic Digestion (LAD) method. Various studies were still conducted in batch mode laboratory scale and also has not found optimum operating conditions. Research on a larger scale such as bench and pilot scale with continuous systems will be an increase trend in the future research. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Air pollution has become a major global threat to human health. Urbanization and industrialization over the past few decades have increased the air pollution. Plausible connections have been made between air pollutants and dementia. This study used machine learning algorithms (k-nearest neighbors, random forest, gradient-boosted decision trees, eXtreme gradient boosting, and CatBoost) to investigate the association between cognitive impairment and air pollution. Data from the Taiwan Biobank and 75 air-pollution-monitoring stations in Taiwan were analyzed to determine individual levels of exposure to air pollutants. The pollutants examined were particulate matter with a diameter of ≤ 2.5 μm (PM), nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and ozone. The results revealed that the most strongly correlated with cognitive impairment were ozone, PM, and carbon monoxide levels with adjustment of educational level, age, and household income. The model based on these factors achieved accuracy as high as 0.97 for detecting cognitive impairment, indicating a positive association between air pollutions and cognitive impairment.

Fire is a major type of disturbance that has important influences on ecosystem dynamics and carbon *** our understanding of ecosystem fires and their carbon cycle consequences is still limited,largely due to the difficulty of large-scale fire monitoring and the complex interactions between fire,vegetation,climate,and anthropogenic ***,using data from satellite-derived fire observations and ecosystem model simulations,we performed a comprehensive investigation of the spatial and temporal dynamics of China’s ecosystem fire disturbances and their carbon emissions over the past two decades(1997–2016).Satellite-derived results showed that on average about 3.47-4.53×10^(4) km^(2) of the land was burned annually during the past two decades,among which annual burned forest area was about 0.81-1.25×10^(4) km^(2),accounting for 0.33-0.51%of the forest area in *** burning emitted about 23.02 TgC per *** to satellite products,simulations from the Energy Exascale Earth System Land Model(ELM)strongly overestimated China’s burned area and fire-induced carbon *** burned area and fire-induced carbon emissions were high for boreal forest in Northeast China’s Daxing’anling region and subtropical dry forest in South Yunnan,as revealed by both the satellite product and the model *** results suggest that climate and anthropogenic factors play critical roles in controlling the spatial and seasonal distribution of China’s ecosystem fire *** findings highlight the importance of multiple complementary approaches in assessing ecosystem fire disturbance and its carbon *** studies are required to improve the methods of observing and modelling China’s ecosystem fire disturbances,which will provide valuable information for fire management and ecosystem sustainability in an era when both human activities and the natural environment are rapidly changing.

This study explores the use of non-homogeneous hidden Markov models (NHMMs) to forecast streamflows into the Orós Reservoir, located in the State of Ceará, Northeastern Brazil. These models employ hydro-climatic information from a given year to predict the next year inflow. The Orós Reservoir is a key infrastructure in the water resources system of the state, where most rivers present very high temporal variability, which is a challenge for water managers. Streamflow forecast systems at the climate scale (months ahead) can be very useful for the challenging process of water allocation in the region. This paper explores the use of NHMMs to provide a probabilistic one-year ahead forecast of the mean annual flow for the Orós Reservoir. Results based on a forecast verification study based on 60 years of independent data show that NHMMs with two or three hidden states, employing the NINO3 climate index as exogenous variable, provides forecasts with an average value of the continuous ranked probability skill score of about 0.2-0.25, meaning that they are better than climatology. It is also evident that those models performed much better during dry years than during wet years, which may be related to lack of other climate indices. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Previous studies have demonstrated the preventive effects of greenness and greenspace using three classes of exposure metrics (greenspace coverage, greenness, and landscape indices for greenspace) on suicide. Nevertheless, most studies were individually employed for each metric using a single-phase method, representing the short-term exposure. We hierarchically investigated the association between three classes of exposure metrics and suicide using long-term data from 2000 to 2018 in Taiwan. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used to represent the greenness exposure, while mean patch area (area and edge), area-weighted mean fractal dimension index (shape), and proximity index (proximity) were opted to represent landscape indices for greenspace. Using the generalized additive mixed model, we revealed that the relative risk (95% confidence interval) of greenspace coverage, NDVI, mean patch area, area-weighted mean fractal dimension index, and proximity index was 0.998 (0.997, 0.999), 0.860 (0.811, 0.912), 0.999 (0.999, 0.999), 1.485 (1.056, 2.088), and 0.999 (0.999, 0.999), respectively. This indicates that long-term exposure to both greenspace coverage and greenness is associated with a reduced suicide ratio. Similarly, long-term exposure to greenspace that is greater in size, simpler in shape, and closer in proximity is associated with a decreased suicide risk. For formulating future afforestation policies, the layout and connectivity of greenspaces should be considered besides increasing green areas. This study not only demonstrated the significance of long-term exposure to greenspace for reducing the suicide ratio, but also illustrated a hierarchical approach to examine the effects of greenspace. © 2023

Olive polyphenols, including oleacein, oleocanthal, and oleuropein, have demonstrated potential benefits in mitigating the risk of metabolic diseases such as obesity and inflammation by improving glycemic control, reducing blood pressure, and lowering inflammation. This study provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of these compounds using human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). Whole-transcriptome analysis was employed to investigate the compounds' effects on adipocytes, focusing on immune system and metabolic pathways. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network identified key targets and pathways. Oleacein uniquely enriched the PI3K-AKT pathway and demonstrated distinct regulation of inflammation and metabolism. The PPI network pinpointed growth hormone receptor (GHR) and interleukin-6 receptor (IL6R) as significant targets. Quantitative RT-qPCR analysis showed that oleacein significantly increased IL6R expression, while oleocanthal and oleuropein had no effect. GHR expression was also elevated by oleacein, although without statistical significance. Physicochemical properties of the compounds were analyzed for drug development potential. Molecular docking simulations indicated superior binding affinities for oleacein with GHR and IL6R, supported by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays, which confirmed stable interactions with both receptors. This study is the first to integrate transcriptomic, molecular, and structural analyses of these bioactive olive-derived compounds. Oleacein emerged as a promising candidate for therapeutic development, with unique molecular interactions and regulatory effects on adipocyte immune and metabolic processes. These findings provide a foundation for future investigations into oleacein's role in treating metabolic and inflammatory disorders.

Can a robot be a personal dating coach? Even with the increasing amount of conversational data on the internet, the implementation of conversational robots remains a challenge. In particular, a detailed and professional counseling log is expensive and not publicly accessible. In this paper, we develop a robot dating coaching system leveraging corpus from online communities. We examine people’s perceptions of the dating coaching robot with a dialogue module. 97 participants joined to have a conversation with the robot, and 30 of them evaluated the robot. The results indicate that participants thought the robot could become a dating coach while considering the robot is entertaining rather than helpful. © 2020, CC-BY.

We discover two infrared objects that show deep absorption features of H2O, CO2, and CO ices in the AKARI/Infrared Camera (IRC) slit-less spectroscopic survey of the Galactic plane in 2.5-13 µm. Both objects are located neither in known star-forming regions nor in known dense clouds. For one of the objects, Object 1, we successfully extract a spectrum from 2.5 to 13 µm, which also shows several absorption features in 5-13 µm, including deep silicate absorption at 10 µm. For the other object, Object 2, only a spectrum from 3.1 to 5 µm is reliably extracted due to the presence of nearby overlapping objects and faint nebulosity. Both objects show warm (> 100 K) CO gas absorption in addition to the ice absorption features, suggesting that they are embedded young stellar objects (YSOs). On the other hand, both objects have spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that peak at around 5 µm and decrease towards longer wavelengths. These characteristics of the SEDs and the presence of deep absorption features cannot easily be accounted for by standard YSO models. They may be explained as background stars behind dense clouds. Microbial growth may occur in carpet dust when exposed to elevated moisture levels, but it is unknown how diurnal variations in equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) affect this growth. Our goal is to apply the "time-of-wetness" (TOW) concept from fungal growth on drywall to model fungal growth in carpet. Used carpet samples were embedded with dust, placed in an experimental chamber and then the ERH within the chambers was varied from 50% to either 85% or 100% for a period of 0, 6, 12, 18, or 24 hours per day over a two-week period. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) measurements of fungi revealed that for the 85% and 100% samples, growth could be modeled with the standard TOW and activation limited growth curve. These measurements demonstrated that the relative growth rate fit the TOW model with the Pearson Correlation Coefficients of 0.958 for 100% TOW and 0.898 for 85% TOW. DNA sequencing revealed increased abundance of species in the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium, among others, at increased moisture. Ultimately, this data can be used to accurately model fungal growth in housing based on moisture and can be utilized in future public health, policy, and epidemiological models. © 2018 15th Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2018.
