Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. Human body communication is expected to be a viable new transmission method for networks between wearable devices working together in a body area network (BAN). Wearable devices demand long battery life, small size, and light weight. Therefore, it is important to investigate the input impedance characteristics of the electrodes and design the electrode structure in such a way as to improve the communication qualities. The characteristics of the human body are important for designing the antennas (electrodes) used for close range communication in a human body communication system. Normally, homogenous muscle phantoms are used for measuring the input impedance characteristics of these antennas. However, nobody has measured the input impedance characteristics of electrodes for human body communication at a frequency of 10 MHz using phantoms that take into account the actual tissue structure of the human body. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the impedance characteristics using phantoms which consider skin, fat, and muscle. In this study, changes in the input impedance characteristics were analyzed considering the electrical properties of a phantom containing muscle and fat. Moreover we tried to develop a human muscle and fat phantom for human body communication system available at a frequency of 10 MHz.

In the last few years, notable progress in understanding the growth mechanism of thin solar films deposited by numerous techniques have been made. Electrodeposition continues to be a complex deposition technique that can lead to low-quality material regions (crack) in the semiconductor material. Such cracks form porous zones on the substrate and diminish the heterojunction interface quality of a photovoltaic (PV) cell. In this paper, electrodeposition of In2S3 films was systematically and quantitatively investigated by varying the electrodeposition parameters including bath composition, current density, deposition time, and deposition temperature. Their effects upon the film growth mechanism, composition, and morphology were studied with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and fracture and buckling software (digital image analysis). In addition, the effect of different glass-substrates (Mo, ITO, and FTO) and annealing treatments upon the performance of the electrodeposited In2S3 film was analyzed. Furthermore, the Taguchi Method was used to determine the optimal electrodeposition parameters and study their influence upon the morphological and compositional properties of In2S3 films. © 2014 IEEE.

This research studied the quantity of free formaldehyde released from 2- [(hydroxymethyl)amino]ethanol (HAE) in DI water and natural rubber latex mixture using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. The quantity of formaldehyde retained in the solution was cross-checked by using titration technique. The investigated factors were the concentration of preservative (HAE), pH, and temperature. Taguchi's method was used to design the experiments. The number of experiments was reduced to 16 experiments from all possible experiments by orthogonal arrays (3 factors and 4 levels in each factor). Minitab program was used as a tool for statistical calculation and for finding the suitable condition for the preservative system. HPLC studies showed that higher temperature and higher concentration of the preservative influence the amount of formaldehyde released. It was found that conditions at which formaldehyde was released in the lowest amount were 1.6%w/v HAE, 4 to 40 °C, and the original pH. Nevertheless, the pH value of NR latex should be more than 10 (the suitable pH value was found to be 13). This preservative can be used to replace current preservative systems and can maintain the quality of latex for long-term storage. Use of the proposed preservative system was also shown to have reduced impact on the toxicity of the environment.

Solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) and composting of yard trimmings with effluent from liquid anaerobic digestion were compared at a range of total solids (TS) contents and feedstock to effluent (F/E) ratios under thermophilic condition. For SS-AD, TS contents of 22%, 25%, and 30% were studied, while for composting TS contents of 35%, 45%, and 55% were sued. Experiments were conducted at various feedstock to effluent (F/E) ratios including 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. High TS content negatively affected degradation rates as indicated by low biogas and carbon dioxide yields for SS-AD and composting, respectively. In composting, the greatest carbon loss was obtained at 35% TS, which was 2-3 times of that at 55% TS and was up to 50% higher than that in SS-AD. In SS-AD, over half of the degraded carbon was converted to methane with the greatest methane yield of 121 L/kg VSfeedstock obtained at 22% TS. Methane production from SS-AD was low at low F/E ratios (i.e. 2 and 3), likely due to inhibitory effects of high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (up to 5.6 g/kg N). Nitrogen-rich (N, P, K) end products with similar N-P-K values but different dominant forms of nitrogen were generated from SS-AD and composting.

In human body communication, it is important to investigate the input impedance characteristics of electrodes and transmission characteristics between transceivers for improving the qualities of communication and reducing power consumption. In this work, we studied the input impedance characteristics and transmission characteristics between a wristwatch device and a handheld device using both a three-dimensional electromagnetic field simulation and experiment at 10 MHz. The input impedance and transmission characteristics obtained from the simulation using a muscle homogenous model and those obtained from the measurement using a muscle-tissue-equivalent phantom showed good consistency. The calculated electric field around a human arm decreased as it moved away from the surface of the arm. This distribution of the electric field showed the advantages of human body communication, which are confidential communication and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Moreover, power consumption at the feeding point of the system was calculated from the transmission characteristics obtained from the simulation. This result indicated that human body communication achieves low-power consumption.

Periods in the soybean summer cycle that are sensitive to the occurrence of high temperatures were studied. An analysis was performed on the variability of soybean yields associated with crop canopy temperatures during key development periods. A land surface temperature (LST) data series from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on the Aqua satellite was processed between 2003 and 2012 that covered the entire state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. Enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data from MODIS on the Terra satellite were used to monitor the LST during different phenological stages. Spatially interpolated maps of soybean yield distributions were generated using data obtained from Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) at state and municipality levels. The results indicate that canopy-LST occurrence in mid-February, during the grain filling, is most correlated to yield reduction (R2 = 0.82 and RMSD = 14.4%). At the state level, the average yield is 2003 kg·ha-1 with a standard deviation of 308 kg·ha-1. The overall average of the canopy-LST is 305.0 K (31.8°C) with a standard deviation of 1.9 K. The slope of the downward linear relationship between canopy-LST and yield was -28.7%. These results indicate that monitoring heat wave events can provide important information for characterising agriculture vulnerability.
