A constructed wetland was designed to remove BOD together with total nitrogen（T-N）from municipal *** designed wetland was composed of the aerobic tank and anaerobic/anoxic one which was connected in series immediately after the aerobic one,and could treat 100 m raw municipal wastewater every *** biological oxidation and nitrification could be obtained at the aerobic *** than 80 % of BOD5 and 30.5 % of T-N was removed at the aerobic tank,and more than 96 % of the organic nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen were nitrified successfully into nitrate nitrogen,which is indicative of the successful biological *** removal of BOD and T-N could be obtained at the anaerobic/anoxic tank of the constructed *** 57 % of the remaining BOD was removed at the anaerobic/anoxic *** than 74 % of the remaining T-N was denitrified,and the average concentration of T-N at the final effluent was 6.9 mg/*** maximum available capacity for nutrient uptake in plants was far less（of the order of 5 %）than the loading rate of nutrients to the constructed wetland.

To take an advantageous stance in the recent competition of semiconductor industries, companies have made efforts to invest terms of technological advancements. From 1993 to 2006, enormous fire accidents occurred in three national science parks in Taiwan. This research focused on whether the very early smoke detection apparatus (VESDA), could adequately assist the emergency response center (ERC) members to take actions when alarm occurs. Besides, the research also analyzed every VESDA alarm that happened from 2004 to 2006 for the purpose of increasing ERC personnel's experience and coordinating ERC with departments of safety management, environmental protection, facility engineering, and equipment sections together to investigate better solutions to related problems.

PuO2 and AmO2 solid solutions: (Pu, Am)O2 are one of the candidates of fuels in a sub-critical accelerator-driven system (ADS). To understand the fuel performance, the thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity and heat capacity are quite important. However, it is very hard to experimentally determine the physical properties of plutonium as well as americium compounds due to their handling-difficulties. Molecular dynamics (MD) would be a specific method to describe the physical properties of such materials. In the present study, we have investigated thermophysical properties of PuO2, AmO2, and their solid solutions in the temperature range from 300 to 2,500 K. The lattice parameter, compressibility, heat capacity, linear thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity were evaluated. A Morse-type potential function added to the Busing-Ida type potential was employed as the potential for interatomic interactions. The calculated lattice parameters of (Pu, Am)O2 obeyed Vegard's law, and the values increased with temperature. The heat capacities of (Pu, Am)O 2 were similar in any compositions. The thermal conductivities of (Pu, Am)O2 were lower than those of PuO2 and AmO 2, indicating that a point-defect scattering effect of phonons could be realized in the MD calculations. © 2008 Materials Research Society.

Current searching works are common and essential in Web users. On the other hand, in the real world, the searching is the time-consuming works because of several searching to extract more exact and satisfied information. In this paper, we propose an Inference process to effectively extract control points based on the ontology. The ontology-based searching supports hierarchical and associated results as well as knowledge sharing with hierarchy concepts. Moreover, inferred searching can lessen consumed times of searching and prevent empty results with ontology and user-defined reasoning rules.

One of the major concerns in environmental studies is understanding the factors and processes that control and affect water quality. This study aimed to examine the causal relationship between land use/land cover and water quality in Tonle Sap Lake, one of the largest fresh water lakes in Southeast Asia and also to monitor the spatial distribution of water quality in the scale of the lake basin. The approach combines spatial data analysis using Geographic Information System (GIS) and statistics to establish the strength of relationship between land use/land cover derived from classifying Landsat data and water-quality within Tonle Sap subcatchments. These analyses produced indicators (Kendall's tau) showing the strength of correlation between percentages of land use/land cover type as predictor variable and median of water quality parameters as response variable. The retrieval of optically active constituents from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrophotometer (MODIS) was done using bio-optical algorithm applied in turbid inland waters based on the parameterization of the inherent optical properties - absorption and backscattering to come up with the modeled reflectance spectra, which was later, used in an inversion model to obtain the estimated concentration map of Total Suspended Sediments (TSS) and Chlorophyll-a from remote sensing reflectance of the multispectral images. Rank correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis results reveal the statistical relationships between agriculture lands, grasslands, forest covers and population density with TN, PO4P, NO3 and TSS. The results from remote sensing analysis exhibit quite appreciable variation in spatial distribution of water quality which helps identify the spatial aspects of the lake ecosystem more clearly and cost-effectively than point measurements.

Field experiences have been included as class activities in many engineering curricula. Students gain an understanding and appreciation from "real world" applications of topics and theories learned in the classroom. In the past, most of these field experiences have been limited to specific courses and conducted for just a few hours within easy travel distance from a university. The Department of Civil engineering at North Dakota State University developed a field experience course that takes students to China to gain first hand knowledge on civil engineering design and construction practice, to learn the history of civil engineering and cultural influences on engineering practice, and to have an education/cultural exchange with Chinese students. In collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Civil engineering and Architecture (BICEA), twelve senior level students and two faculty members visited China in spring 2005. The class visited Beijing, the Three Gorges area of Yangtze River, and Shanghai to observe and inspect specific sites and projects, including the Three Gorges Dam and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games main stadium construction sites, as they relate to the civil engineering and construction education. In Beijing, the class stayed on the campus of BICEA. In addition to campus visit, a mini-conference was organized for American and Chinese students to present their curricula and extra-curricula activities, their campus life, and to have small group discussion. In addition, students were exposed to the cultural and historical implications of engineering education, project planning and design, as well as construction decisions and methods. A course evaluation of the course showed that students have gained better understanding of global perspectives of civil engineering and culture influence on engineering designs, learned what they could never learn in regular classes through site visits and meeting with Chinese students, and enjoyed opportunity for providing input

Each year in the past seven years, a summer camp at North Dakota State University has attracted tribal college students and tribal high school graduates from the Indian Reservations in North Dakota to learn science, technology, and engineering. One of the activities of the camp is to engage the participants in exploring specific science/engineering subjects through hands-on activities. Students are provided with opportunities to select topics they are interested in. They are divided into small groups, usually 2 to 3 students in a group, and spend one week with university professors working on different projects. Professors from 5 engineering departments and 2 science departments have participated in this activity. Through the years, various topics have been selected to connect students to key subjects of different disciplines, to expose them to contemporary engineering issues and challenges, and to attract them to engineering programs. Professors are encouraged to develop project activities that cover fundamental science/engineering concepts, stimulate critical thinking of the students, and introduce students to procedures of scientific thinking and research. Based on experiences and lessons learned from working with Native American students, professors have been constantly looking for methods to connect with these students by improving hands-on activities to engage them in exploratory learning. In this paper, a set of instructional projects are used as examples to illustrate different approaches and activities that have been used to involve students in active learning through experimental studies. Methods and materials developed in this program have received positive responses from participating students and professors and are applicable to other student groups who are interested in learning science and engineering. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

With support from HBCU-UP (Historically Black College and University Undergraduate program) at National Science Foundation (NSF), the ACTION (Advanced Curriculum and Technology-Based Instructional Opportunities Network) program at University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is promoting inquiry based active learning and research projects among undergraduate STEM (Science, Technology, engineering and Mathematics) majors. Field based experiential learning efforts titled (i) AIRSPACES: Aerial Imaging and Remote Sensing for Precision Agriculture and environmental Stewardship and (ii) ECPA: environmentally Conscious Precision Agriculture, provided a perfect setting for STEM undergraduates to interact with UMES farm personnel, graduate students, NASA and USDA researchers collaborating with the faculty members in the project. In the summer of 2006 ACTION program supported three undergraduate students to work with the principal author to work on a chosen aspect of the ongoing effort. For this ACTION project students decided to focus on aspects of yield monitoring and remote sensing for the precision agriculture project at UMES. This paper will highlight the student efforts related to the ACTION project for 2006 summer and discuss how the out of classroom, field, and laboratory based activities enhanced learning. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

The Hydrological Simulation program-FORTRAN (HSPF) is a comprehensive model that was developed to simulate many processes related to water flow and quality in watersheds of almost any size and complexity. Paddy rice fields often dominate extensive portions of the landscape in the Asian monsoon region. The hydrological and environmental conditions of paddy fields differ somewhat from those of other land uses, and HSPF may not adequately simulate watersheds in paddy farming regions. HSPF was previously modified to HSPF-Paddy;here, we examined the applicability of the modified model. The model was applied to simulate the water flow and quality of the Saemangeum watershed (2523 km2) in Korea, where paddy rice fields comprise about one-third of the total watershed area. Long-term monitoring data (5 years for water flow, 10 years for water quality) were used in the calibration and verification processes. Model performance was in the range of "very good" and "good" based on model efficiency (R2) and percent difference. The accuracy of the daily simulation was lower than that of monthly simulation for water flow. The water-quality simulation results were encouraging for this sizable watershed with mixed land uses;HSPF-Paddy proved adequate, and its application is recommended to simulate watershed processes in paddy farming regions. © IWA Publishing 2007.
