Numerical Hydrogeological Modeling of the Eastern Limb of the Moeda Syncline: Analysis of the Current Situation and Future Perspectives for the Cauê Aquifer (Iron Quadrangle - Mg, Brazil)

The Moeda Syncline, located in the central portion of Minas Gerais, contains part of the Cauê Aquifer, a hydrogeological unit of great importance for the water supply of the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region. The dewatering of iron mines in the region, necessary for the continued operation of 11 iron mines on the eastern limb of the syncline, demanded in 2019 the pumping of about 52 million m3/year of groundwater. This work aims at quantifying the evolution of the hydraulic head and baseflow of the eastern limb watercourses in the period between 1999 and 2019 and forecasting the water table lowering in the subsequent 20 years. This was achieved by means of hydrogeological flow modeling using Feflow software, whose steps consisted of assembly, calibration in permanent flow state, in transient state, and simulation of water level lowering. The assembly generated a model divided in 4 hydrogeological units (Gandarela Aquifer, Cauê Aquifer, Batatal Aquitard and Moeda Aquifer), 4 sectors, and separated vertically in upper and lower portions. The calibration in steady state resulted in 7.75% NRMS. After calibration in transient state it was found a 13.6% reduction in baseflow of the area as a whole between 1999 and 2019, in addition to an average lowering of 10.4 meters in the Cauê Aquifer and 2.2 meters in the other units, resulting in 5.9 meters on average. The most affected region was the south-central part of the study area, which had a lowering of about 11.6 meters and a 21.6% reduction in baseflow. The simulation of the period from 2019 to 2039 resulted in the lowering of another 7.4 meters on average, with the south-central region again being the most affected, with 10.8 meters of lowering. In this period a reduction of 7.6% of the baseflow in the studied area was predicted, being 14.7% in Fechos Stream, located in the northern portion. Tree canopy height is one of the most important indicators of forest biomass, productivity, and species diversity, but it is challenging to measure accurately from the ground and from space. Here, we used a U-Net model adapted for regression to map the canopy height of all trees in the state of California with very high-resolution aerial imagery (60 cm) from the USDA-NAIP program. The U-Net model was trained using canopy height models computed from aerial LiDAR data as a reference, along with corresponding RGB-NIR NAIP images collected in 2020. We evaluated the performance of the deep-learning model using 42 independent 1 km2 sites across various forest types and landscape variations in California. Our predictions of tree heights exhibited a mean error of 2.9 m and showed relatively low systematic bias across the entire range of tree heights present in California. In 2020, trees taller than 5 m covered ∼ 19.3% of California. Our model successfully estimated canopy heights up to 50 m without saturation, outperforming existing canopy height products from global models. The approach we used allowed for the reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure of individual trees as observed from nadir-looking optical airborne imagery, suggesting a relatively robust estimation and mapping capability, even in the presence of image distortion. In 2023, La Niña conditions that generally prevailed in the eastern Pacific Ocean from mid-2020 into early 2023 gave way to a strong El Niño by October. Atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—all increased to record-high levels. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 419.3±0.1 ppm, which is 50% greater than the pre-industrial level. The growth from 2022 to 2023 was 2.8 ppm, the fourth highest in the record since the 1960s. The combined short-term effects of El Niño and the long-term effects of increasing levels of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere contributed to new records for many essential climate variables reported here. The annual global temperature across land and oceans was the highest in records dating as far back as 1850, with the last seven months (June–December) having each been record warm. Over land, the globally averaged temperature was also record high. Dozens of countries reported record or near-record warmth for the year, including China and continental Europe as a whole (warmest on record), India and Russia (second warmest), and Canada (third warmest). Intense and widespread heatwaves were reported around the world. In Vietnam, an all-time national maximum temperature record of 44.2°C was observed at Tuong Duong on 7 May, surpassing the previous record of 43.4°C at Huong Khe on 20 April 2019. In Brazil, the air temperature reached 44.8°C in Araçuaí in Minas Gerais on 20 November, potentially a new national record and 12.8°C above normal. The effect of rising temperatures was apparent in the cryosphere, where snow cover extent by June 2023 was the smallest in the 56-year record for North America and seventh smallest for the Northern Hemisphere overall. In Brazil, a significant amount of organic waste is produced in households and restaurants. This study thus aimed to determine the ideal conditions for generating methane from the treatment of household waste by anaerobic digestion, under mesophilic (37 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) conditions, to determine the maximum organic loading rate (OLR) in the reactors, and to evaluate kinetic parameters by statistical models: Modified Gompertz, First-Order, Logistic and Transference functions. The experiments were conducted in anaerobic batch reactors. Different proportions of pre-prepared waste (PPW)/leftover waste (LW) were used: 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100 and different ORL: 0.15;0.30;0.45;0.60;and 0.90 g TVS (Total Volatile Solids).L⁻¹.d⁻¹. For both conditions, the optimal proportions of PPW/LW were 100/0 and 75/25 %. Under mesophilic condition, the best results were observed (869 mL of CH₄.g TVS⁻¹). Caldera-forming eruptions of silicic volcanic systems are among the most devastating events on Earth. By contrast, post-collapse volcanic activity initiating new caldera cycles is generally considered less hazardous. Formed after Santorini’s latest caldera-forming eruption of ~1600bce, the Kameni Volcano in the southern Aegean Sea enables the eruptive evolution of a recharging multi-cyclic caldera to be reconstructed. Kameni’s eruptive record has been documented by onshore products and historical descriptions of mainly effusive eruptions dating back to 197bce. Here we combine high-resolution seismic reflection data with cored lithologies from International Ocean Discovery program Expedition 398 at four sites to determine the submarine architecture and volcanic history of intra-caldera deposits from Kameni. Our shore-crossing analysis reveals the deposits of a submarine explosive eruption that produced up to 3.1 km3of pumice and ash, which we relate to a historical eruption in 726ce. The estimated volcanic explosivity index of magnitude 5 exceeds previously considered worst-case eruptive scenarios for Santorini. Our finding that the Santorini caldera is capable of producing large explosive eruptions at an early stage in the caldera cycle implies an elevated hazard potential for the eastern Mediterranean region, and potentially for other recharging silicic calderas.

Motivation Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R package (BioTIMEr) to facilitate use of the database. Main Types of Variables Included The database is composed of one main data table containing the abundance records and 11 metadata tables. The data are organised in a hierarchy of scales where 11,989,233 records are nested in 1,603,067 sample events, from 553,253 sampling locations, which are nested in 708 studies. A study is defined as a sampling methodology applied to an assemblage for a minimum of 2 years. Spatial Location and Grain Sampling locations in BioTIME are distributed across the planet, including marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms. Spatial grain size and extent vary across studies depending on sampling methodology. We recommend gridding of sampling locations into areas of consistent size. Time Period and Grain The earliest time series in BioTIME start in 1874, and the most recent records are from 2023. Temporal grain and duration vary across studies. We recommend doing sample-level rarefaction to ensure consistent sampling effort through time before calculating any diversity metric. Major Taxa and Level of Measurement The database includes any eukaryotic taxa, with a combined total of 56,400 taxa. Software Format csv and. SQL.

Aim The urgency for remote, reliable and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which can track life underwater and on land. However, we lack a unified methodology to report this sampling effort and a comprehensive overview of PAM coverage to gauge its potential as a global research and monitoring tool. To address this gap, we created the Worldwide Soundscapes project, a collaborative network and growing database comprising metadata from 416 datasets across all realms (terrestrial, marine, freshwater and subterranean). Location Worldwide, 12,343 sites, all ecosystem types. Time Period 1991 to present. Major Taxa Studied All soniferous taxa. Methods We synthesise sampling coverage across spatial, temporal and ecological scales using metadata describing sampling locations, deployment schedules, focal taxa and audio recording parameters. We explore global trends in biological, anthropogenic and geophysical sounds based on 168 selected recordings from 12 ecosystems across all realms. Results Terrestrial sampling is spatially denser (46 sites per million square kilometre—Mkm 2 ) than aquatic sampling (0.3 and 1.8 sites/Mkm 2 in oceans and fresh water) with only two subterranean datasets. Although diel and lunar cycles are well sampled across realms, only marine datasets (55%) comprehensively sample all seasons. Across the 12 ecosystems selected for exploring global acoustic trends, biological sounds showed contrasting diel patterns across ecosystems, declined with distance from the Equator, and were negatively correlated with anthropogenic sounds. Main Conclusions PAM can inform macroecological studies as well as global conservation and phenology syntheses, but representation can be improved by expanding terrestrial taxonomic scope, sampling coverage in the high seas and subterranean ecosystems, and spatio-temporal replication in freshwater habitats. Species' traits and environmental conditions determine the abundance of tree species across the globe. The extent to which traits of dominant and rare tree species differ remains untested across a broad environmental range, limiting our understanding of how species traits and the environment shape forest functional composition. We use a global dataset of tree composition of >22,000 forest plots and 11 traits of 1663 tree species to ask how locally dominant and rare species differ in their trait values, and how these differences are driven by climatic gradients in temperature and water availability in forest biomes across the globe. We find three consistent trait differences between locally dominant and rare species across all biomes; dominant species are taller, have softer wood and higher loading on the multivariate stem strategy axis (related to narrow tracheids and thick bark). The difference between traits of dominant and rare species is more strongly driven by temperature compared to water availability, as temperature might affect a larger number of traits. Therefore, climate change driven global temperature rise may have a strong effect on trait differences between dominant and rare tree species and may lead to changes in species abundances and therefore strong community reassembly.
