Functional assessment of the upper limbs is the most effective method to verify the motor condition. However, not all dynamometers are sensitive enough to measure individual finger contribution to the force. This paper focuses on a novel virtual instrumentation developed to measure palm grip strength. The instrument was designed with 'ring' shaped parts to optimize interaction with the user's fingers, making it possible to measure the strength of each finger during palm grip. A mobile application developed on the Android system with Google's Flutter framework and Bluetooth connectivity eliminates the need for wires. The application allows the user to choose which hand to be evaluated, adjusts the exercise duration, and includes the user's name. The instrument calibration resulted in errors of 2.737%, 3.614%, 3.452%, 2.520%, 3.804%, and 1.646% for the Right Index, Right Middle, Right Ring, Right Little, Right Thumb, and Left Thumb sensors, respectively. The Experimental Protocol revealed a difference in strength between dominant and contralateral hands of 7.5% for the group considering four fingers (without thumb) and 7.1% for the group considering all five fingers. This study emphasizes the effectiveness of the dynamometer and its application as a valuable tool in the accurate assessment of hand strength, providing relevant data to understand the motor capabilities of the hands. © 2024 IEEE.

The maintenance of postural balance depends on coordinated actions between the joints on both sides of the body. Although biomechanical modeling studies assume symmetry between the sides of the body in the control of postural balance, it is known that lateral preference makes the lower limbs functionally asymmetric in people without neurological impairment. However, it remains inconclusive whether the coordination between joint and segmental angles to maintain balance differs between the lower limbs according to lateral preference. The study investigated the coordination of joint and segmental angles for preferred (right) and non-preferred (left) lower limb movement for static and dynamic tasks during a single-legged postural task. Eighteen healthy young adults in single-legged upright posture were evaluated. The angular variability was assessed by analyzing the first eight principal components. The cross-correlation analysis between the main components and the angles examined showed that when the support on the ground was on the non-preferred lower limb, there was greater participation of the upper segments compared to the support of the preferred limb. The preferred support of the lower limb on the ground generated angular variability among the participants in the hip, knee, and ankle joints, that is, the most distal part of the body. There is a wide range of strategies for distributing the variability of the principal components between the original angles on the left side. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with potential in biomedical applications such as sensing, drug delivery, and radiosensitization. However, how to tune the properties of the MOFs for such applications remains challenging. Herein, we synthesized two MOFs, Zr-PEB and Hf-PEB. Zr-PEB can be classified as porous interpenetrated zirconium frameworks (PIZOFs) and Hf-PEB is its analogue. We controlled their sizes while maintaining their crystal structure by employing a coordination modulation strategy. They were designed to serve as sensitizer for X-ray therapy and as potential drug carriers. Comprehensive characterizations of the MOFs' properties have been conducted, and the in vitro biological impacts have been studied. Since viability assay showed that Hf-PEB was more biocompatible compared to Zr-PEB, the cellular uptake of Hf-PEB by cells was evaluated using both fluorescence microscopy and soft X-ray tomography (SXT), and the three-dimensional structure of Hf-PEB in cells was observed. The results revealed the potential of Zr-PEB and Hf-PEB as nanomaterials for biomedical applications and demonstrated that SXT is an effective tool to assist the development of such materials. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Surgical center scheduling is challenging to schedule physical spaces to reduce costs and increase productivity. This study presents a framework called PM4SOS (Process Mining for Simulation, optimization, and Scheduling) that facilitates the generation of an operating room schedule in an automated way and integrates, reducing cognitive overload and waste of time. This framework allows the evaluation of restrictions to get the best performance of surgical schedules. PM4SOS combines process mining with data from event logs, generation of the automated simulation model, and case-based reasoning (CBR) to analyze management indicators, allowing significant gains in optimization of the scheduling of surgical centers. The results with PM4SOS help decision-making in hospital environments to better use physical resources and human resources, such as reducing waiting time, optimizing surgery execution time, and resource capacity management. © 2022 IEEE.

Objective:To investigate the prevalence and risk factors associated with long COVID symptoms among children and adolescents who have recovered from ***:This study applied a cross-sectional approach within community settings in a southern province of Vietnam.A structured questionnaire featuring socio-demographic information and common long COVID symptoms was *** correlation coefficients assessed associations among pairs of long COVID ***,multivariable logistic regression models were performed to investigate the risk factors of long COVID in recovered COVID-19 children and ***:Among 422 participants,39.3%reported long COVID symptoms,with a prevalence of 45.2%(SD=0.5)in children and 22.2%(SD=0.4)in *** symptoms reported were cough 34.6%(SD=0.5),fatigue 20.6%(SD=0.4),shortness of breath 10.9%(SD=0.3),and lack of appetite 6.6%(SD=0.3).Concerning risk factors of long COVID,a higher risk was observed among demographic groups,including girls(OR 1.25,95%CI 1.15-1.37;P<0.001,reference:boys),children compared to adolescents(OR 1.24,95%CI 1.12-1.37;P<0.001),overweight individuals(OR 1.14,95%CI 1.02-1.27;P=0.018,reference:healthy weight),and participants without any COVID-19 vaccination(OR 1.36,95%CI 1.20-1.54;P<0.001),or have received only one single dose(OR 1.35,95%CI 1.10-1.64;P=0.004)compared to those who have received two ***,patients with a COVID-19 treatment duration exceeding two weeks also had a higher risk of long COVID(OR 1.32,95%CI 1.09-1.60;P=0.003)than those who recovered less than seven ***:The insights from this study provide crucial guidance for predicting the factors associated with the occurrence of long COVID in pediatric patients,contributing to strategic interventions aimed at mitigating the long COVID risks among children and adolescents in Vietnam.

An additive manufacturing fabricated a split Pitot tube transducer for mechanical ventilator analyzers

Introduction: Frequent calibration of ventilators and anesthesia machines might reduce the risk of death and of sequelae in patients under mechanical ventilation. However, ventilator analyzers might be difficult to purchase due to high cost or even in trade-restrictive scenarios, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. To alleviate this problem, the aim of this article is to present the design and characterization of a Pitot tube transducer fabricated with additive manufacturing (AM), to be used in ventilator analyzers. Method: A split Pitot tube (SPT) transducer was designed using computer-aided design (CAD) and characterized using finite element method (FEM) simulations. Bernoulli’s equation was used to determine a transducer discharge coefficient. The sensor was fabricated with the acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) thermoplastic, with the fused deposition modeling after properly configuring the 3D printer. Results: According to the simulated velocity profile, the transducer does not impose excessive resistance to the flow and the pressure profile revealed that the pressure is constant and stable inside the pressure lines. The characteristic curve of differential pressure (dP) versus flow is quadratic. For the minimal and maximal simulated flows 0.01 to 300 L/min, the corresponding dP values are 6.535·10−4 Pa and 13.178·103 Pa. Conclusion: The split Pitot tube transducer developed here has appropriate characteristics for measuring air flows from mechanical ventilators, and the delivered pressures can be read by commercial electronic sensors. The AM is viable for fabricating the transducer, and the printing time is considerably low compared to that necessary to order a similar part from a sales representative. © 2021, Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Biomedica.

Computerized panoramic dental X-ray imaging technology uses information recorded from dental treatment history. Teeth are considered a biometric tool to identify people in cases where their bodies have been severely affected, such as to distinguish victims of disasters and fire accidents. In cases where evidence such as DNA, fingerprints, and iris cannot be examined, gender identification is an important factor in establishing personal identity. Tooth enamel is the strongest material in the human body. Resistant to burns from temperature up to 500 degrees Celsius. And the jawbone is the part that is the strongest and most durable. Including showing high levels of gender differences gender. Additionally, the jawbone is the strongest and most durable part of the human body, exhibiting high levels of gender differences. These characteristics of the teeth form the basis for this research. Using medical technology, panoramic dental X-rays taken from living individuals' dental records can determine gender when compared with post-mortem panoramic dental X-rays used as a database to compare traces of events involving lawsuits. Consequently, this guideline is for verifying personal identity by identifying gender from computerized panoramic dental X-rays. For this reason, this study aims to measuring inter-canine distance and finding the ratio of crown width to root length on computerized panoramic dental X-rays in males and females using the Image J program and analyzing with the GraphPad Prism 8 program. The results showed that the average ratio of crown width to root length was higher in males than in females, and inter-canine distance was greater in males than in females. These results emphasize the critical role of panoramic dental X-rays and image processing in biomedical engineering for accurate gender identification. © 2024 IEEE.

The process of using ICT to provide services to the public is known as the Indonesian e-Government system, or Sistem Pemerintahan Berbasis Elektronik (SPBE). The e-Government initiative in Jakarta Provincial health Office involves enhancing collaboration among public health entities for efficient data exchange and streamlined processes, especially between the Provincial and District health Offices, public hospitals, government clinics, and primary health care centers (Puskesmas). Achieving interoperability requires standardized protocols and a well-defined architectural model to integrate data seamlessly. This study presents a provincial-level architectural model focused on improving electronic health records interoperability, aiming to promote the adoption of the national Fast healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) health information exchange platform and enhance the integrity of health data in Jakarta. The study methodology involves conducting literature reviews, observations, and discussions with representatives from healthcare facilities to develop the e-Government architecture model and prototype of the infrastructure layer aiming to facilitate the interoperability of Electronic health Records (EHRs) across 93 healthcare facilities, all of which are part of the SPBE users. © 2024 IEEE.
