Functional assessment of the upper limbs is the most effective method to verify the motor condition. However, not all dynamometers are sensitive enough to measure individual finger contribution to the force. This paper focuses on a novel virtual instrumentation developed to measure palm grip strength. The instrument was designed with 'ring' shaped parts to optimize interaction with the user's fingers, making it possible to measure the strength of each finger during palm grip. A mobile application developed on the Android system with Google's Flutter framework and Bluetooth connectivity eliminates the need for wires. The application allows the user to choose which hand to be evaluated, adjusts the exercise duration, and includes the user's name. The instrument calibration resulted in errors of 2.737%, 3.614%, 3.452%, 2.520%, 3.804%, and 1.646% for the Right Index, Right Middle, Right Ring, Right Little, Right Thumb, and Left Thumb sensors, respectively. The Experimental Protocol revealed a difference in strength between dominant and contralateral hands of 7.5% for the group considering four fingers (without thumb) and 7.1% for the group considering all five fingers. This study emphasizes the effectiveness of the dynamometer and its application as a valuable tool in the accurate assessment of hand strength, providing relevant data to understand the motor capabilities of the hands.

Providing robust prognosis predictions for cancers with limited data samples remains a challenge for precision oncology. In this study, we propose a novel approach that combines multi-task learning (MTL) and graph neural networks (GNNs) to address this issue. By representing gene-gene interactions as a graph network, our approach leverages multi-task learning to effectively capture the relationships of genes relevant to the oncogenesis and progression of breast, lung, and colon cancer. We demonstrate that our approach improves the cancer prognosis prediction for cancers with fewer samples, such as colon adenocarcinoma, by leveraging the shared gene-gene interactions across different cancer types, obtaining increases in the area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) of 24%. Our work contributes to the field of smart healthcare by demonstrating the potential of MTL and GNNs for enhancing cancer prognosis prediction, even with limited data samples. © 2024 IEEE.

In this research, we aimed to investigate the clinical, ventilatory and physiological characteristics associated with extubation and verify the days in ventilator support in premature infants. This retrospective study analyzes 102 medical records of preterm infants who needed invasive mechanical ventilation from the Neonatal Intensive Care Units between January 2018 and December 2020. Data were divided into extubation success (i.e., 72 h without the need for re-intubation) and failure groups. Quantitative differential phase contrast (QDPC) microscope plays an important role in biomedical research since it can provide high-resolution images and quantitative phase information for thin transparent objects without staining. With weak phase assumption, the retrieval of phase information in QDPC can be treated as a linearly inverse problem which can be solved by Tikhonov regularization. However, the weak phase assumption is limited to thin objects, and tuning the regularization parameter manually is inconvenient. A self-supervised learning method based on deep image prior (DIP) is proposed to retrieve phase information from intensity measurements. The DIP model that takes intensity measurements as input is trained to output phase image. To achieve this goal, a physical layer that synthesizes the intensity measurements from the predicted phase is used. By minimizing the difference between the measured and predicted intensities, the trained DIP model is expected to reconstruct the phase image from its intensity measurements. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we conducted two phantom studies and reconstructed the micro-lens array and standard phase targets with different phase values. In the experimental results, the deviation of the reconstructed phase values obtained from the proposed method was less than 10% of the theoretical values. Our results show the feasibility of the proposed methods to predict quantitative phase with high accuracy, and no use of ground truth phase. © 2023 Optica Publishing Group.

The identification of missing persons and the resolution of cases involving unidentified human remains have become increasingly critical issues, as the occurrence of these cases continues to increase. To address this, various methods are used to identify these individuals. One effective method involves the identification of human remains through facial reconstruction. Our study advocates for the application of 3D computerized facial reconstruction as a technique for identifying individuals from their skulls. A portable 3D scanner was employed to obtain detailed data from the skulls, making it a versatile tool suitable not only for laboratory and field settings but also for real-time data collection, which offers significant advantages in time-sensitive situations. The facial reconstruction process was carried out using the Facial Soft Tissue Thickness (FSTTs) database, which provides essential information on tissue thickness at various points on the skull, derived from the average facial soft tissue thickness of Northern Thai male donors who contributed their bodies for educational and research purposes. The reconstruction involved the use of 27 skeletal landmarks to guide the process. Autodesk Meshmixer software was used to mark and connect the mesh points of the face, while ZBrush was employed to refine and complete the facial model, resulting in a detailed reconstruction. For this research, the skull samples were obtained from individuals who had donated their bodies for scientific study. Importantly, the researchers did not have access to any photographs or images of the donors during the reconstruction process, ensuring that the work was based solely on the skull's anatomical features. An evaluation of the accuracy of these facial reconstructions is currently ongoing, and the results will be shared in future studies to assess the potential of this technique in solving cases involving unidentified remains. © 2024 IEEE.

The air and the surface fungal communities were collected from a cool/heat pit and two offices during the 2019 heating and the 2021 cooling seasons. A total of 16 samples were analyzed with ITS2. The results showed that 92.2% (heating season) and 82.3% (cooling season) of each collected fungi were classified under the phylum Basidiomycota and Ascomycota. Genera Malassezia, Cladosporium and Mycosphaerella were predominantly detected in both seasons. Schizophyllum commune and Aspergillus fumigatus were predominantly detected indoors. Fungi in the pit during the cooling season can affect offices and countermeasures are needed. This does not occur in the heating season. © 2023 Architectural Institute of Japan. All rights reserved.

This study aims to develop an edible coating based on virgin coconut oil (VCO) nanoemulsion, iota-carrageenan and alginate to prolong the shelf life of pindang (mildly salted cooked) fish products. The research involved three stages: material preparation, characterization and determination of factors and responses for experimental design;parameter optimization to achieve optimal conditions;and application and analysis of pre- and post-coating characteristics of pindang fish. The parameter ranges were 0.5–1.5% for alginate concentration, 0.5–1.5% for iota-carrageenan concentration and 0.5–1.0% for VCO nanoemulsion concentration. The result of this study was an optimized food coating solution that was clear and bright white in color. Pindang fish coated with this layer showed improved quality in terms of water content (48.46%), weight loss (0.39%), pH (5.84), total volatile base (47.01%), salt content (2.9%), appearance (7), texture (7) and slime (7). At the same time, the total bacterial count remained unchanged (8 log colony-forming units (CFU)/g), the mold count remained unchanged (5 log CFU/g) and the aroma and taste received a score of 6. Thus, this study successfully produced an optimized edible coating that can enhance the quality and extend the shelf life of pindang fish, making it suitable for broader market distribution. © 2023 ICE Publishing. Brazilian Amazon red propolis as a sustainable resource for the green synthesis of antibacterial silver nanoparticles

This study investigates the use of Amazon red propolis for the green synthesis of antibacterial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). A hydroalcoholic propolis extract was fractionated to yield fractions rich in phenolic compounds. High-performance liquid chromatography identified calycosin as a chemical marker, along with liquiritigenin, isoliquiritigenin, and formononetin. The propolis extract and the chloroform fraction inhibited Staphylococcus aureus growth with a bactericidal effect, while for Escherichia coli , a bacteriostatic effect was observed at concentrations below 1000 µg/mL. The AgNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, confirming surface plasmon resonance, and their morphology and size were analyzed using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, with elemental composition assessed via energy-dispersive spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction showed the crystalline structure. Fourier-transform infrared spectra indicated that carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in flavonoids reduce silver ions and contribute to the nanoparticles' chemical stability. The nanoparticles synthesized from the propolis extract showed enhanced antibacterial potential, with efficacy against E. coli (MIC 25 µg/mL, MBC 50 µg/mL) compared to S. aureus (MIC 100 µg/mL, MBC 100 µg/mL), and demonstrated selectivity for Gram-negative bacteria over murine macrophages (CC 50 83.92 μg/mL). These nanoparticles exhibited maximum absorption in the UV-Vis region at 418 nm, with a spherical silver core encapsulated by compounds from propolis, hydrodynamic diameter of 252.47 ± 1.42 nm, a zeta potential of −51.80 ± 0.70 mV, and a polydispersity index of 0.218 ± 0.01, indicating high chemical stability. These findings underscore Amazon red propolis as a sustainable resource for developing selective and stable antibacterial agents.

While temozolomide (TMZ) has been a cornerstone in the treatment of newly diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM), a significant challenge has been the emergence of resistance to TMZ, which compromises its clinical benefits. Additionally, the nonspecificity of TMZ can lead to detrimental side effects. Although TMZ is capable of penetrating the blood-brain barrier (BBB), our research addresses the need for targeted therapy to circumvent resistance mechanisms and reduce off-target effects. This study introduces the use of PEGylated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) with octyl group modifications (C8-MSN) as a nanocarrier system for the delivery of docetaxel (DTX), providing a novel approach for treating TMZ-resistant GBM. Our findings reveal that C8-MSN is biocompatible in vitro, and DTX@C8-MSN shows no hemolytic activity at therapeutic concentrations, maintaining efficacy against GBM cells. Crucially, in vivo imaging demonstrates preferential accumulation of C8-MSN within the tumor region, suggesting enhanced permeability across the blood-brain tumor barrier (BBTB). When administered to orthotopic glioma mouse models, DTX@C8-MSN notably prolongs survival by over 50%, significantly reduces tumor volume, and decreases side effects compared to free DTX, indicating a targeted and effective approach to treatment. The apoptotic pathways activated by DTX@C8-MSN, evidenced by the increased levels of cleaved caspase-3 and PARP, point to a potent therapeutic mechanism. Collectively, the results advocate DTX@C8-MSN as a promising candidate for targeted therapy in TMZ-resistant GBM, optimizing drug delivery and bioavailability to overcome current therapeutic limitations. © 2024 The Authors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the disinfection effect of Near-UV LED light, which is pulsed using PWM control, on Staphylococcus aureus. To evaluate the disinfection effect of Near-UV LED light, three types of Near-UV LEDs with wavelengths of 395 nm, 385 nm, and 365 nm were installed within a sealed space inside an incubator and energized with a forward current of 1000 mA and a forward voltage of 3.6 V, and the disinfection rate under each type of light was assessed. Additionally, the disinfection effect was evaluated when the same three types of Near-UV LEDs were pulsed with a 50% duty cycle. As a result, 100% disinfection was achieved with 365 nm Near-UV LED direct-current irradiation for 120 seconds, and a 93% disinfection rate was obtained with pulsed irradiation for 150 seconds. © 2024 IEEE.
