Allele frequencies of 15 autosomal STR loci among 540 Myanmarese individuals in Thailand

Allele frequencies of 15 autosomal STR loci were established from 540 unrelated Myanmarese individuals using the Thailand Office of Police Forensic Science database. The DNA profiles were provided anonymized with only nationality and gender acknowledged. The allele frequencies were calculated under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The range of allele frequencies was 0.0009–0.5389. Heterozygosity ranged from 0.6204 to 0.8759, probability of identity from 0.0271 to 0.2100, and probability of paternity exclusion from 0.3645 to 0.7579. The information provided in this paper concerns the Myanmarese population in Thailand and could be used for forensic statistical analysis and further individual identification. © 2022 The Authors

The study determined the effect of incorporating Momordica charantia leaf powder (MCLP) into corn-starch 3D food-printing ink as a functional ingredient. The effects of the particle size (75, 131, and 200 μm) and quantity of MCLP on 3D printing performance, structural, textural, and rheological properties of corn starch gel were evaluated with different concentrations (5, 10, and 15% (w/w)) of corn starch. The viscoelastic properties of food inks were determined considering their behavior during extrusion and self-recovery after printing. Scanning electron microscope was used to characterize the microstructure. Based on the results, a high starch content (15%) with 5% MCLP was more favorable for 3D food printing. In addition, 3D printing performance, textural and rheological properties of formulated ink was mainly governed by the particle size of MCLP. The food ink with a 5% mass fraction of 200 μm MCLP had the highest printing precision and the best masticatory properties. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The most common construction material used in Taiwan is concrete, potentially contaminated by geologic heavy metals (HMs). Younger children spend much time indoors, increasing HM exposure risks from household dust owing to their behaviors. We evaluated arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) concentrations in fingernails among 280 preschoolers between 2017 and 2023. We also analyzed HM concentrations, including As, Cd, Pb, chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn), in 90 household dust and 50 road dust samples from a residential area where children lived between 2019 and 2021 to deepen the understanding of sources and health risks of exposure to HMs from household dust. The average As, Cd, and Pb concentrations in fingernails were 0.12 ± 0.06, 0.05 ± 0.05, and 0.95 ± 0.77 μg/g, respectively. Soil parent materials, indoor construction activities, vehicle emissions, and mixed indoor combustion were the pollution sources of HMs in household dust. Higher Cr and Pb levels in household dust may pose non-carcinogenic risks to preschoolers. Addressing indoor construction and soil parent materials sources is vital for children's health. The finding of the present survey can be used for indoor environmental management to reduce the risks of HM exposure and avoid potential adverse health effects for younger children. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Objectives: To evaluate changes in the age at menarche in Asian populations. Study design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: We included 548,830 women from six countries in Asia. The data were sourced from 20 cohorts participating in the Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC) and two additional cohort studies: Japan Multi-institutional Collaborative Cohorts (J-MICC), and Japan Nurse health Study (JNHS) with data on age at menarche. Joinpoint regression was used to evaluate changes in age at menarche by birth year and by country. Results: The study includes data from cohorts in six Asian countries namely, China, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. Birth cohorts ranged from 1873 to 1995. The mean age of menarche was 14.0 years with a standard deviation (SD) of 1.4 years, ranged from 12.6 to 15.5 years. Over 100 years age at menarche showed an overall decrease in all six countries. China showed a mixed pattern of decrease, increase, and subsequent decrease from 1926 to 1960. Iran and Malaysia experienced a sharp decline between about 1985 and 1990, with APC values of −4.48 and −1.24, respectively, while Japan, South Korea, and Singapore exhibited a nearly linear decline since the 1980s, notably with an APC of −3.41 in Singapore from 1993 to 1995. Conclusions: Overall, we observed a declining age at menarche, while the pace of the change differed by country. Additional long-term observation is needed to examine the contributing factors of differences in trend across Asian countries. The study could serve as a tool to strengthen global health campaigns. © 2024 The Royal Society for Public health

Oxidative stress is a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of various cardiovascular diseases. Rhodiola, a traditional Chinese medicine, is recognized for its potent antioxidant properties. Salidroside, a phenylpropanoid glycoside derived from Rhodiola rosea, has shown remarkable antioxidant capabilities. This study aimed to elucidate the potential protective mechanisms of Rhodiola and salidroside against H2O2-induced cardiac apoptosis in H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells. H9c2 cells were exposed to H2O2 for 4 h, and subsequently treated with Rhodiola or salidroside for 24 h. Cell viability and apoptotic pathways were assessed. The involvement of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) and the activation of extracellular regulated protein kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2) were investigated. H2O2 (100 μM) exposure significantly induced cardiac apoptosis in H9c2 cells. However, treatment with Rhodiola (12.5, 25, and 50 μg/mL) and salidroside (0.1, 1, and 10 nM) effectively attenuated H2O2-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis. This protective effect was associated with IGF1R-activated phosphorylation of ERK1/2, leading to the inhibition of Fas-dependent proteins, HIF-1α, Bax, and Bak expression in H9c2 cells. The images from hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunofluorescence assays also revealed the protective effects of Rhodiola and salidroside in H9c2 cells against oxidative damage. Our findings suggest that Rhodiola and salidroside possess antioxidative properties that mitigate H2O2-induced apoptosis in H9c2 cells. The protective mechanisms involve the activation of IGF1R and subsequent phosphorylation of ERK1/2. These results propose Rhodiola and salidroside as potential therapeutic agents for cardiomyocyte cytotoxicity and apoptosis induced by oxidative stress in heart diseases. Future studies may explore their clinical applications in cardiac health. © 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Urbanization converts natural lands into anthropogenic-disturbed soils, which can dramatically influence soil biota. However, how urbanization influences patterns of soil biodiversity and the effects on habitat sensible groups, generalist and specialist species, are poorly understood. Here, we examined the responses of diversity and community composition of soil nematodes, the most abundant metazoans on Earth, to several urban land use types (i.e., forests, farmlands, green belts, hospitals, industrials, urban parks, and residential areas) related to urbanization. We found moderate effects of land use and its associated variables on patterns of species richness, but more dramatic changes in the abundance of habitat specialists versus generalists. Specifically, while specialists tended to be reduced, primarily due to an increase in soil pH, generalists were robust to land use changes, buffering the overall effect on the overall nematode diversity. Furthermore, our results showed that human density, as a proxy of urbanization intensity, was linked to changes in soil pH between land use types. Our results suggest that urbanization could influence the community composition of soil nematodes by favoring generalists over specialists. Together, these findings highlight the importance of understanding and considering the ecological consequences of urbanization on soil microfauna specialization in light of the urban land use management. © 2024, The Authors. BackgroundTelehealth is an emerging field of study and has drawn attention to deliver health service to patients. Recently findings demonstrated heterogeneity in the telehealth terminology between stakeholders and a lack of agenda for research priorities in telehealth in musculoskeletal pain research. ObjectivesConsensus on standardization of terminology to be used in telehealth among all interested parties in musculoskeletal pain. Establish research priorities for the practice of musculoskeletal pain telehealth . MethodsThis is an international modified three-round e-Delphi survey. We invited researchers, clinicians, consumer representatives, industry partners/developers, healthcare managers, and policymakers identified via Expertscape, PubMed database, social media, and a snowball sampling strategy to recruit other potential participants. We sent a survey by email with a link to the Typeform® platform. We provided a list of potential terminologies and research priorities based on published studies with adjustments through the International Steering Committee and presented to panel members’ participants. Firstly, panel members selected a range of telehealth terminologies for musculoskeletal pain research known. Subsequently, panel members were asked to rate the level of agreement of each terminology to be used in musculoskeletal pain research and the research priorities for musculoskeletal pain research field. A 5-point Likert scale was used to rate the level of agreement of each item and a priori cut-off points of at least 80% were used to establish consensus. Descriptive analysis of the results was performed with mean and standard deviations, and absolute and relative frequencies. ResultsFrom 694 potential participants invited, 160-panel members participated in the first round, 133 in the second round, and 134 in the third round. Background: Patients with critical illness may present with disease-related malnutrition upon intensive care unit (ICU) admission. They are at risk of development and progression of malnutrition over the disease trajectory because of inflammation, dysregulated metabolism, and challenges with feeding. Methods: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) convened a panel of 36 clinical nutrition experts to develop consensus-based guidance statements addressing the diagnosis of malnutrition during critical illness, using a modified Delphi approach with a requirement of ≥75% agreement. Results: 1. To identify pre-existing malnutrition, we suggest evaluation within 48 hours of ICU admission when feasible (100% agreement) or within 4 days (94% agreement). 2. To identify the development and progression of malnutrition, we suggest reevaluation of all patients every 7-10 days (97% agreement). 3. To identify progressive loss of muscle mass, we suggest evaluation of muscle mass as soon as feasible (92% agreement), and again after 7-10 days (89% agreement). 4. To identify the development and progression of malnutrition prior to and after ICU discharge, we suggest reevaluating nutritional status prior to ICU discharge and during clinical visits that follow (100% agreement). Conclusion: Research using consistent etiologic and phenotypic variables offers great potential to assess the efficacy of nutrition interventions for critically ill patients with malnutrition. Assessment of these variables at during and beyond the ICU stay will clarify the trajectory of malnutrition and enable exploration of impactful treatment modalities at each juncture. GLIM offers a diagnostic approach that can be used to identify malnutrition in critically ill patients. © 2025 The Authors
