Carboxymethyl-glucans are derived solubles of β-D-glucans, known to be biologically active molecules presenting immunomodulation, antioxidant and platelet anti-aggregation activity. This study evaluated the effect of carboxymethyl-glucan from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CM-G) on vascular reactivity, investigating the mechanisms of action involved; atrial contractility and transient calcium in ventricular cardiomyocytes. Experiments were designed with healthy animals which were divided into two groups: one treated orally with CM-G at a dose of 50 mg/kg, daily, during 21 days; and another with saline solution. Afterward, experiments were carried out using an animal model of acute myocardial infarction induced by isoproterenol , in which on days 20 and 21 of the experiment were administered 85 mg/kg/day of isoproterenol by subcutaneous injection . On the 22th day, at 48 h after administration of the first isoproterenol dose, experimental tests were conducted. CM-G provoked concentration dependent vasorelaxant effect in functional endothelium vessels. This effect was significantly reduced in pre-incubated rings with L-NAME, ODQ or carboxy-PTIO. Treatment with CM-G increased the effectiveness of acetylcholine-induced relaxation. The results show that CM-G positively modulated the vascular endothelium, leading to relaxation in the rat aorta via NOS/NO/sCGs, in addition to acting on the myocardium, inducing a negative inotropic effect.

health assistance depends essentially on effective information providing for professionals. Presently visual information plays an outstanding role concerning patients’ status without necessity of invading procedures. The diagnosis related to stage and texture in pressure ulcers (PU) is considered as a classification procedure, based on the image colors. As a training set this study captured 18 PU images from nine persons. RGB mean values were adopted as features to characterize the images. Classification used an ID3 similar algorithm. It achieved 83.3% accuracy concerning color and stage, as well as 88.9% concerning color and texture. So the technique was effective for automatic determination of PU stage and PU texture based on its color. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Exposure Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAHs) in Childcare Centers of Muang, Nakhon Ratchasima

This study aims to characterize airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as of particulate and vapor phases variation. The samples were collected from the childcare centers where divided into urban and rural areas in Nakhon Ratchasima Province of Thailand. The airborne samples were collected from five childcare centers during the dry season in the year 2017. The PAHs species were determined by the gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GS/MS) method. Results show that the total concentrations of PAHs were higher than vapor phase that both similar in urban area and rural area. The dominant PAHs compounds of both urban and rural areas were benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(a,h)anthracene and indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, respectively. Furthermore, the concentrations of PAHs in municipality (urban) childcare centers were higher than rural childcare centers area of Nakhon Ratchasima province. The risks associated with exposure to PAHs were evaluated using the TEF approach. The estimated value of lifetime lung cancer risks children in urban were significantly (p < 0.05) 2 times of children in rural, thus demonstrating that exposure to PAHs at levels found at urban site may be cause potential health risks.

Accessibility to three-dimensional (3D) technologies, such as 3D scanning systems and additive manufacturing (like 3D printers), allows a variety of 3D applications. For medical applications in particular, these modalities are gaining a lot of attention enabling several opportunities for healthcare applications. The literature brings several cases applying both technologies, but none of them focus on the spreading of how this technology could benefit the health segment. This paper proposes a new methodology, which employs both 3D modelling and 3D printing for building orthoses, which could better fit the demands of different patients. Additionally, there is an opportunity for sharing expertise, as it represents a trendy in terms of the maker-movement. Therefore, as a result of the proposed approach, we present a case study based on a volunteer who needs an immobilization orthosis, which was built for exemplification of the whole process. This proposal also employs freely available 3D models and software, having a strong social impact. As a result, it enables the implementation and effective usability for a variety of built to fit solutions, hitching useful and smarter technologies for the healthcare sector.

We investigated whether genetic susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB) influences lung adenocarcinoma development among never-smokers using TB genome-wide association study (GWAS) results within the Female Lung Cancer Consortium in Asia. Pathway analysis with the adaptive rank truncated product method was used to assess the association between a TB-related gene-set and lung adenocarcinoma using GWAS data from 5512 lung adenocarcinoma cases and 6277 controls. The gene-set consisted of 31 genes containing known/suggestive associations with genetic variants from previous TB-GWAS. Subsequently, we followed-up with Mendelian Randomization to evaluate the association between TB and lung adenocarcinoma using three genome-wide significant variants from previous TB-GWAS in East Asians. The TB-related gene-set was associated with lung adenocarcinoma (p = 0.016). Additionally, the Mendelian Randomization showed an association between TB and lung adenocarcinoma (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.66, p = 0.027). Our findings support TB as a causal risk factor for lung cancer development among never-smoking Asian women.
