Biofuel production using tire waste in fast pyrolysis: A life cycle assessment study

ABSTRACTDespite exceeding 2 billion units annually, the management of waste tires remains a global challenge. Pyrolysis, a thermochemical conversion process, offers a potential waste-to-energy solution with valuable byproducts. However, concerns regarding its environmental sustainability, particularly emissions associated with sulfur content, persist. The aim of this study is to evaluate the environmental impacts of a large-scale pyrolysis reactor processing waste tires using life cycle assessment (LCA) as an environmental impact tool. In this study, using heating fuel oil (HFO) and non-condensable gas (NCG) as heating methods, two pyrolysis scenarios were investigated in terms of their environmental performance. The LCA identified abiotic depletion and acidification as key environmental concerns. The HFO scenario has shown a 15% greater impact on abiotic depletion and a 78% greater impact on acidification compared to the NCG scenario. This difference has been attributed to the higher sulfur content in HFO. Nevertheless, both pyrolysis scenarios have shown positive environmental benefits regarding marine and freshwater ecotoxicity compared to conventional alternatives. These findings support the potential of pyrolysis for sustainable waste tire management while highlighting the need for further optimization to minimize sulfur-related emissions. The findings of this study can be used as a roadmap towards adapting clean technologies such as pyrolysis as a waste management strategy for policymakers by applying holistic system boundaries and regulated pyrolysis production.

Footwear has currently been developed and tested by designers. Appearance is among the most important factors contributing to the popularity and market shares of particular brands and designs targeting on young purchasers. Using athletic footwear as a case study, the present research aims to investigate the pattern of footwear designs–shape, material, and type of shoe-base ergonomics and functionality. It is also bound to examine young purchasers’ perceptions towards aesthetics The research finally recommends a set of design guidelines towards footwear design basing on purchesers’ cognitive and affective perception on footwear appearance.

Musical note similarities are usually verified by subjective tests and timbre comparisons. However, for one with no background in frequency analysis and without spectral clue in spectral comparison, it might not be easy for one to see how similar two sounds are. This work proposed a simple index for similarity measurement of musical notes, based on psychoacoustics of pitch and loudness perception, called musical note similarity index (MNSI). It was intended to use as a clue for spectral comparison and defined as a subtraction inverse of normalized summation of penalty weights for each harmonic amplitude and frequency exceeding the just noticeable differences (JNDs). Experiments were done and results were statistically analyzed. The correlation and t-test analysis showed that the MNSIs were well correlated with the subjective evaluations of sound similarity. Statistically, the Pearson correlation coefficient of the test was 0.9396 with 99% confidence. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper investigates passivity-based pose control via an obstacle avoidance navigation function for three-dimensional (3-D) eye-in-hand visual feedback systems. Firstly, visual motion observer-based pose control for 3-D eye-in-hand visual feedback systems is presented. Next, a path planner to be appropriate for the visual motion error system is designed through an obstacle avoidance navigation function to keep collision-free during servoing. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through computer simulations. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper propose a driving assistance scheme for a powered wheelchair with a force feedback function of its joystick. Generally, a powered wheelchair moves in a human coexistence environment such as a pedestrian way and it is important to move on these environments without a feeling of oppression to other people around it. Therefore, we propose a concept of a dynamic personal space which is a region surrounding a person who can feel comfortable psychologically to other person with a moving wheelchair in the pedestrian flows. A dynamic personal space is defined considering with a relative velocity and acceleration between the powered wheelchair and the pedestrians around it. Using this concept, we develop a driving assistance system using a force feedback of its joystick, which enables the powered wheelchair to move in a human coexistence environment without a feeling of oppression on other people. In this paper, we investigate spatial relationship with a powered wheelchair experimentally and define a dynamic personal space using these results. For verifying its effectiveness, the performance of our system is verified by experiments using our prototype. © 2014 IEEE.

The primary purpose of graphic map design was to determine the factors for each types of map that can meet the demand of the tourists who are different in their destination. The graphic map factors enable us to know the target group and type of map they used that provides the accurate information corresponding to their actual need. Methodologically, the simulation viewing questionnaires were used to examine the opinion and need of the tourists whose interest was different with the type of map they used. In case study, the sample included the foreign tourists in Bangkok territory. This paper examined the graphic map design factors that meet the tourist's need. The results are expected to be used as useful guidelines for map design that satisfies the tourists in context of Thai social and cultural environment that can be recognized at international level. It's not only useful to those tourists, but also to general people.

This paper proposes the ungrounded force display using the grooved cam. Using the human illusion, the user can feel the force in the one direction when they use proposed device. It is mainly configured the cam and the slider. The slider follows the cam and moves translational movement. In this paper, we create the new prototype which solving the problems that emerged from the previous prototype. We evaluate the device using the two experiments. One is the subjective evaluation. Second one is the force presentation from the new prototype as the quantitative evaluation. We could solve problems of previous prototype by changing the cam type from plate to groove and blushless motor, and the new one produce the force more clearly than the previous prototype. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper proposes a new estimation method for the lower limb muscle strength of the elderly that can be easily performed in nursing care facilities. Furthermore, based on the estimated lower limb muscle strength information, this paper proposes a human model that simulates the physical conditions of the elderly and, using this model, proposes a new design method for standing assistance strategy adapted to the physical conditions of the elderly. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it can estimate and model leg muscle strength, which depends on the individual elderly person, in a simple way that can be carried out by staff in nursing care facilities who are not engineering specialists, without the use of specialized measuring equipment such as electromyography. © 2022 IEEE.

The conventional robot arms applied in various fields are demanded to have high force output, high accuracy, high efficiency. But they are seldom applied in human life, because of large weight, rigidity, hazards to people caused by collisions. Therefore the soft robotic arm that is stretchable, light weight, softness without possible of hazards, and high precision control is suitable to deploy in human life. Thus the purpose of this research is to develop the soft robotic arm by using antagonistic pneumatic driven system. In order to realize this concept, the joint activation mechanism is the key component. This study focuses on the angle control of the joint. In this paper, the robot arm made by polyethylene is proposed. Air bags made of polyethylene inside the joint achieve antagonistic driven states. Helical tube made of polyethylene is adhered joint outside for realizing rigidity. It is characterized that control rigidity is realized by controlling the pressure in the helical tube and joint angle is preciously controlled in two degree of freedom by controlling pressure in the air bags. Furthermore, the joint angle can be controlled by controlling the air pressures in the air bags using stretch sensor measuring joint angle. The experimental result confirmed that the driving concept of the joint was well functioned, and the joint angle control was realized by feedback control. © 2019 IEEE.

Window displays, as a part of selling strategies, not only convey the type and positioning of mechanize, but also the promotional strategies and corporate images. The study uses window displays for clothing to examine patterns, selling strategies, merchandize types, and target groups. It investigates the effects of design elements on the customers’ perceptual responding to configurations. The theoretical framework bases on marketing concepts, visual perception principles, Gestalt psychology, and design's principle and elements. Sixty undergraduates, ages 18-23, participated as research subjects. Results derive a design guideline for window displays towards the designated type of intended perception for the particular group.
