eLearning has been utilized as a mode of instruction among medical students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of eLearning platforms in medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines by employing the latent variables of UTAUT2, along with two additional latent variables gathered from various related literature. A sum of 360 medical students participated and answered an online survey that consists of 40 questions. A stepwise multiple linear regression was utilized and found that performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC), can successfully predict the actual use (AU) of medical students with a precision of 54.22%. A higher performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC) can enhance and promote the acceptance of medical eLearning platforms. This is the first study that has examined the acceptance of eLearning platforms among medical students in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of this research can serve as guidelines for the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines for the enhancement of eLearning platforms. Although this study only utilized the latent variables of UTAUT2 along with two additional variables: Learning Value and Instructor Characteristics;the findings of this study would still hold significant value for promoting open innovation in eLearning platforms in medical fields worldwide. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Virtual Humans (VHs) have been employed in multidisciplinary fields to advance interpersonal skills critical to many professional, including law enforcement agents, military personnel, managers, doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Law enforcement agencies in particular have faced a growing need to develop human to human interpersonal training to increase interviewing and interrogation skills. In this paper, we present a prototype VE that has been developed to provide law enforcement agents with effective interview and interrogation training and experiential learning. The virtual training environment will need to be tested and formally evaluated to verify the benefits compared to live exercises and traditional training techniques. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the most difficult problems in the Combinatorial Optimization area. The goal of TSP is to find one path that can travel between all the nodes (instances) of the graph just once (Hamiltonian tour) in the smallest tour, that is, smallest Euclidian distance. In this context, many other meta-heuristics techniques based on evolutionary algorithms have been propose in literature to solve TSP problems. Differential Evolution (DE) is a relatively new simple evolutionary algorithm, which is an effective adaptive approach to global optimization over continuous search spaces. The design principles of DE are simplicity and efficiency. The most distinct feature of DE is that it mutates vectors by adding weighted, random vector differentials to them. Since its invention, DE has been applied with high success on many numerical optimization problems outperforming other more popular meta-heuristics such as the genetic algorithms. Recently, some researchers extended with success the application of DE to complex combinatorial optimization problems with discrete decision variables such as the traveling salesman problem, the machine layout problem, the flow-shop scheduling problem. In this paper, the following discrete DE approaches for the TSP are proposed and evaluated: i) DE approach without local search, ii) DE with local search based on Lin-Kernighan-Heulsgaun (LKH) method, and iii) DE with local search based on Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) and together with LKH method. Numerical study is carried out using the TSPLIB of test TSP problems. In this context, the computational results are compared with the other results in the recent TSP literature. The obtained results show that LKH method is the best method to reach optimal results for TSPLIB benchmarks, but for largest problems, the ED+VNS improve the quality of obtained results.

Paper depicts an architecture expansion for communication and data management that can be used in Remote Experimentation and Game-Based Learning. This architecture is compliant with iLab Shared Architecture and is based upon open source software and hardware, in particular low cost platforms such as the Raspberry Pi 3. It consists of three main entities: user-side interface, experiment-side (lab) application and, interconnecting both, the cloud server enhanced with the messaging intermediator. Architecture takes into account typical requirements for educational institutions, such as open-source technologies, remote systems usage management (service brokerage) and security. In trial implementations, three single-user, remotely operated experiments have been enabled using ELSA-Py, in which students will be able to practice concepts of lean production (LyMIE), object position control (Windball) and image calibration (TabRecon). The integration has been tested and the performance of ELSA-Py architecture as a tool do deploy educational remotely operated systems is discussed.

Business sustainability integration is a complex task and strongly linked to operations management. The challenge is to conduct more sustainable operations through companies? value chain and their network. In sustainable operations management area, maturity models have been developed for specific purposes. However, there is a lack of models that considers sustainability integration through the evolution of sustainable operations? capabilities. Based on literature review, case studies and expert panels, this paper develops and proposes a maturity framework defined by sustainable operations management theory. Its is possible to identify an evolutionary path, which goes from an initial approach focused in compliance aspects and firm?s value protection to an innovative approach, based on corporate social responsibility supporting operations? integration in a sustainable system, and long-term values development. The experts? panel identified key processes areas that need to be prioritized in each level, and also analyzed the adaptation of some elements from Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) to sustainable maturity framework design and development.

This paper deals with the problem of finding the pole(s) in Orthonormal Basis Functions (OBF) models. In fact, any stable system can be exactly represented by an infinite orthonormal functions series, assuming that the basis used in such representation is complete. However, in practice a truncated basis functions expansion is used. For certain basis choice and fixed number of functions, there is a pole or set of poles that minimizes the truncation error. The problem is then to find such set. Therefore, the present paper is focused on the problem of finding the basis functions poles when more than one dynamic is involved, for instance, in SISO Generalized Orthonormal Basis Functions (GOBF) models or MIMO Laguerre, Kautz and/or GOBF models. It is proposed and analyzed here the use of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for such problem. Simulation results presented shows the validity of the proposed method.

The global agribusiness context faces at the same time challenges of feeding a growing global population that is used to safe and nutritious food, opportunities based on innovation, high technology and efficiency in the agri-food production systems from field to table. Given the context, this article aims to present the main key aspects of the circular economy to agro-industrial cooperatives. These contributions were named key aspects, such as circular and symbiotic practices, competitive advantages, innovation, cooperation and barriers and opportunities. The field presents a problem that few literature in fact discusses circular economy approaches in the context of agro-industrial cooperatives. As a methodological procedure, a literature review was carried out in three databases to obtain relevant documents and thus analyse and discuss some characteristics based on circular economy practices applied in agro-industrial cooperatives. As a result, a diagnosis of the current scenario that agro sector organizations are facing in terms of the main rural activities and sustainable practices that relate to the circular economy;measures taken to generate competitive advantage;innovation behaviour;and how linear and circular business models are being applied in the agroindustry. A framework is presented to show potential routes strategies for closing the cycle in an agro-industrial cooperative. The opportunities are based on the implementation of high technology in the field, the use of bioenergy and the development of new circular business models throughout the agro-value chain. The study has contributions to rural properties and managers of cooperatives in terms of waste reduction, innovation generation and increases in activities and processes based on circular economy. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Injection Molding (IM) is considered to be the most important process for mass-producing plastic products. One of the biggest challenges facing injection molders is to determine the best settings for the controllable process variables (CPVs). Selecting the proper settings is crucial because the behavior of the polymeric material during shaping is highly influenced by the process variables. The difficulty of optimizing an IM process is that the performance measures (PMs), such as surface quality or cycle time that characterize the adequacy of the part for its intended purpose usually show conflicting behavior. Furthermore, in actual molding, the CPVs will vary over some range during molding. This inconsistency of the process variables will lead to variability in the PMs. In high precision manufacturing, in particular for micro and nano scale components and devices, this variability needs to be minimized, and if possible eliminated. Thus, the variability in the PMs needs to be included in the optimization problem. The aim of this work is to demonstrate a method based on CAE, statistical testing, artificial neural networks (ANNs), and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to find the optimal compromises between multiple PMs and their variability to prescribe the values for the CPVs in IM. We present an example where the optimization is carried out in two phases. Phase one uses the PMs that are significantly affected by the injection gate location in order to prescribe two possible injection gates. Phase two of the optimization uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to find a PM-based efficient frontier for each injection gate considering process variability. These two efficient frontiers are then compared to select the best location. Other possible applications are discussed.

Agent-based modeling/simulation is an emergent approach to the analysis of social and economic systems. y associating active learning methodologies and digital media as a form to improve educational quality, the diversity of experimentations in engineering education has been motivating researches in many areas with possibilities of increasing both students' knowledge and skills. Control engineering is an area where educational laboratories are usually costly, thus the use of virtual laboratories for remote experimentation became an interesting approach. In this work, it is presented a remote experimentation procedure for the ball and beam system, which is a nonlinear and unstable open loop process. Considering the advanced control topic, multiobjective optimization was introduced in the experiment in order to tune Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers. Through the description of the system model, the multiobjective optimization technique, and the experiment configuration, students can simulate and test their controllers remotely in a real plant. © 2019 IEEE.
