We outline emerging opportunities and challenges to enhance the utility of AI for scientific discovery. The distinct goals of AI for industry versus the goals of AI for science create tension between identifying patterns in data versus discovering patterns in the world from data. If we address the fundamental challenges associated with "bridging the gap" between domain-driven scientific models and data-driven AI learning machines, then we expect that these AI models can transform hypothesis generation, scientific discovery, and the scientific process itself. © 2021, CC BY.

Motivated by Markov decision processes, this paper introduces a form of embedding for Markov chains which is based on the partition of the state space into a manageable number of subsets, with the aim of enabling a decomposition algorithm for calculating long-term costs and probabilities. The decomposition enables the decision maker to derive the long term distribution by making use of evaluations in the domain of the partitions, which presents reduced cardinality with respect to the original state space and hence yields reduced computational effort.

The diagnosis of automation systems in an existing production system through the analysis of the interoperability level between its components represents the first step in its evaluation for improving it towards alignment with Industry 4.0. The analysis of the level of interoperability finds in the multi-criteria decision making methods an auxiliary tool to evaluate and classify the solution. This work uses the AHP method for this evaluation, drawing criteria from the literature and expert experience. The application of the method is illustrated, showing that it can direct investment decisions. © 2017 The Authors

On the side of enhancing the execution of skills, specialists in sports are adopting analysis of kinematics to correct actions of an athlete. By means of technological resources used to measure physical variables and to supply relevant data to trainers, results related to improvements on athletes' performance are being achieved. In this context, this work uses the Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBF-NNs) combined in cascade with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) as a cross-correlation method, likewise Multiobjective Differential Evolution (MODE) and self-adaptive MODE (using JADE - Adaptive Differential Evolution with Optional External Archive - self-adaptation method) for optimization. The RBF-NNs have been applied to predict the swimmers velocity profile being multiple correlation coefficient (R~2) adopted to evaluate the optimization techniques during both estimation and validation stages. A data acquisition system was used to capture the para-swimming athletes' instantaneous velocity data, swimming 25 meters in crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly strokes. Looking at the results achieved, self-adaptive MODE outperforms classical MODE in approach point of view considering all cases studied, finding the best RBF-NN framework to identify the profile of speed in swimming.

This paper presents the design and analysis of welding fixtures based on transient thermal analysis. Welding fixtures is designed to hold and support the workpiece securely during the welding process. The heat transformation from the workpiece could lead the temperature rises and impacts to the welding fixtures. Therefore, the study introduces the development of welding fixtures as one of a safety measure prevents the welder from injury while handling welding process. The conceptual design of welding fixtures and material were applied to conduct the simulation. Transient thermal analysis was performed on temperature and total heat flux by using computer aided engineering software. The result shows the analysis of equivalent stress, total deformation, factors of safety, fatigue life and fatigue damage. Furthermore, the equivalent stress failure theory used to predict yielding in welding fixture design. The design of welding fixtures and material selection were proposed to hold and support the workpiece securely.

An effect of tsunami to hotel occupancy: A case of Phuket, Thailand

As a popular city for global tourists, more than one third of the Phuket GPP depends on the hotel and restaurant sector. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami caused a serious physical damage to hotels and a high cancellation of bookings in the post disaster period, which, in turn, led to most THB 3 billion drop of the hotel and restaurant sector income in 2005 in Phuket. In addition, many tourism facilities in Phuket suffered bankruptcy or a slump, because they started their business again immediately after the reconstruction phase, while tourists did not really come back. This paper is an initiative study of our research project to evaluate the effects of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami on Hotel Occupancy, with a focus on the speed for the physical reconstruction and tourism market recovery. We collected the physical reconstruction period and the hotel occupancy recovery data of six hotels that located in the Patong Beach of Phuket from 2003 to 2017. Through calculation, the average of damage rate (i.e., unavailability of the rooms in this study) is 55.89%, with an average speed for the physical reconstruction to rebuild the rooms about 6.07% of the overall rooms per month. The quotient of these two values indicates that the reconstruction period is around 9.2 months. However, the average period for reconstruction and tourism recovery is about 20 months. There is an about 11 months' delay between that hotel and resorts have finished the reconstruction and the tourists start to visit Phuket as usual. Therefore, the local government, local tourist authority, and hotel entrepreneurs can consider these findings in order to prepare the recovery plan for tourism industry in the future tsunami.

Resolution of one-dimensional bin packing problems using augmented neural networks and minimum bin slack

The objective of this work is to compare the augmented neural network (AugNN) metaheuristic to minimum bin slack (MBS) heuristic to solve combinatorial optimisation problems, specifically, in this case, the one-dimensional bin packing problem (1D-BPP), a class of cutting and packing problems (CPP). CPP are easily found among various industry sectors and its proper treatment can improve the use of stocks in cutting problems or optimise physical space in packing problems. In order to optimise AugNN parameters, a design of experiment (DOE) was applied in order to guide a statistical analysis of different configurations of AugNN. The tests, developed in many benchmark problems found in the literature, showed that MBS heuristic was, in general superior, both in terms of the solution quality, which is about 70% better, and computational time, which is about 90% less. This paper deals with the optimization of grounding grids geometry. The goal is to reduce the amount of material to deploy a grounding grid, while keeping the system security. The touch voltages, step voltages, GPR and ground resistance are parameters of grounding grids and are related to safety aspect. Also discussed is a genetic algorithm used for optimizing ground grids, which can assume any form in a limited space of the project. The simulation is based in images method. The results are presented and discussed. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper deals with the computation of ground resistance, surface voltage, touch voltage and step voltage, to mesh with horizontal wires arranged in different angles. The computer program implemented used in the mathematical modeling is based on the method proposed by Heppe, which allows obtaining the grounding parameters for homogeneous soil and soil stratified in two layers. The results obtained with the proposed method will be compared with other methods in literature. Also will be presented the results of a grounding grid using wires at various angles. © 2016 IEEE.
