Characterization and optimization of material properties during synthesis and processing are frequent problems in materials science and engineering. In the present paper, the use of design of experiments (DOE) to characterize and improve coercivity in cobalt ferrite nanoparticles is described. The sequence of experiments was planned to capitalize on previous experimental runs available. Emphasis is placed on the rationale for choosing the additional runs. The results reveal that the choice of an adequate initial experimental design can save effort and resources in arriving at useful conclusions upon which subsequent experimental runs can be planned, capitalizing on the initial experimental structure. A region with attractive solutions in terms of coercivity, including a local maximum, was identified through the experimental sequences described in this case study. © 2011 Authors.

Artificial bee colony (ABC) is an optimization algorithm inspired on the intelligent behavior of honey bee swarms. It is suitable to be applied when mathematical techniques are impractical or provide suboptimal solutions. As a population-based algorithm, the ABC suffers on large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For that we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the opposition-based ABC algorithm (HPOABC) that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Numerical simulations using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity. Additionally, synthesis results point outs that the HPOABC architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2012 IEEE.

Differential Evolution (DE) is a simple and efficient stochastic global optimization algorithm of evolutionary computation field, which involves the evolution of a population of solutions using operators such as mutation, crossover, and selection. The basic idea of DE is to adapt the search during the evolutionary process. At the start of the evolution, the perturbations are large since parent populations are far away from each other. As the evolutionary process matures, the population converges to a small region and the perturbations adaptively become small. DE approaches have been successfully applied to solve a wide range of optimization problems. In this paper, the parameters set of the Jiles-Atherton vector hysteresis model is obtained with an approach based on modified Differential Evolution (MDE) approaches using generation-varying control parameters based on generation of random numbers with uniform distribution. Several evaluated MDE approaches perform better than the classical DE methods and a genetic algorithm approach in terms of the quality and stability of the final solutions in optimization of vector Jiles-Atherton vector hysteresis model from a workbench containing a rotational single sheet tester. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The importance of efficient utilization of expensive imaging equipment has been brought to full public attention by the current health care debates. In particular, the use of imaging equipments such as Computed Tomography (CT), Mammography (MG) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is known to contribute to the rising cost with health care. Though medical practices and research attempt to address this issue through measuring and improving imaging equipment productivity, the analysis has mainly focused on enterprise (hospital, clinical) level instead of operational (examination) level. This is due to the lack of technical data available from medical imaging. We have recently developed and implemented an enterprise wide imaging dose tracking system for Mayo Clinic which enables a comprehensive study on imaging equipment utilization. In this research, we first propose three standardized productivity metrics to study the imaging equipment productivity. Design of experiment is then conducted to identify significant factors affecting equipment productivity and utilization. The insights can be gained for medical administrators to better allocate resource and schedule resource utilization that in turn may reduce health care expenses.

This paper presents a method for visualization of displacement between the centre of the femoral head and acetabulum cavity centre. The measurement is performed in 3D tomography reconstructed images. The femoral head and acetabulum cavity can be represented by synthetic spheres and can be reconstructed based on the slice information of each bone of the joint. With the two spheres it is possible to measure the degree of the displacement between the centres. This representation gives support to the specialized doctors in their diagnostic of hip subluxation in children with cerebral paralysis, once that this problem causes pain because the acetabulum and femur disengagement. The proposal method is a compilation of some computational techniques of image handling such as bone segmentation using Hough Transform, chain code for reduction of the number of the points, Delaunay triangulation to perform a 3D reconstruction and OpenGL graphic library. A software prototype was constructed to validate the method proposed.

Prosthesis can be seen as a complex product and its project requires a formal method to consistent development. In this research, the main objective is to determine a feasible method for the creation of virtual models of anatomic human prosthesis. The work presents a conceptual model based on digital images applied in 3D reconstruction of computed tomography scans. The proposed method uses an automatic way based on genetic algorithm to build the virtual models to bone geometry. The CAD system can be used to build the geometric models in preparing to prosthesis generation by the production viewpoint. The problem of open contour is addressed. A case study to fill a missing area in skull is used to demonstrate the process. The work involves some technologies as CAD modeling, image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms that can be applied together in order to obtain a virtual model to prosthesis conception.

The objective of the economic dispatch problem (EDP) of electric power generation, whose characteristics are complex and highly nonlinear, is to schedule the committed generating unit outputs so as to meet the required load demand at minimum operating cost while satisfying all unit and system equality and inequality constraints. Recently, as an alternative to the conventional mathematical approaches, modern meta-heuristic optimization techniques have been given much attention by many researchers due to their ability to find an almost global optimal solution in EDPs. Research on merging evolutionary computation and quantum computation has been started since late 1990. Inspired on the quantum computation, this paper presented an improved quantum-inspired evolutionary algorithm (IQEA) based on diversity information of population. A classical quantum-inspired evolutionary algorithm (QEA) and the IQEA were implemented and validated for a benchmark of EDP with 15 thermal generators with prohibited operating zones. From the results for the benchmark problem, it is observed that the proposed IQEA approach provides promising results when compared to various methods available in the literature. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
