We consider a parallel method for solving generalized eigen-value problems that arise from molecular orbital computations. We use a moment-based method that finds several eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenvectors in a given domain, which is suitable for master-worker type parallel programming models. The computation of eigen-values using explicit moments is sometimes numerically unstable. We show that a Rayleigh-Ritz procedure can be used to avoid the use of explicit moments. As a test problem, we use the matrices that arise in the calculation of molecular orbitals. We report the performance of the application of the proposed method with several PC clusters connected through a hybrid MPI and GridRPC system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

The present work is focused on the study of indoor thermal comfort control problem in buildings equipped with heating systems. The occupants' thermal comfort sensation is addressed here by a comfort index known as PMV (Predict Mean Vote). In this context, two control algorithms are proposed by using only-one-actuator system associated to the heating system. The methods are based on the model predictive control scheme and on the improvement of the PMV index together with energy minimization. Simulation results - obtained by using the weather data file for the city of Curitiba, Brazil - for two case studies: i ) variations between low and moderate occupants metabolic rates and ii) variations between moderate and high occupants metabolic rates are presented to validate the proposed methodology in terms of room air temperature, relative humidity and PMV control. Injection Molding (IM) is the most important process for mass-producing plastic products. The difficulty of optimizing an IM process is that the performance measures (PMs), usually show conflicting behavior. The aim of this work is to demonstrate a method utilizing CAE, statistical testing, artificial neural networks (ANNs), and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to find the best compromises between multiple PMs and their variability. Two case studies are presented. A case study based on a virtual part is presented in detail in order to illustrate this method. The second case study is experimentally based, using the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) mold, to illustrate how this approach applies when only experimental results are available.

This paper proposes a supervised version of a learning algorithm for a constructive neuro-immune network. The proposed methodology is developed by taking ideas from the immune system and learning vector quantization. The resulting classification algorithm is characterized by high-performance, similar to the ones produced by alternative methods in the literature, and parsimonious solutions, with a much smaller set of prototypes per class when compared with the other approaches. The number of prototypes is automatically defined by the convergence criterion. The algorithm requires a single user-defined parameter for training, associated with the convergence criterion, and the computational cost is sufficiently reduced to support applications involving large data sets.

The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer. The results are reported in this paper. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Injection Molding (IM) is considered to be the most important process for mass-producing plastic products. One of the biggest challenges facing injection molders is to determine the best settings for the controllable process variables (CPVs). Selecting the proper settings is crucial because the behavior of the polymeric material during shaping is highly influenced by the process variables. The difficulty of optimizing an IM process is that the performance measures (PMs), such as surface quality or cycle time that characterize the adequacy of the part for its intended purpose usually show conflicting behavior. Furthermore, in actual molding, the CPVs will vary over some range during molding. This inconsistency of the process variables will lead to variability in the PMs. In high precision manufacturing, in particular for micro and nano scale components and devices, this variability needs to be minimized, and if possible eliminated. Thus, the variability in the PMs needs to be included in the optimization problem. The aim of this work is to demonstrate a method based on CAE, statistical testing, artificial neural networks (ANNs), and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to find the optimal compromises between multiple PMs and their variability to prescribe the values for the CPVs in IM. We present an example where the optimization is carried out in two phases. Phase one uses the PMs that are significantly affected by the injection gate location in order to prescribe two possible injection gates. Phase two of the optimization uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to find a PM-based efficient frontier for each injection gate considering process variability. These two efficient frontiers are then compared to select the best location. Other possible applications are discussed.

One of the main problems related to regulatory network reconstruction from expression data concerns the small size and low quality of the available dataset. When trying to infer a model from little information it is necessary to give much more precedence to generalization, rather than specificity, otherwise, any attempt will be fated to overfitting. In this paper we address this issue by focusing on data sparseness and noisy information, and propose a density estimation technique that achieves regularized curves when data is scarce. We first compare the proposed method with the EM algorithm for mixture models on density estimation problems. Next, we apply the method, together with Bayesian networks, on realistic simulations of static gene networks, and compare the obtained results with the standard discrete Bayesian network model. We intend to demonstrate that adopting a discrete approach is not justifiable when only a small amount of information is available.
