This paper is concerned with the mixed 2/ ∞ control problem combined with robust pole placement in linear matrix inequality (LMI) regions. Continuous-time linear systems subject to polytopic parametric uncertainties are studied. Based on Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and LMIs, a hybrid algorithm is presented for numerical computation of a robust fixed-order, static or dynamic, output feedback controller. This approach does not require that all specifications are enforced by a single closed-loop Lyapunov function. This allows to reduce the conservatism of the usual existing methods. In addition, this approach can be used for synthesis for reduced or full order controllers. Examples borrowed from the, literature are discussed to validate this approach. © 2004 IEEE.

The manufacturing industry is undergoing a major transformation based on the emerging industry 4.0 technologies, such as cloud computing, big data, internet of things and cyber-physical systems. These novelty technologies aim at providing central management for the user’s flexible manufacturing requirements and information. Also, the advent of these technologies has transformed the process planning and became crucial for the building of knowledge-based process planning environments. However, current praxis cannot deal with all semantic issues within this new paradigm, as requirements must be clear, consistent, measurable, stand-alone, testable, unambiguous, unique and verifiable. In this context, multicriteria decision analysis models have gained focus of the scientific and industrial communities as a support tool for the decision-making process in the product development and advanced manufacturing as these processes excel in environments with numerous and conflicting alternatives, providing the optimal alternative. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to highlight the current issues and research tendencies regarding ontology-based interoperability systems, multicriteria decision analysis and their integration. To achieve this goal, it will be applied a literature review on the targeted technologies, discussing the current tendencies of the field and the main issues regarding their implementation and integration. Finally, the paper points themes for further research and indicates viable concepts that can compose a solution for the gaps in a systematic manner. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

On the side of enhancing the execution of skills, specialists in sports are adopting analysis of kinematics to correct actions of an athlete. By means of technological resources used to measure physical variables and to supply relevant data to trainers, results related to improvements on athletes' performance are being achieved. In this context, this work uses the Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBF-NNs) combined in cascade with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) as a cross-correlation method, likewise Multiobjective Differential Evolution (MODE) and self-adaptive MODE (using JADE - Adaptive Differential Evolution with Optional External Archive - self-adaptation method) for optimization. The RBF-NNs have been applied to predict the swimmers velocity profile being multiple correlation coefficient (R~2) adopted to evaluate the optimization techniques during both estimation and validation stages. A data acquisition system was used to capture the para-swimming athletes' instantaneous velocity data, swimming 25 meters in crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly strokes. Looking at the results achieved, self-adaptive MODE outperforms classical MODE in approach point of view considering all cases studied, finding the best RBF-NN framework to identify the profile of speed in swimming.

Currently, changes in the customer’s mindset and increased flexibility in manufacturing shifted competition between companies to focus on the product’s value rather than its cost. In this context, Product-Service systems (PSSs) are an alternative to traditional value propositions (i.e. pure products, pure services) by combining services with products and providing an experience to customers. In recent decades, PSSs were expanded from solely business aspects to engineering aspects and technical considerations in their scope, such as the paradigms of Technical PSS, industrial PSS, Digitalized PSS and Cyber-Physical PSS. More recently, due to the application of Industry 4.0 concepts, there is a significant increase of "smart technologies", i.e. sensors;connectivity;mobile application, in PSSs, naming it a new paradigm on the field, known as Smart PSSs. In this context, this research aims to explore and discuss current issues related to the integration of flexible manufacturing processes and Smart PSSs through a literature review and analysis, regarding information sharing, traceability and system reconfiguration based on customer’s requirements. Found literature points to gaps in the theme related to semantic issues and design issues regarding the dynamic reconfiguration of the manufacturing process and the Smart PSS. The modern approaches to the theme, as found in literature, are still not able to cope with the semantic barriers and high volume of heterogeneous information in a holistic manner. Conclusions point that further investigation of the cited issues is required in a systematic manner, as well as the development of models that can cope with the presented issues. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Hoshin Kanri is a model for strategy management that was conceived in Japan and is usually applied in the context of Total Quality Management (TQM) and lean implementations. This model is recognized for its strength to build the link between business strategy and business execution. The limited universe of empirical research about Hoshin Kanri, in addition to the resurgence of interest in it amongst western managers, who may face cultural challenges in Hoshin Kanri implementation, leads to the necessity of systematizing a set of universally applicable guiding principles for Hoshin Kanri initiatives. An initial model for guidelines was developed in a previous work through a systematic literature review supported by content analysis techniques. However, in order to develop guidelines that are as relevant as possible for the context of companies, the model must be refined through an empirical approach that takes into account practical experiences from different experts. This work fulfills this through a systematic approach by applying expert interviews for the successive refinement of the guidelines model. The results comprise the refined and confirmed model of guidelines regarding the process and the context of Hoshin Kanri and the discussion about conceptual foundations of the model.

Organizational models of production systems that focus on services and servitization are experiencing an increase in an application. These models emphasize the value proposition for the customer and a better understanding of the value creation process. Additionally, the emergence of new technologies such as those associated with Industry 4.0 also requires well-structured and results-oriented processes. In this perspective, although there are several tools for measuring both operations and organizational performance, the literature still lacks tools that integrate and align these two perspectives, accounting for activities at the operational level that reflect objectives at the strategic level, and vice-versa. Therefore, a procedure for aligning process performance (operations' performance) and strategic performance (organizational performance) in a service context is proposed. This procedure is based on three main components identified through a literature review: (1) guidelines associated with enterprise engineering that focus on processes, developed by Deschamps (2013);(2) a set of critical success factors for implementation of performance measurement systems that focus on organizational performance, developed by Keathley (2016);and (3) ten determinants of service quality, proposed by Parasuraman (1985). The alignment procedure is presented as being mediated by Parasuraman's model, relating enterprise engineering guidelines and critical success factors. © 2018 Institute of industrial Engineers (IIE). Biofuel production using tire waste in fast pyrolysis: A life cycle assessment study

ABSTRACTDespite exceeding 2 billion units annually, the management of waste tires remains a global challenge. Pyrolysis, a thermochemical conversion process, offers a potential waste-to-energy solution with valuable byproducts. However, concerns regarding its environmental sustainability, particularly emissions associated with sulfur content, persist. The aim of this study is to evaluate the environmental impacts of a large-scale pyrolysis reactor processing waste tires using life cycle assessment (LCA) as an environmental impact tool. In this study, using heating fuel oil (HFO) and non-condensable gas (NCG) as heating methods, two pyrolysis scenarios were investigated in terms of their environmental performance. The LCA identified abiotic depletion and acidification as key environmental concerns. The HFO scenario has shown a 15% greater impact on abiotic depletion and a 78% greater impact on acidification compared to the NCG scenario. This difference has been attributed to the higher sulfur content in HFO. Nevertheless, both pyrolysis scenarios have shown positive environmental benefits regarding marine and freshwater ecotoxicity compared to conventional alternatives. These findings support the potential of pyrolysis for sustainable waste tire management while highlighting the need for further optimization to minimize sulfur-related emissions. The findings of this study can be used as a roadmap towards adapting clean technologies such as pyrolysis as a waste management strategy for policymakers by applying holistic system boundaries and regulated pyrolysis production.

A semantic reconciliation view to support the interoperable information relationships in product design and manufacturing

Global competitiveness has challenged manufacturing industry to rationalize different ways of bringing to the market new products in a short lead-time with competitive prices, high quality, and customization. Modern Product Development Process (PDP) has been requiring simultaneously collaboration of multiple groups, exchanging information from multiple perspectives within and across enterprise boundaries. However, semantic interoperability issues (misinterpretation and mistakes) in view of the information heterogeneity from multiple perspectives and their relationships. This research proposes a semantic reconciliation view to support the interoperable information relationships in product design and manufacturing. This view is part of the conceptual framework of an Interoperable Product Design and Manufacturing System (IPDMS). The semantic reconciliation method uses three approaches (Adjustment Context, Ontology Intersection, and Semantic Alignment) to provide support for the semantic information relationships across the product design and manufacturing. The method is applied in a rotational thin-wall plastic injected design and manufacturing and evaluated through the development of semantic rules responsible for the information mapping of sharing, conversion and translation. This semantic rules were modeled in Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) supported by Web Ontology Languages (OWL). Sequentially, the potential benefits and limitation of the method was discussed, contributing to the semantic information interoperability during the development of complex products. © 2017

Prosthesis can be seen as a complex product and its project requires a formal method to consistent development. In this research, the main objective is to determine a feasible method for the creation of virtual models of anatomic human prosthesis. The work presents a conceptual model based on digital images applied in 3D reconstruction of computed tomography scans. The proposed method uses an automatic way based on genetic algorithm to build the virtual models to bone geometry. The CAD system can be used to build the geometric models in preparing to prosthesis generation by the production viewpoint. The problem of open contour is addressed. A case study to fill a missing area in skull is used to demonstrate the process. The work involves some technologies as CAD modeling, image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms that can be applied together in order to obtain a virtual model to prosthesis conception.

Traffic flow characterization is critical for transportation systems and urban infrastructure planning. In most major cities in Latin America, this characterization is carried out visually by a group of observers during one-hour sampling periods. Automating this process should result in higher consistency and reliability in the output statistics, as well as helping keep the people in charge of this process safe. In this project, an automatic vehicle counting and classification system prototype is presented. The system uses video images previously recorded thru a camcorder and, upon an initial setup session, proves capable of detecting, counting and classifying the passing vehicles to an acceptable error rate. The preliminary evaluation is promising and provides a solid base for the development of the complete system.
