Towards a smart reconfiguration process for complex product manufacturing based on industrial robot cells

The cost for companies that can custom their production line with precision and quality, through machining centres and laser cutting machines, is expensive, as the degree of machining freedom increases. Furthermore, the greater the complexity of the product to be manufactured, the more processes and equipment are needed to manufacture it. In this context, this research proposes a smart reconfiguration process for complex product manufacturing, based on industrial robotic manipulators, with 6 or more degrees of freedom, superior to conventional methods. With the integration of SolidWorks and PowerMill software, it was possible to apply the solution in an experimental case of blisk manufacturing milling and laser cutting of an engine head gasket. With CAD, CAM and robot simulation by the PowerMill tool, it was possible to validate the proposed solution, obtaining process data and information of milling and laser cutting. With the analysis of the simulation results, it was possible to identify the limitations of the project, such as (i) restriction in the precision of the machining of the product; (ii) amount of real-time supervision and monitoring information; and (iii) work area limit. However, the project can integrate two manufacturing processes to machine and cut complex parts with flexibility.

Medical wastes bring probable hazards and public risks if not handled correctly, especially during the covid-19 pandemic. Waste management costs are rising due to continues devastation of covid-19 virus. Increased care and handling processes have been implemented to avoid further spreading the infection while ensuring the proper disposal. Given this, medical waste related to covid-19, including other wastes generated by medical facilities, requires delicate integration into the waste management process thru a reverse logistics network for cost-efficient collection, processing, and transport style. Using AMPL software as solving tool, this paper was designed to utilize a mixed-integer linear programming model of a reverse logistics network to improve medical waste management by identifying the total minimum cost of the waste disposal cycle from Waste generating facilities, treatment facilities, and to the disposal factory. © 2022 ACM.

High level sports require a steady intensification of training in order to raise the athletes' performance. With the purpose of support swimmers and coaches new biomechanical analysis are been performed, becoming one of the most studied areas in swimming. By using technology resources, Esignificant results related to performance improvements are being achieved. Specific analysis of the movements, strength, velocity and projection allow identifying relevant points that directly impact athletes' results. In this context, this work uses a Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) with training combining the Gustafson-Kessel clustering method and the proposed Modified Differential Evolution (MDE) in order to perform the swimmer velocity profile identification. The main idea is to obtain the dynamic of the velocity profile and to use it to improve the athletes' swim style. Differential Evolution (DE) is an evolutionary algorithm that uses a rather greedy and less stochastic approach to solve problems when compared to other evolutionary methods [1]. However, to achieve good performance with DE, the tuning of control parameters is essential as its performance is sensitive to the choice of the mutation and crossover settings. On the other hand, the RBF-NN is a powerful approach for nonlinear identification. This paper combines the two strategies described above proposing a modified DE algorithm based on the association of a sinusoidal signal and chaotic sequences generated by logistic map for the mutation factor tuning. By using data collected from breaststroke and crawl swim style of an elite female swimmer, the validity and the accuracy of the RBF-NN model have been tested by simulations. Results reveal that it is feasible to establish a good model to represent data experimental related to swimming field. Identification results show that MDE outperforms both other tested classical DE approaches for training RBF-NNs in terms of solution quality. © 2013 IEEE.

Due to the competitive environment complexity, it is asked for an agile decision making process. Managers face the trade-off of available information prompt consumption versus producing higher quality information that demands more time and resources. Dynamic systems features that produce multifaceted analysis based on real-time reliable information characterize performance management and measurement. This paper shows initial results of an operations performance analysis research project that intends to develop a software solution for improving operations managers' decision-making process. Specifically, the initial results produced an understanding on how decision-making process is developed, defining for this purpose information requirements that are organized as performance indicators. This papers shows results of a case study developed in a software house company, it was studied the sales and operations planning process. Process operations were mapped using direct observations, process documentation and manuals, information management systems data, and interviews with the actors that are involved in process development, coordination and interfaces as suppliers and clients. Mapping the process produced an actual view on how decision-making is being developed. Performance indicators were linked to the process and descriptive and multivariate statistical techniques were applied to determine how this process could be more effective.

The present work is focused on the study of indoor thermal comfort control problem in buildings equipped with heating systems. The occupants' thermal comfort sensation is addressed here by a comfort index known as PMV (Predict Mean Vote). In this context, two control algorithms are proposed by using only-one-actuator system associated to the heating system. The methods are based on the model predictive control scheme and on the improvement of the PMV index together with energy minimization. Simulation results - obtained by using the weather data file for the city of Curitiba, Brazil - for two case studies: i ) variations between low and moderate occupants metabolic rates and ii) variations between moderate and high occupants metabolic rates are presented to validate the proposed methodology in terms of room air temperature, relative humidity and PMV control. The first open invited track in multi-objective optimisation for control systems was organised in 2017 with the idea of exchanging ideas and research about how those techniques are valuable for control engineers. Given that control engineering problems are generally multi-objective problems, multi-objective optimisation offers an interesting approach via the simultaneous optimisation of all design objectives. Controller tuning is not except from this. In this paper we perform a review and analysis of the literature, limited to the IFAC environment, to appreciate and detect new tendencies in controller tuning applications via multi-objective optimisation. Time window under consideration is from 2015 to date, coinciding with a previous review on the topic, as well as the emigration of IFAC proceedings to Elsevier.

The use of multiobjective optimization procedures for control tuning has been constantly explored, presenting satisfactory results, and generating significant contributions to control engineering. In this way, the field of robust control can benefit significantly from the integration of multiobjective optimization design procedures for robust Proportional-Integral-Derivative (RPID) controller synthesis, enabling innovative solutions to complex control challenges. Due to this fact, this paper explores an approach to utilize multiobjective optimization algorithms in a simplified procedure, considering uncertain systems in the form of interval plants with uncertain poles, the Kharitonov theorem is used to obtain a region of stability as search space for the multiobjective algorithm, being the optimization process performed over a nominal system model. Two numerical cases and a flexible actuator model were used to demonstrate the procedure for RPI synthesis, resulting in robustly stable controllers with optimized performance over error and control signal effort measures.

Resolution of one-dimensional bin packing problems using augmented neural networks and minimum bin slack

The objective of this work is to compare the augmented neural network (AugNN) metaheuristic to minimum bin slack (MBS) heuristic to solve combinatorial optimisation problems, specifically, in this case, the one-dimensional bin packing problem (1D-BPP), a class of cutting and packing problems (CPP). CPP are easily found among various industry sectors and its proper treatment can improve the use of stocks in cutting problems or optimise physical space in packing problems. In order to optimise AugNN parameters, a design of experiment (DOE) was applied in order to guide a statistical analysis of different configurations of AugNN. The tests, developed in many benchmark problems found in the literature, showed that MBS heuristic was, in general superior, both in terms of the solution quality, which is about 70% better, and computational time, which is about 90% less. This works presents an innovative application of Markov Decision Process (MDP) to a medium-term mining logistics planning problem considering the mine-to-client supply chain. We implemented three distinct algorithms based on state-of-the-art approaches to solve large-scale problems, and compared their results. Furthermore, we combined all three variants in a single novel algorithm that attained fast convergence and may be an alternative to circumvent the curse of dimensionality underlying large scale problems. © 2020 EUCA.

Early recognition of clinical deterioration (CD) has vital importance in patients’ survival from exacerbation or death. Electronic health records (EHRs) data have been widely employed in Early Warning Scores (EWS) to measure CD risk in hospitalized patients. Recently, EHRs data have been utilized in Machine Learning (ML) models to predict mortality and CD. The ML models have shown superior performance in CD prediction compared to EWS. Since EHRs data are structured and tabular, conventional ML models are generally applied to them, and less effort is put into evaluating the artificial neural network’s performance on EHRs data. Thus, in this article, an extremely boosted neural network (XBNet) is used to predict CD, and its performance is compared to eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and random forest (RF) models. For this purpose, 103,105 samples from thirteen Brazilian hospitals are used to generate the models. Moreover, the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to verify whether it can improve the adopted models’ performance. The performance of ML models and Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), an EWS candidate, are evaluated in CD prediction regarding the accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and geometric mean (G-mean) metrics in a 10-fold cross-validation approach.
