Nature-inspired algorithms of the swarm intelligence field perform powerfully and efficiently in solving global optimization problems. Inspired by nature, these metaheuristic algorithms have obtained promising performance over continuous domains of optimization problems. Recently, a new swarm intelligence approach called firefly algorithm (FA) has emerged. The FA is a stochastic paradigm based on the idealized behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. However, to achieve good performance with FA, the tuning of control parameters is essential as its performance is sensitive to the choice of the randomization parameter (α) setting. This paper introduces a FA approach combined with chaotic sequences generated by Zaslavskii map (FACZ) to tune the randomization parameter. Simulations of Loney's solenoid benchmark problem examine the effectiveness of the conventional FA and the proposed FACZ algorithms. Simulation results and comparisons with the FACZ demonstrated that the performance of the FA is promising in the Loney's solenoid case.

The prototyping of products by additive and subtractive technology can vary in: quality, time and costs, depending on the characteristics of the products. The selection of technology often is conditioned the decision of the designer/engineer or operator because of the type of material, size and accuracy. Furthermore, the need to incorporate environmental and sustainable attribute has been addressed by important factors that can facilitate the different approaches that act on sustainable product diversity. This paper presents a decision making model to assist the selection of rapid prototyping technology more adequate on sustainable product conception. This proposes focus to improve all aspects of the triangle called "cost-quality-Time" and provides an effective design of sustainable product, process and its manufacturing. We used the concepts of Design for Manufacturing, Computer Aided Design, Rapid Product Development and Sustainable Development for one sustainable product of relevant structure and material (lightweight dual) to evaluate and validate the proposed model. In the lightweight dual product from the additive process (SLS technology) has been most successful in view of the purpose of the product and its functions, lower cost, shorter execution time, good surface finish, dimensional accuracy and product formation in the injected. The results show comparisons between the prototyping technologies based on decision making criteria to select the technology for designing sustainable products. We present a simulation model of colorectal cancer in a heterogeneous population of individuals. The progression of cancer is modeled and is affected by individuals' characteristics and their screening and mode decisions. A discrete choice model determines these compliance and modality choices. We present a framework for analyzing interventions that affect final outcomes by systematically affecting a change in individual choice. Moreover, recognizing that different sub-populations respond differently to interventions, we present a procedure for choosing the most effective intervention, as defined by outcomes. For this cancer model, we evaluate the cost effectiveness of public health interventions that affect people's choice behavior, using as metrics for cost effectiveness downstream outcomes such as cost of care and life years lost to cancer. We use an original comprehensive synthetic population dataset that represents the population of the State of North Carolina.

We have been studying the use of "Rich Media" to support creative and intelligent human activities. Specifically, for over ten years we have been focusing on the 3D space as a "Rich Medium" and developed many 3D sketch systems that support the design of 3D objects. However, we found that designers in the real world do not use them. The fundamental problem is the lack of an indispensable function for using the 3D space. To overcome this problem, we have proposed "life-sized and operable" design principles. Although the new design concept made the 3D space truly useful and promoted the designer to use such a system, it revealed new problems, i.e., Limited design space. In this paper, we extend this "life-sized and operable" 3D sketch system by using three design spaces, which enables the user to traverse between 2D drawing and 3D drawing spaces, between miniature and actual sizes, between rough sketching and precise design, and among still, operable, and hap tic sketching.

Considering that technical skill is the major determinant characteristic of success among competitive swimmers, it is important to coaches to quantify the differences that make one swimmer more efficient than another. One of the most important grants in swimming is the velocity, which can be related to drag forces and provide substantial information about the swimmer technique. The main purpose of this study was to determine the best model to compare swimmers in terms of velocity. In this work, a Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) was used to model the nonlinearity of swim velocity time series. The RBF-NN parameters were adjusted by using four multiobjective optimization methods. The best results in terms of RBF-NN configuration were obtained by the Differential Evolution based algorithms.

The research direction in modeling complex, chronic conditions for health policy evaluation has been to incorporate individual heterogeneity. This detail makes our models more powerful and relevant. In implementing an individual simulation model of colorectal cancer we have recognized two considerations related to incorporating individual heterogeneity that have not been adequately discussed in the literature. First, there are substantial computational gains and interpretation benefits if an individual's life courses are identical except when differences are directly induced by an intervention. Achieving this is not trivial. We have developed the notion of a “common patient” who is the same between scenarios except for intervention-induced changes. We create the common patient using a careful application of Common Random Numbers (CRN). Second, when we model differentiated individuals we can examine differing impacts of polices on specific sub-groups. This leverages the detail in individual attributes to produce useful results for policy makers.

The paper proposes a model for expanded audit of operations strategy that considers the social, economic and environmental in the process of formulation and review of evidence to validate a sustainable operation. The proposed model calls for the operations strategy of an organization should be linked to 3 vertices: sustainability of operations, strategic indicators and auditing. A management audit aims to provide a thorough analysis of the company taking into account the effects of the changes caused by uncontrollable external variables and thus the challenge of being the first international standard for managing corporate responsibility, focusing on audit and social reporting, the AA1000, presents a strategic integration of sustainability indicators that, using the principles of management audit, planning determines an audit to validate sustainable operations. Thus, the main contribution of this work to the operations strategy is to propose an extensible model that allows auditing incorporate the new demands that are imposed on managers dynamically, but that meet the high performance sustainable.

Organizations are influenced by external demands which can be represented by changes on the markets organizations are part of. Companies are operating on a new context, where the importance of sustainability has been highlighted by events such as environmental problems, social responsibility issues and quality assurance of products and services. Those aspects are represented by the areas of the Triple Bottom-Line (3BL), which treat organizations operational performance on economic, environmental and social aspects. However, organizations are still trying to develop new performance measurement systems, which relate to the 3BL and that can be used for sustainable performance assessment and benchmarking. In order to address this need, this research aims to develop a process that enables standards and guidelines to be used as tools for the establishment of a performance measurement system which can address the needs of integrated management on behalf of sustainability aspects. The method used on the development of this article is based on concepts of the Process Approach methodology from Cambridge University, as well as Business Process Management Notation to represent processes for performance assessment. Those processes were built with a high emphasis on Performance Assessment frameworks and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) theories. The processes generated have been applied in a project of innovation in sustainable management, in which its application enabled to work with requirements from various standards and guidelines in a practical context, through the usage of indicators and performance measurement. Exemplifying the application of this process, the article will aim to clarify the usage of indicators based on standards and guidelines as a tool for sustainability assessment, through an integrated management of an organization set of standards and guidelines.

The need for collaboration across companies and across areas in the same company is a reality that systems, people and other stakeholders must deal with it. When there is sharing of information, communication among entities, interaction and integration, progress occurs and, all these components working together can improve enterprise performance. As the need of these 'inter operations' is real, the interoperability is becoming a key factor for companies facing with collaborative-cooperative environments. Enterprise Interoperability Assessment (EIA) provides a company the opportunity to know their strengths, weaknesses and prioritize actions to improve its performance and maturity. This paper presents concepts regarding Enterprise Interoperability focusing in EIA, including some existing models and establishing relationship with CMMI, a reference adopted worldwide, in order to identify common perspectives.
