Towards safety level definition based on the HRN approach for industrial robots in collaborative activities

Since the first industrial revolution, factories seek to increase their profits by improving their performance and reducing costs in their products. With each new industrial revolution, new ideas on how to reduce costs appear. Currently, in industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, advanced robotics emerges as one of the principal pillars and with-it collaborative robotics. Collaborative robotics is the branch of robotics that has the security systems needed to perform joint activities with humans. However, the quantification of safety level varies depending on the location and more granularly from company to company. This work aims to assign levels of safety that allow a robot to perform a collaborative activity. To propose such values, the work was started with a bibliographical review focused on defining the robots that would be approached, reviewing the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) related to machinery safety and defining the term of collaboration. Then, the method of calculation of the safety indicator was evaluated, in the case covered was the Hazard Rating Number (HRN), and then defined the intervals that will be assigned to the robots that will perform collaborative activities. To validate the defined HRN intervals, a survey was developed and distributed for engineers from automation sector of an automotive company trained in safety, in this survey, categories of robots were placed for the engineers to assign HRN values to them. After the survey, the results were grouped and analyzed analytically. As a result, the proposed HRN intervals were validated because they fit the safety-level stipulated required for a robot to perform collaborative activity. Also, it was concluded that a robot can perform a collaborative activities even if it has not been acquired for this purpose, it is enough that it meets the safety requirements proposed in the work.

The Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller is widely used in industrial applications. In order to evaluate the performance of distinct types of controllers, several benchmark systems are available in the specialized literature. In this work, an alternative approach to tune PID controllers based on the Competition Over Resources (COR) metaheuristic optimization algorithm and TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method is proposed to solve a vapor compression refrigeration system problem, which is a benchmark control challenge. The proposed technique considered the normalization of multiple cost functions to simplify the selection of two PIDs’ parameters, reducing the need of understanding the influences of cost functions variations in complex problems. The proposed controllers outperformed the base line controllers, providing a performance index 68.39% better than the original approach. Finally, the proposed method was compared with other tuning methods.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based stochastic optimization technique, originally developed by Eberhart and Kennedy, inspired by simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. In PSO, the system (swarm) is initialized with a population of random solutions (particles) and searches for optima using cognitive and social factors by updating generations. PSO has been successfully applied to a wide range of applications, mainly in solving continuous nonlinear optimization problems. Based on the PSO and chaos theories, this paper discusses the use of a chaotic PSO approach hybridized with an Implicit Filtering (IF) technique to optimize performance of economic dispatch problems. The chaotic PSO with chaos sequences is the global optimizer and the IF is used to fine-tune the chaotic PSO run in sequential manner. The hybrid methodology is validated for a test system consisting of 13 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects. © 2007 IEEE.

The need for collaboration across companies and across areas in the same company is a reality that systems, people and other stakeholders must deal with it. When there is sharing of information, communication among entities, interaction and integration, progress occurs and, all these components working together can improve enterprise performance. As the need of these 'inter operations' is real, the interoperability is becoming a key factor for companies facing with collaborative-cooperative environments. Enterprise Interoperability Assessment (EIA) provides a company the opportunity to know their strengths, weaknesses and prioritize actions to improve its performance and maturity. This paper presents concepts regarding Enterprise Interoperability focusing in EIA, including some existing models and establishing relationship with CMMI, a reference adopted worldwide, in order to identify common perspectives.

For an organization to develop a sustainable position in today's competitive and volatile market, efforts in increasing its maturity of Industry 4.0 thinking and implementation need to be performed. Inside the context of Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data/Analytics are concepts that are receiving an increased attention of both academics and industry practitioners. However, their implementation is challenging and requires a high level of competences, both in skilled labor and financial resources related to technology selection and implementation. There is a diversity of scenarios in which those two concepts can be applied, especially in large manufacturing enterprises, where large amounts of data are generated, and need to be interpreted, helping managers make better decisions. Hence, it is necessary to organize and better structure projects that conceive, manage, develop and implement IoT and Big Data/Analytics technologies. The objective of this study is to develop a case study presenting the architecture of a small IoT and Big Data/Analytics project in an automotive company. Results suggest that to promote such projects in a larger scale, organizations need to greatly enhance their infrastructure to develop the necessary integration between IoT components and Big Data/Analytics tools.

Industry 4.0 has recently become an ubiquitous topic of study both by academics and practitioners. Beyond the technology application domain, one major issue that most organizations have to face when structuring their efforts towards Industry 4.0 is the identification of viable opportunities for the deployment of Industry 4.0-related technologies. Proof of concept projects are usually developed to address this, as they are an exploratory means to quickly assess the application of a given technology to a specific context. If results are positive, these projects may grow into larger projects that will be used to deploy the considered technologies in a wider scale. This work aims to propose a framework that helps facilitate the assessment of proof of concept projects and their transition into wider scale projects. This framework is based both in the existing literature on Industry 4.0 technologies and in case studies of proof of concept projects that were used to assess such technologies. The framework is composed of three main components: the technologies being evaluated, the design objectives that they meet and the outcomes that are expected. The relationships among these components is also considered, and a process that mediates their use is proposed. © 2018 Institute of industrial Engineers (IIE). All rights reserved.

This work's goal is to recognize variable patterns in a process that will serve as basis for the creation of a mathematic model capable of predicting the results for caustic contents in the reject from the alumina production process, denominated Red Mud, making it possible to simulate the best combination among entry variables. By that, the reuse of red mud in civil construction industry is intended, minimizing environmental impacts generated by the excess of red mud discarded in the environment by the mentioned process. This work will perform tests with a historical registers database of entry and exit variables for the process's stage that makes this washing. For the creation of the model, the data will be submitted to an Artificial Neural Network for the training of such patterns that should generate predictions with a low error percentage when compared to the simulated data obtained in laboratories.

This paper aims to share the results on forecasting power demand using least-squares support vector machines. The development is based on model estimation taking in consideration the past measurements for power demand and ambient temperature. All approximated models were evaluated using the multiple correlation coefficient (R2) or mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and maximum error combined as quality parameters. © 2009 IEEE.

The manufacturing strategy design process is crucial for an organization's competitiveness because of its role in bridging the gap between strategy and operations. The dynamic and ever-changing nature of today's businesses makes this a difficult task, extremely influenced by internal and external factors. There is a need for a method that can provide the manufacturing function new attributes for its strategy development as a dynamic model that operates in a complex environment. This work addresses this concern by analyzing a well-established framework for manufacturing strategy design composed of six parts and based on a process approach. The analysis is carried out by considering the alignment of the aims of each of the parts of this framework to a set of enterprise engineering guidelines, that determine how well-structured the process from this framework is. Guidelines verify process formalization, process organizational structure, process synchronization, explicit considerations of performance expectations, exception handling, and incorporation of change and improvement mechanisms. The study reveals that there are some gaps in the process regarding the guidelines and further, suggests improvements in it to fill these gaps. The paper develops new aims to the analyzed manufacturing strategy design framework and shows its relevance to the process. This represents advancement to operations management by proposing a reviewed view of the manufacturing strategy design process through an enterprise engineering perspective. Moreover, it presents a process that can contribute to organizations that intend to develop a customized model, adapted to its reality that conciliates external and internal visions, the dynamics of its environment, and the consideration of quanti-qualitatively activities that recognizes all involved stakeholders.

This paper addresses the problem of automated prosthesis modelling and manufacturing, whose machining parameters are based on images extracted from different medical databases. The specific case of 3D surface restoration of a defective skull was used as study case. A method based on adjusted ellipses on skull bone curvature performs the symbolic representation of searching parameters. The superellipse concept permits to define geometric parameters to fit an ellipse on each Computed Tomography slice. Those ellipse descriptors can be used as a template for the retrieval of similar images from databases whose parameters match the sampled image. The similarity is measured according to the best fitness values through an optimization algorithm. The slices found by similarity are retrieved from all databases in order to build the 3D model. Experiments show that the proposed method is a promising technique for content based image retrieval. © 2013 IEEE.
