One of the major concerns in environmental studies is understanding the factors and processes that control and affect water quality. This study aimed to examine the causal relationship between land use/land cover and water quality in Tonle Sap Lake, one of the largest fresh water lakes in Southeast Asia and also to monitor the spatial distribution of water quality in the scale of the lake basin. The approach combines spatial data analysis using Geographic Information System (GIS) and statistics to establish the strength of relationship between land use/land cover derived from classifying Landsat data and water-quality within Tonle Sap subcatchments. These analyses produced indicators (Kendall's tau) showing the strength of correlation between percentages of land use/land cover type as predictor variable and median of water quality parameters as response variable. The retrieval of optically active constituents from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrophotometer (MODIS) was done using bio-optical algorithm applied in turbid inland waters based on the parameterization of the inherent optical properties - absorption and backscattering to come up with the modeled reflectance spectra, which was later, used in an inversion model to obtain the estimated concentration map of Total Suspended Sediments (TSS) and Chlorophyll-a from remote sensing reflectance of the multispectral images. Rank correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis results reveal the statistical relationships between agriculture lands, grasslands, forest covers and population density with TN, PO4P, NO3 and TSS. The results from remote sensing analysis exhibit quite appreciable variation in spatial distribution of water quality which helps identify the spatial aspects of the lake ecosystem more clearly and cost-effectively than point measurements.

Support vector machines (SVMs) have established themselves as a state-of-the-art technique for coping with non-trivial machine learning problems. Among the SVM variants, least-squares SVMs have gained increased attention recently due to the computational benefits they usually entail. Although considered as high-performance models, it is consensual that the applicability of these vector machines depends very much on a proper choice of some control parameters. In this paper, we present a sensitivity analysis study contrasting the performance profiles exhibited by standard and least-squares SVM classifiers with respect to the calibration of the kernel parameter value alone. The results achieved with simulations involving seven datasets indicate that the performance profiles are usually qualitatively similar for the two types of vector machines, both presenting kernel parameter values clearly associated with a better performance, and that the choice of the kernel function seems to be more critical than that of its parameter value.

Various clustering methods are applied to characterizing gene expression data from DNA microarrays. However, to elucidate functional dependencies of genes analysis of their associations is important. The REVerse Engineering ALgorithm (REVEAL) was developed for analyzing the functional dependencies. Although the algorithm has been tested using binary models of genetic networks, it remains unclear how the method or similar technology will operate with systems of continuous variables. In this study, first, the REVEAL was examined using noisy, continuous data and the results suggested that its application to such data required considerable refinement of the algorithm. Then a new implementation method of REVEAL was proposed. This implementation method was tested through numerical experiments. The results of the simulations demonstrated the potential of the proposed method for extracting gene associations.
