Recently, secure information transmission is necessary such that no one can detect information sent via an open channel. In 2013, Chang and Clark proposed a method using lexical substitution and vertex coding for securing the information exchange between parties, such that no one can detect the exchanged information. However, the maximum payload capacity was still 2 bits. This work proposed a method for increasing the payload capacity of Chang's method by applying additional syntactical transformation instead of only lexical substitution and vertex coding. Based on the implementation, the payload resulted by the proposed method may increase minimum 2 bits, such that the minimum payload size is 4 bits, which is greater than Chang's method. © 2016 IEEE.

Macitentan (MACI) is an endothelial receptor antagonist used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The pharmacokinetics and therapeutic efficacy of MACI are significantly influenced by its interaction with plasma proteins, especially bovine serum albumin (BSA). In this study, spectroscopic (fluorescence and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy), electrochemical, and computational techniques were applied to explore the binding properties and interaction mechanisms between MACI and BSA. The results indicated that the MACI quenched BSA fluorescence through a static mechanism. The interaction possessed a moderate binding affinity with Ka values ranging from 1.27 × 104 to 7.25 × 104 M−1 at different temperatures. Hydrophobic forces and hydrogen bonds were identified as critical factors in stabilizing the complex based on thermodynamic parameters. The local environment of tryptophan residues in BSA was found to be altered following the addition of MACI, as revealed by synchronous and three-dimensional fluorescence spectra. The spectroscopic studies were supported by electrochemical analyses, which indicated the formation of an electro-inactive complex between MACI and BSA. From the molecular docking experiments, the most likely binding site for MACI was found to be site I of BSA. Several hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic contacts were observed during the interaction of MACI with site I of BSA. These findings provided detailed insight to understand the binding properties of MACI to BSA, which may be beneficial for medical and pharmaceutical applications in the future. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Background: Large-scale family pedigrees are commonly used across medical, evolutionary, and forensic genetics. These pedigrees are tools for identifying genetic disorders, tracking evolutionary patterns, and establishing familial relationships via forensic genetic identification. However, there is a lack of software to accurately simulate different pedigree structures along with genomes corresponding to those individuals in a family pedigree. This limits simulation-based evaluations of methods that use pedigrees. Results: We have developed a python command-line-based tool called py_ped_sim that facilitates the simulation of pedigree structures and the genomes of individuals in a pedigree. py_ped_sim represents pedigrees as directed acyclic graphs, enabling conversion between standard pedigree formats and integration with the forward population genetic simulator, SLiM. Notably, py_ped_sim allows the simulation of varying numbers of offspring for a set of parents, with the capacity to shift the distribution of sibship sizes over generations. We additionally add simulations for events of misattributed paternity, which offers a way to simulate half-sibling relationships, and simulations to extend the breadth of a family pedigree. We validated the accuracy of both our genome simulator and pedigree simulator. We show that we can simulate genomes onto family pedigrees with levels of expected kinship. Conclusions: py_ped_sim is a user-friendly and open-source solution for simulating pedigree structures and conducting pedigree genome simulations. It empowers medical, forensic, and evolutionary genetics researchers to gain deeper insights into the dynamics of genetic inheritance and relatedness within families. © The Author(s) 2025.

Advances in genome sequencing technologies generate massive amounts of sequence data that are increasingly analyzed and shared through public repositories. On-demand infrastructure services on cloud computing platforms enable the processing of such large-scale genomic sequence data in distributed processing environments with a significant reduction in analysis time. However, parallel processing on cloud computing platforms presents many challenges to researchers, even skillful bioinformaticians. In particular, it is difficult to design a computing architecture optimized to reduce the cost of computing and disk storage as genomic data analysis pipelines often employ many heterogeneous tools with different resource requirements. To address these issues, we developed GenomeFlow, a tool for automated development of computing architecture and resource optimization on Google Cloud Platform, which allows users to process a large number of samples at minimal cost. We outline multiple use cases of GenomeFlow demonstrating its utility to significantly reduce computing time and cost associated with analyzing genomic and transcriptomic data from hundreds to tens of thousands of samples from several consortia. Here, we describe a step-by-step protocol on how to use GenomeFlow for a common genomic data processing task. We introduce this example protocol geared toward a bioinformatician with little experience in cloud computing. © 2025, CC BY.

Smart-parking solutions use sensors, cameras, and data analysis to improve parking efficiency and reduce traffic congestion. Computer vision-based methods have been used extensively in recent years to tackle the problem of parking lot management, but most of the works assume that the parking spots are manually labeled, impacting the cost and feasibility of deployment. To fill this gap, this work presents an automatic parking space detection method, which receives a sequence of images of a parking lot and returns a list of coordinates identifying the detected parking spaces. The proposed method employs instance segmentation to identify cars and, using vehicle occurrence, generate a heat map of parking spaces. The results using twelve different subsets from the PKLot and CNRPark-EXT parking lot datasets show that the method achieved an AP25 score up to 95.60% and AP50 score up to 79.90%. © 2023 IEEE.

Correct information is a vital resource during disasters. Without adequate information, response actions may be ineffective. What is the source of information of emergency management systems? Besides that originated from sensors, the emergency team and the public in general, a very relevant source is government data, such as demographic and geographic data, road maps, etc. The heterogeneity of information formats is a well-known problem that affects organizations and communities that want to access public data. Today, most public agencies provide access to their data, but the great majority is unreadable by automated mechanisms. Besides, most of them do not provide a dictionary meaning for the published content. A solution to this problem is of particular importance to emergency response organizations that need access to all information available to better respond to disasters and crisis. The linked open data (LOD) initiative allows the interconnection of data, using standards in the context of the semantic web approach. In ideal conditions, government agencies publish their public data, thus allowing the use of automated data concerned consumers, whether they are other government agencies or citizens. Efforts aimed to link government data are growing in several countries around the world. This talk presents the LOD concepts and describes an architecture that uses LOD in the design of an Emergency Management System. It describes a scheme for collecting available data from government agencies, such as departments of health, transport, works, that can supply information needs during an emergency response operation.

Elliptic Curve based El-Gamal (ECEG) cryptosystem is one of many widely used public key cryptosystems that makes use the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem (ECDLP). For breaking ECDLP, Pollard Rho is currently the fastest attack. In this study a hybrid of Elliptic Curve based Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange (ECDHKE) and ECEG, is modified as an attempt to make harder for an attacker to reveal ECEG's private key by executing Pollard Rho attack using information from the public key gained by eavesdropping. This study examine the modified ECEG strength increase and the feasibility for implementing the modified ECEG. © 2012 Infonomics Society.

Hydroponics is a method of growing crops without using soil, with the benefits of controlling the environment and nutrients, conserving water, and reducing labor. The applied technology is used to improve results that have consistency. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the IoT devices and platforms used in the development of IoT-based hydroponics. Data obtained from the website *** and *** from 2016 to 2021. This study is a literature review using the PRISMA method. This method is used for literature review using a systematic and structured basic framework. The results of this study indicate that the variables measured are Temperature, Potential Hydrogen (pH), Total Dissolve Solid, Water Temperature, Humidity, UV, Carbon Dioxide, Soil Moisture and Electrical Conductivity. The device used is the ESP8266, Arduino, and Raspberry PI with the MySQL, Thingspeak, Firebase, Domoticz, and Wyliodrin IoT Platforms. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Organizations frequently need to recall past events that, for some reason, were not adequately documented when they occurred. The successful reconstitution of past events depends on several variables, such as how long ago the event occurred, and whether key people are still in the organization. It also depends on the supporting process. This paper examines three knowledge recall methods and compares them in a controlled experiment. A group storytelling approach is used in two of the methods, one of which is supported by technology. The results obtained favor the group approach, but the advantages of technology support are not conclusive. The paper also evaluates the benefits and the drawbacks of using a supporting technology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Manage the company process faster as possible and in the automated way has been one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. Companies are constantly looking for the improvement of its processes in order to achieve a competitive advantage in the market and the reduction of internal costs. This challenge is particularly strong in government companies providing utility services to the population. The company Cagece (one basic sanitation company of the Brazilian government) know this problem and the difficulties it generated. In this paper, we present in a systematic way, a little about the problem, the suggested solution, and the results collected through the relationship disciplines of Software Engineering and BPM in order to show the innovation applied and to guide companies that search improvements in their processes.
