This paper presents an online method that can accurately estimate the time-varying posture of a moving hose-shaped robot having multiple microphones and loudspeakers. Sound-based posture estimation has been considered to be promising for circumventing the cumulative error problem of conventional integral-type methods using differential information obtained by inertial sensors. Our robot emits a reference signal from a loud-speaker one by one and estimates its posture by measuring the time differences of arrival (TDOAs) at the microphones. To accurately estimate the posture of the robot (the relative positions of the microphones and loudspeakers) even when the robot moves, we propose a novel state-space model that represents the dynamics of not only the posture itself but also its change rate in the state space. This model is used for predicting the current posture by using an unscented Kalman filter. The experiments using a 3m moving hose-shaped robot with eight microphones and seven loudspeakers showed that our method achieved less than 20 cm error at the tip position even after the robot moved over a long time, whereas the estimation error obtained by a conventional integral-type method increased monotonically over time. © 2014 IEEE.

Summary Background Low-risk limits recommended for alcohol consumption vary substantially across different national guidelines. To define thresholds associated with lowest risk for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease, we studied individual-participant data from 599 912 current drinkers without previous cardiovascular *** We did a combined analysis of individual-participant data from three large-scale data sources in 19 high-income countries (the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration, EPIC-CVD, and the UK Biobank). We characterised dose-response associations and calculated hazard ratios (HRs) per 100 g per week of alcohol (12·5 units per week) across 83 prospective studies, adjusting at least for study or centre, age, sex, smoking, and diabetes. To be eligible for the analysis, participants had to have information recorded about their alcohol consumption amount and status (ie, non-drinker vs current drinker), plus age, sex, history of diabetes and smoking status, at least 1 year of follow-up after baseline, and no baseline history of cardiovascular disease. The main analyses focused on current drinkers, whose baseline alcohol consumption was categorised into eight predefined groups according to the amount in grams consumed per week. We assessed alcohol consumption in relation to all-cause mortality, total cardiovascular disease, and several cardiovascular disease subtypes. This paper presents an interactive humanoid robot that can moderate a multi-player fastest-voice-first-type quiz game by leveraging state-of-the-art robot audition techniques such as sound source localization and separation and speech recognition. In this game, a player who says "Yes" first gets a right to answer a question, and players are allowed to barge in a questionary utterance of the quizmaster. The robot needs to identify which player says "Yes" first, even if multiple players respond at almost exactly the same time, and must judge the correctness of the answer given by the player. To enable natural human-robot interaction, we believe that the robot should use its own microphones (i.e., ears) embedded in the head, rather than having pin microphones attached to individual players. In this paper we use a robot audition system called HARK for separating the mixture of audio signals recorded by the ears into multiple source signals (i.e., almost the simultaneous utterances of "Yes" and the questionary utterance) and estimating the direction of each source. To judge the correctness of an answer, we use a speech recognizer called Julius. Experimental results showed that our robot can correctly identify which player spoke first when the players' utterances differed by 60 msec.

This paper presents a robot quizmaster that has auditory functions (i.e., ears) for moderating a multiplayer quiz game. The most basic form of oral interaction in a quiz game is that a quizmaster reads aloud a question, and each player is allowed to answer it whenever the answer comes to his or her mind. A critical problem in such oral interaction is that if multiple players speak almost simultaneously for answering, it is difficult for a “human” quizmaster to recognize overlapping answers and judge the correctness of each answer. To avoid this problem, players have conventionally been required to push a button, raise a hand, or say “Yes” to just get a right to answer a question before doing it. This requirement, however, inhibits natural oral interaction. In this paper we propose a “robot” quizmaster that can identify a player who correctly answers a question first, even when multiple players utter answers almost at the same time. Since our robot uses its own microphones (ears) embedded in the head, individual players are not required to wear small pin microphones close to their mouths. To localize, separate, and recognize overlapping utterances captured by the ears, we use a robot audition software called HARK and an automatic speech recognizer called Julius. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of our approach.

The analysis and design of a resistorless sub-bandgap voltage reference using a Schottky diode instead of a bipolar junction is presented. It is a self-biased circuit and works in the nano-ampere current consumption range at a supply voltage as low as 0.5 V. The design is validated through post-layout simulation results for a 130 nm CMOS technology, including process variability analysis. A voltage reference around 240 mV is achieved for VDD = 1.2V, with a temperature coefficient TC of 43 ppm/°C in the range from -40°C to 120°C and 192 ppm/°C with V DD = 0.5V in the same temperature range. The current consumption is 276 nA for V DD = 1.2V at 27°C, and the silicon area is 0.0016 mm 2 for the entire reference.

This paper addresses the problem of recognizing gestures which are captured using the Kinect sensor in a educational game devoted to the deaf community. Different strategies are evaluated to deal with the problem of having few samples for training. We have experimented a Leave One Out Training and Testing (LOOT) strategy and an HMM-based ensemble of classifiers. A dataset containing 181 videos of gestures related to nine signs commonly used in educational games is introduced, which is available for research purposes. The experimental results have shown that the proposed ensemble-based method is a promising strategy to deal with problems where few training samples are available.

Improvement of IT service processes: a study of critical success factors

Maturity models and Information Technology (IT) service management models guide the definition and improvement of service management processes. Known approaches include ITIL, COBIT, ISO/IEC 20000, CMMI-SVC, and MR-MPS-SV. The implementation of these models results in benefits such as: increased user and customer satisfaction with IT services; financial savings due to less rework and less time used, and improved resource management and usage; improved decision making and optimized risk; and better alignment based on the business focus. However, some organizations find it difficult to use the models. This paper presents a study in which we identified critical factors for success and failure of the improvement of IT service processes. By doing a systematic mapping study and by snowballing, we were able to identify factors such as: project implementation strategy; support, commitment, and involvement; processes; and internal and external resources. Also, we analyzed our results using grounded theory procedures in order to facilitate their understanding.

This paper presents the FOLKUS-SD a module of CSCW-SD, intend to build Folksonomies from source codes. The CSCW-SD is an architecture to integrate tools in a development environment through a Multi-Agent System. The Folksonomies are built using dynamic data collected during codification. The Folksonomies' entities are represented by the module as: the users are the developers, the tags are names of classes, methods and attributes, and the resources are source codes. The Folksonomies can be used for software documentation. The Folksonomies produced by FOLKUS-SD can be used in the software documentation for monitoring the status of some project and to get quantitative data about the project and its participants. © 2014 IEEE.
