Dealing the Selection of Project Management through Hybrid Model of Verbal Decision Analysis

The decision may be defined as a result of a process of choice, given an identified problem or when the decision maker faces an opportunity of creation, optimization or improvement in an environment. Considering that agile methodologies, in focus Framework SCRUM, are always more popular in Development Software Companies, and noticing that the mentioned companies cannot always apply every characteristics of the framework, this paper presents an hybrid application of methodologies from Verbal Decision Analysis (VDA) framework to select some of the SCRUM approaches to be applied in the company, considering the elicitation of preferences of a decision maker. The work intends to provide an evaluation of Project Management approaches applied in the Software Development and examine them toward to identify which are the most preferable ones, aided by the application of a hybrid model of decision making. The hybrid model aims at classifying alternatives using ORCLASS method, through the developed software, and ranking them using a Verbal Decision Analysis method (ZAPROS III-i). Afterward, Specific Practices (SP) of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMi) level 2 were chosen, and approaches to attend the SP's were ranked from the most preferable to the least preferable ones, aiming to help enterprises which are not able to reach a complete CMMi qualification.

The electoral system is vital to the democratic process. Several countries have adopted different mechanisms for the electoral process, from paper ballots to electronic voting machines and online voting. There are several benefits of digital polls conducted over the internet, but it also comes with vulnerabilities and forms of manipulation. With the intention of facilitating the development and validation of online voting systems an object-oriented framework was developed for protocols and online elections, where it is possible to implement and test new protocols without the need to develop an entire system. In recent years, many linked open datasets have been published, enabling data access and interoperability at a new scale. However, reusing rules, queries and processes is still difficult: applications are usually developed from the ground up, reinventing queries, inferences and operations that others might have created before. To address this issue, we introduce reusable inference modules, created following Semantic Web standards, which make it easier to reuse inferences and calculations based on these data. These modules act simultaneously as consumers and publishers, consuming data from one or more sources and publishing results as new, derived datasets. Their internal logic is encapsulated to simplify application development and developers need only configure rules and queries.

The reliability on Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) is critical for the safe operation of many industrial applications. In particular, SIS play an important role in oil and gas processing plants. SIS are responsible not only for the continuous operation of the plant, it also keeps the plant in a safe state, avoiding damages to the environment and minimizing risks to employees. Therefore, the correct behavior of such systems is an important goal to achieve when building industrial plants. Verification and testing of SIS programs is a very hard task to accomplish. This happens mainly for two reasons. First, testing the real system is very expensive and sometimes it may take a huge amount of time, weeks or even months. Second, those systems deal with a huge number of variables. It is not always possible for a human tester to check if all of them are correct when performing tests. Providing an automatic and formal testing approach for such systems is an important contribution for the development of such systems. In this work we introduce a new method for generating test cases for SIS programs running on programable Logic Controller (PLC). As we did on previous work, ISA 5.2 diagrams are used as specification of the systems, but now we are using a hardware-in-the-loop technique, and the target artifact is a software running on a PLC. To avoid the execution of redundant tests, we introduced a new test case generation algorithm that is based on equivalence classes. Finally, we discussed a study case in which our method is used to detect error, that were introduced on purpose, on a simple system. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper we assess the use of textural descriptors for the problem of parking space detection. We focus our experiments on two descriptors (Local Binary Patterns and Local Phase Quantization) that have attracted a great deal of attention because of their outstanding performance in a number of applications. We show through a series of comprehensive experiments that both descriptors are able to achieve very low error rates on a database composed of 105,837 images of parking spaces. We also show that the combination of the diverse classifiers developed in this work can bring further improvement achieving an error rate of 0.16%. The results reached in this work compare favorably to other published methods.

Human communication always used gestures, movements and expressions as oral language support. Certain gestures are so commonly used around the world that are understood throughout different cultures and times, such as a wave or thumbs up. Natural Interaction is a way to apply this concept to user interfaces in computer systems. In this paper we discuss about the use of Natural Interaction features in a telemedicine system. More specifically, we demonstrate the use of natural interaction interfaces for control and manipulation of 3D objects inside Arthron tool. Arthron is a telemedicine tool used for surgery transmissions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

This paper proposes an incremental, structural and contextual validation method for Nested Context Language (NCL) documents. As part of the proposed method, we define a declarative metalanguage to ensure low coupling between NCL structure and the validator code, which simplifies the validation of new language profiles. Requirements such as incremental processing and multilingual messages are also covered by this work. We present an implementation of this method using component architecture as a proof of concept and also conduct a performance evaluation to compare the traditional and incremental validation approaches. © 2013 The Brazilian Computer Society.

In this paper we address the task of hierarchical bird species identification from audio recordings. We evaluate three types of approaches to deal with hierarchical classification problems: the flat classification approach, the local-model per parent node classifier approach and the global-model hierarchical-classification approach. For the flat and local-model classification approach we employ the classic Naive Bayes algorithm. For the global-model approach we use the Global Model Naive Bayes (GMNB) algorithm. As in the classical Naive Bayes, the algorithm computes prior probabilities and likelihoods, but these computations take into account the hierarchical classification scenario: it assumes that any example which belongs to a given class will also belong to all its ancestor classes. In the current application, the employed class hierarchy is the standard scientific taxonomy of birds used in Biology. In order to deal with the bird songs we obtain features by computing several acoustic quantities from intervals of the audio signal. We conduct three experiments in order to compare the three different approaches to the hierarchical bird species identification problem. Our experimental results show that the use of the GMNB hierarchical classification algorithm outperforms both the flat and local-model approaches (Using the Hierarchical F-measure metric);hence the use of a global-model approach (such as the GMNB) can be a feasible way to improve the classification performance for problems with a large number of classes.

Computing systems have been playing an important role in various medical fields, notably in image diagnosis. Studies in the field of Computational Vision aim at developing techniques and systems capable of detecting various illnesses automatically. What has been highlighted among the existing exams that allow diagnosis aid and the application of computing systems in parallel is Computed Tomography (CT). CT enables the visualization of internal organs, such as the lung and its structures. Computational Vision systems extract information from the CT images by segmenting the regions of interest, and then recognize and identify details in those images. This work focuses on the segmentation phase of CT lung images with singularity-based techniques. Among these methods are the region growing (RG) technique and its 3D RG variations and the thresholding technique with multi-thresholding. The 3D RG method is applied to lung segmentation and from the 3D RG segments of the lung hilum, the multi-thresholding can segment the blood vessels, lung emphysema and the bones. The results of lung segmentation in this work were evaluated by two pulmonologists. The results obtained showed that these methods can integrate aid systems for medical diagnosis in the pulmonology field.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY The 13th Annual SIG/USE Research Symposium focused on ways mobile technologies have influenced information needs, seeking and use. In her keynote address, Caroline Haythornthwaite framed movement as changing contributorship, interactions and participation in multiple knowledge communities. A series of Ignite talks on the common theme of mobility followed, with topics ranging from mobile phones as the preferred Internet access device, credibility of mobile applications and online resources and public libraries' use of social media and mobile applications to mobile apps promoting health information literacy and supporting teleworking. Small groups brainstormed on opportunities, challenges and research ideas inspired by the theme. Annual SIG/USE awards recognized scholars for innovative work on topics including refugees' information seeking, factors influencing scholars' data sharing and drawings as visual representations of information. The symposium closed with encouragement to consider how information on the move influences perspectives and research into information behavior.
