Identifying university students’ online academic help-seeking patterns and their role in Internet self-efficacy

The main purposes of this study were, first, to identify Taiwanese university students’ online academic help-seeking (OAHS) patterns and further to compare their Internet self-efficacy (ISE) among the identified patterns. A total of 366 Taiwanese university students were invited to fill out two questionnaires to understand their OAHS and ISE, respectively. The results revealed that three OAHS patterns, adaptive, self-reliant, and socially-affiliated, were characterized based on the cluster analysis. The differences in the students’ various ISE dimensions among the three patterns were then compared. The adaptive students, who commonly adopted all types of OAHS behaviors, tended to be the most efficacious in the seven measured ISE dimensions. The self-reliant students, highlighting that they mainly sought help by searching for relevant information online, showed higher confidence in the ISE dimensions of "Usage," "Application," and "Learning" than did the socially-affiliated students (i.e., those who tended to use formal and informal queries to seek academic help online). The socially-affiliated students only showed higher confidence in sharing online information than the self-reliant students. However, in the "Communication," "Verifying," and "Metacognition" ISE dimensions, there were no significant differences between the socially-affiliated and self-reliant students. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

Stroke is an injury that affects the brain tissue, mainly caused by changes in the blood supply to a particular region of the brain. As consequence, some specific functions related to that affected region can be reduced, decreasing the quality of life of the patient. In this work, we deal with the problem of stroke detection in Computed Tomography (CT) images using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) optimized by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). We considered two different kinds of strokes, ischemic and hemorrhagic, as well as making available a public dataset to foster the research related to stroke detection in the human brain. The dataset comprises three different types of images for each case, i.e., the original CT image, one with the segmented cranium and an additional one with the radiological density's map. The results evidenced that CNN's are suitable to deal with stroke detection, obtaining promising results.

Decision making is sometimes faced with a situation where assessment is given in the form of linguistic variables, which have a certain range of values so that decision making cannot be given in the form of numerical values. One approach commonly used is Hesitant Fuzzy Linguistic Term Sets (HFLTS) which is a multi-criteria and multi-alternative decision making method. In TOPSIS which has the concept of distance measurement, basically the chosen one is the best alternative is an alternative that has the closest distance to a positive solution and the farthest distance with a negative solution. The incorporation of HFLTS-TOPSIS has the advantage that decision making can be done in the form of variable linguistics and also a situation where there are benefit criteria and cost criteria. This study will use the HFLTS-TOPSIS approach that has been modified in the distance calculation section so that distance calculation is based on the difference of preference degree between the two HFLTS. The results of research conducted by a number of researchers show that using pseudo-distance will provide advantages compared to the standard HLFTS-TOPSIS. Pseudo-distance HFLTS-TOPSIS will be applied in the selection of the best lecturers. The criteria used in this study are: Student Satisfaction, Research, Number of late, and number of complaints from students. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Incorporating teacher intelligence into digital games: An expert system-guided self-regulated learning approach to promoting EFL students' performance in digital gaming contexts

In recent years, several studies have reported the potential of employing digital games in EFL (English as Foreign Language) courses to promote students' learning motivation. However, scholars have pointed out that students generally lack self-learning ability, which is the key to the success of learning a foreign language. Therefore, it is crucial to foster students' self-learning ability during the game-based learning process. In this study, an expert system was developed to facilitate self-regulated learning in digital game-based learning contexts. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a quasi-experimental design was employed in a university English course. The experimental group students learned with the self-regulated English vocabulary game (SR-EVG) approach, while the control group students learned with the conventional English vocabulary game (C-EVG) approach. The experimental results indicated that the use of the SR-EVG approach could improve learners' English vocabulary achievement and self-regulation compared with the C-EVG approach without increasing students' English learning anxiety. Moreover, through qualitative interviews, it was found that students who used the SR-EVG approach would focus on their learning due to goal-setting in the game and would pay more attention to the learning strategies they used. Hydroponics is a method of growing crops without using soil, with the benefits of controlling the environment and nutrients, conserving water, and reducing labor. The applied technology is used to improve results that have consistency. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the IoT devices and platforms used in the development of IoT-based hydroponics. Data obtained from the website *** and *** from 2016 to 2021. This study is a literature review using the PRISMA method. This method is used for literature review using a systematic and structured basic framework. The results of this study indicate that the variables measured are Temperature, Potential Hydrogen (pH), Total Dissolve Solid, Water Temperature, Humidity, UV, Carbon Dioxide, Soil Moisture and Electrical Conductivity. The device used is the ESP8266, Arduino, and Raspberry PI with the MySQL, Thingspeak, Firebase, Domoticz, and Wyliodrin IoT Platforms.

Facilitating decision making in authentic contexts: an SVVR-based experiential flipped learning approach for professional training

ABSTRACTFacilitating decision making in authentic contexts is an important educational objective of professional training. To enable learners to have more opportunities to practice in authentic contexts under the guidance of instructors, the flipped learning mode of shifting the lectures to be the pre-class activity with the presentation of digital media has gradually been receiving attention. However, the conventional flipped learning mostly uses videos to present teaching content. In such a learning environment with one-way information and lack of experience, it is not easy for most learners to experience the actual situation encountered in the nursing procedure, which affects their judgment and performance when dealing with actual scenarios. To solve this problem, the present study adopted spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) to provide an experiential learning mode in flipped learning. To verify the effects of this teaching mode, this study conducted an experiment in a blood transfusion safety training course. The experimental group used the SVVR-based experiential flipped learning (SVVR-EFL) mode, while the control group used the conventional flipped learning mode. The results showed that using the SVVR-EFL mode not only enhanced new nursing staff’s learning achievement, but also increased their decision-making performance, meta-cognition tendency, problem-solving tendency and classroom engagement.

How Does the Composition and Configuration of Green Space Influence Urban Noise?: A Systematic Literature Review

The attenuation of anthropogenic noise is an often overlooked benefit of incorporating green space into the urban built environment. High levels of noise exposure pose a significant health risk to urban dwellers, but vegetation can both physically block and absorb noise, as well as lower perceived noise levels. To advance understanding on how green space can be leveraged for reducing urban noise, we conduct a systematic literature review on the composition and configuration of urban green space and its relationship to anthropogenic noise levels in cities. We find that the literature is in agreement that green space composition and configuration contributes to decreased noise levels in a variety of ways: greater total area, larger patches, taller trees, and deeper vertical vegetation were associated with greater noise reductions. Furthermore, clustered sets of green space patches and less compact individual patches were linked with lower noise levels. The review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines and the reviewed articles are summarized in an interactive web-app to make the information accessible to urban policymakers and residents seeking to design green spaces that mitigate the negative impacts of urban environmental noise.

Digital games have been used in various disciplines to enhance students’ learning interest and effectiveness through the gaming contexts. However, most of the digital educational games use multiple-choice questions to confirm students’ learning status, implying the challenge of understanding the actual learning status of students. Also, the gaming system cannot analyze the possible reasons for students’ wrong answers and so provide suggestions. Therefore, this study proposed a two-tier assessment-based contextual gaming (TTA-CG) approach to confirm whether students correctly answer the questions based on the right reasons as well as identifying the reasons for students’ wrong answers. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a quasi-experiment was conducted in a horticulture course. Two classes of first-year vocational high school students were recruited as the participants. One class with 35 students was the experimental group learning with the TTA-CG approach;the other class with 35 students was the control group adopting the conventional contextual gaming (C-CG) approach. The experimental results showed that the TTA-CG approach was more effective than the C-CG approach in terms of enhancing students’ learning achievement, motivation, and self-efficacy. In addition, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of cognitive load. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The resultant force acting on the moving part of the ceramic aerostatic linear bearing is measured highly accurately as the inertial force of the moving part of the bearing by means of the levitation mass method (LMM). The measurement results of the ceramic aerostatic linear bearing and metal aerostatic linear bearing of different mass are compared. The regression equation of the ceramic aerostatic linear bearing and metal aerostatic linear bearing are calculated. Nowadays, messaging technology in digital data form more often used and not less messages that confidentially wanted. Then it should be modified so that can be understood only by the sender and the intended recipients. All of this system can be realization by using cryptography. LUC algorithms are introduced by Smith and Lennon in 1993. LUC algorithm is an algorithm that based on the use of Lucas sequence (specific arithmetic operations derived from Lucas row) that rarely used to enhance the security of the messages. In this research, LUC algorithm is combined with visual cryptography to process the encryption and the description of a colored image. Four different images were used in the trial here. The performance of the system is assessed using Structural similarity (SSIM) which has an assessment similar to human eye. If the image quality is the same as the original image, then the SSIM value is one. Whereas if the quality of decryption image is very different from the original image then the value of SSIM is zero. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
