Background and *** physical therapists depend on their professional journals for high-quality evidence. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rigor of research and review articles in 4 national physical therapy *** and *** articles in 6 consecutive issues of theAustralian Journal of Physiotherapy,Physical Therapy,Physiotherapy, andPhysiotherapy Canada, published between January 2000 and June 2001 (N=179), were reviewed. One trained reviewer identified the type and purpose of each article and assessed the rigor of treatment and review articles according to explicit *** majority of articles reviewed were original studies (56%). The majority of the research articles that dealt with human health care (66%) addressed topics that were not directly applicable to the provision of patient care such as measurement topics and studies on subjects without identified pathologies or impairments. Of the 179 journal articles, 19 met the standards for rigor (11%). The majority of these articles dealt with treatment. The pass rate per journal was as follows:Australian Journal of Physiotherapy, 10% (4/42);Physical Therapy, 15% (7/47);Physiotherapy, 12% (4/34); andPhysiotherapy Canada, 7% (4/56).*** such a small percentage of articles in these professional journals were identified as having direct application to patient care, physical therapists should attempt to access other sources of information to find additional high-quality evidence. A larger sample with a greater number of issues per journal may have yielded different results and indicated different trends, and further research appears to be warranted.

Changes in work and its practice are leading corporations to valorize workers not only for technical competencies but also social ones. This tendency has consequences both for workers who need to improve such competencies (most of the time on the fly), and for students who have to be prepared for such market. The aim of this work is to show how concepts from social learning theory and communities of practice are being used in the design of a learning environment that uses collaborative problem based learning (PBL) and portfolios. The environment encourages social interactions among its users where the development of social competencies is concerned. The work is divided in three parts; the first describes the collaborative learning model, the second describes how implementation evolved and finally considerations of what has been done and what future work is likely to be.

A main issue in collaborative learning is providing support and monitoring both the individual learners and the group activities. In this sense, there is a variety of functions that might be accomplished by a collaborative learning support system. Some examples are: knowledge diagnosis and evaluation, group and individual feedback, student and group modelling, and so on. LeCS (Learning from Case Studies) is a collaborative case study system that provides a set of tools and accomplishes some functions that together support learners during the development of a case study solution. This paper gives an overview of LeCS, focusing on the system design and architecture. The LeCS design is based on our model of supporting the learning from case studies method in a computer-based environment and in a distance learning context. The LeCS architecture is agent-based and includes three kinds of agents. © Springer-Verlag 2002.

This paper presents a collaborative virtual environment for problem solving in civil engineering, which represents a building with problems related to its structural design (e.g., fissures). In this environment the students play the role of civil engineers. They need to detect the structural problems and evaluate their causes in order to be able to solve them. To accomplish this, the students can act upon the structural elements included in the environment (e.g., pillars) or make use of the working tools that are available (e.g., tape measure). This distributed environment allows for the exploration of the possibility of student collaboration in virtual reality. Furthermore, its design intends to provide a way to implement problem solving in collaborative environments in which genuine interdependence occurs i.e. team members must have different knowledge or abilities in order to create genuine collaboration.

This paper reports a model of document retrieval for the Portuguese language, developed from a Miyamoto document-retrieval model. The Miyamoto model is based upon semantic similarity detection of descriptors by co-occurrences. The proposed model may be considered an extension of the Miyamoto model because it considers lexical similarities and expression similarities. Hence, descriptors and queries are expressions, i.e. series of words and connectors (prepositions, etc.). The similarity between words is based on the comparison between possible radicals for the detection of words with identical or similar meanings. The expression similarity is determined by comparing words and connectors using an adaptation of a Bruza and van der Weide (1991) model. The proposed Miyamoto model extension considers both: the determination of a fuzzy thesaurus by a fuzzy index, achieved through lexical descriptor similarities; and the possibility of a non-controlled vocabulary use by the determination of similarities between document descriptors and query expressions. A sample document base was created for the comparison between the models. The results show the usefulness of the proposed model for document retrieval in the Portuguese language.

Mathematical modeling of the dynamic behavior of physical systems, gives computers that mimic the capabilities to intelligently monitor and predict their evolutionary characteristics. In this paper, we present a system for tracking the time-varying features of non-rigid objects in images of evolving scenes, using the elastic string model of planar contours, which permits the inference and prediction of the quantitative parameters that characterize evolutionary behavior. The goal of our work is to dynamically track non-rigid objects in video sequences, using object alignment techniques based on the properties of the elastic string. We present experimental results of growth cone and neurite tracking in cell growth and motion studies.
