In this paper, we present a lightweight Deformable Surface Mechanism (DSM) by applying shape-memory alloy (SMA) and sponge for moving objects as a soft actuator. The SMA is driven by heating and cooling processing with the cur-rent flowing. For the SMA, cooling is a process for recovering to original length which consumes time. In order to decrease the recovering time and making the surface deformable, a sponge sheet is applied in the mechanism. We used the cotton thread to sew the SMA into the sponge to manufacture the mechanism. The DSM contains a multi-triangle structure, and each triangle works as an individual actuation unit. By applying this structure and special sewing technique, the sponge sheet can be deformed in a vertical direction when the SMA contracted. While, when the current is turned off, the SMA can be stretched to the original length by the pushing force generated by the sponge. Therefore, a deformable surface mechanism with a rapid response can be achieved. We simulated the changing of uni-Deformable Surface Mechanism (uniDSM), and the experiments were followed to compare with the analyzed results. Additionally, different objects were examined on the DSM to test the conveyance ability.

Erbium (Er) complexes are used as optical gain material for signal generation in the telecom C-band at 1540 nm, but they need a sensitizer to enhance absorption. Na+ substitution at Ag+ and Bi3+ doping at the In3+ site are possible strategies to enhance broadband emission in Cs2AgInCl6, which could be used as sensitizers to energy transfer into rare-earth elements. Herein, self-trapped exciton (STE) energy transfer to Er3+ at 1540 nm for low loss optical telecommunication applications is reported. An acid precipitation method is used to synthesize Cs2AgInCl6 and its derivative with Er3+, Bi3+, and Na+. Bare Cs2AgInCl6:Er emission signals are found to be weak at 1540 nm, but Bi3+ doping increased by 12 times, and Bi3+ and Na+ doping increased by up to 25 times signal intensity. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy characterized a decrease in axial symmetry over the Er3+ ion after substitutions of Na+ and Bi3+ in Cs2AgInCl6 at low temperature ( © 2022, The Authors. Existing regulatory frameworks for biomedical AI include robustness as a key component but lack detailed implementational guidance. The recent rise of biomedical foundation models creates new hurdles in testing and certification given their broad capabilities and susceptibility to complex distribution shifts. To balance test feasibility and effectiveness, we suggest a priority-based, task-oriented approach to tailor robustness evaluation objectives to a predefined specification. We urge concrete policies to adopt a granular categorization of robustness concepts in the specification. Our approach promotes the standardization of risk assessment and monitoring, which guides technical developments and mitigation efforts. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Fuzzy logic is a control technique commonly applied in mobile robotics. This paper contains the analysis of three implementations of control systems for obstacle avoidance of a mobile robot. The simulation environment simulate situations with both fixed and dynamic obstacles - like people walking - aiming to compare the fuzzy control approach most suitable to avoid different kinds of obstacles. The analyzed approaches differ by segmenting the sensor data (provided by a LiDAR sensor) into three regions, five regions or by considering only the position of the nearest obstacle. The three approaches were tested in scenarios containing different obstacles and in a simulation where the robot delivers to tables in a dynamic environment, simulating a social event as an application example of a waiter robot.

Transmission systems that enable speed, torque, and direction conversion with high responsiveness and back-drivability are strongly required for higher performance robotic systems. Engagement states can be changed by clutches, but traditional clutches cannot change the direction and provide sufficient backdrivability. On the other hand, direction conversion can be realized by gear box such as bevel gears, but its backdrivability is poor. Thus, we newly develop a prototype transmission system with backdrivablity and responsiveness integrating clutch and direction converter using magnetorheological fluid (MRF). MRF is a functional fluid consisted of magnetic particles and carrier fluids which can change its viscosity rapidly and continuously according to the strength of magnetic field. MRF clutch consists of driving and driven shaft connected by vanes and coils for controlling MRF. MRF direction converter consists of bevel gears, brake, and MRF for reversing the output direction. In addition to traditional functions, such as speed and torque conversion, the proposed power transmission system provides five working modes: forward direction, reverse direction, and three kinds of free, according to states of the MRF clutch, MRF direction converter, and brake. Preliminary experiments revealed that the proposed transmission system could adequately realize implemented functions.

The interplay between thermodynamics and information theory has a long history, but its quantitative manifestations are still being explored. We import tools from expected utility theory from economics into stochastic thermodynamics. We prove that, in a process obeying Crooks’s fluctuation relations, every α Rényi divergence between the forward process and its reverse has the operational meaning of the “certainty equivalent” of dissipated work (or, more generally, of entropy production) for a player with risk aversion r=α−1. The two known cases α=1 and α=∞ are recovered and receive the new interpretation of being associated with a risk-neutral and an extreme risk-averse player, respectively. Among the new results, the condition for α=0 describes the behavior of a risk-seeking player willing to bet on the transient violations of the second law. Our approach further leads to a generalized Jarzynski equality, and generalizes to a broader class of statistical divergences.

Although conventional service providers are independent from each other when attending most of the population, demanded services are changing along with the social structure. Especially in the case of Taiwan, the number of co-working families has been increasing, and self-employed households occupy a large proportion of all working forms. Due to their diverse lifestyles and work styles, services that are suitable for personal objectives and that optimize the use of time are required. To meet this demand, it is important to connect people and city facilities to make it easier to provide suitable services. Based on those backgrounds, an innovated personal service platform in Taiwan is proposed, focusing on three factors, including time, place and personal information to connect people and city service facilities. Among various kinds of services, we targets services purchased in cities such as sales, mobility services, health services, government services and so on. It aims to link these services flexibly and dynamically to achieve personal objectives according to each situation. And, it can provide suitable services for a variety of every-day living situations. With this system, people can increase satisfaction and free time, improving life quality while making the economy more dynamic.

The elderly population has been increased due better health conditions and quality of life. With a healthier aging, the elderly start to have a more active and participative life in society. They pursue, among other things, to acquire new knowledge and despite being a generation which access to existing technology was restricted, there is an increase in the use of digital technologies, especially in the educational field. However, with advancing age, cognitive and motor skills decrease. Given this scenario, the creation of accessible didactic materials that include the elderly population is necessary. This paper shows a framework to create inclusive digital material for elderly learning. The framework will help teachers to create digital contents that support elderly learners' personalized educational goals. © 2020 AISTI.

Oxygen Availability Control and Monitoring System in Hospitals using IoT

Medical Gas is an important component in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 disease. Medical gas is used to help COVID-19 patients to reduce the effects of respiratory disorders by providing oxygen ventilators to patients. With the surge in typical COVID-19 sufferers as of July 2021, the need for Oxygen in hospitals is getting higher. This is when the control and monitoring of medical gases in hospitals are late because the integrated system is very dangerous. Therefore, a system that can be used to control and monitor medical gases in hospitals that are integrated and automated and can be monitored by the Government and Medical Gas Producers. This is useful for anticipating the lack of availability of Medical Gas in hospitals. In this study, the system used IoT systems as a base in delivery and control. This system uses Arduino as a minimum system that reads the press sensor on the Medical Gas tube and regulates the valve. The data obtained is then sent to the Local Server to be processed and delivered to the Hospital Officer. Local Servers also send the data to cloud servers to be monitored by the government funds of several medical gas producers. This design can help in the process of controlling and monitoring Medical Gases in hospitals in hopes of minimizing the risk of delays in supplying medical gases to hospitals.

2CA-R2: A Hybrid MAC Protocol for Machine-Type Communications

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications are becoming the most important factor shaping network traffic. However, traditional controls developed for human-generated traffic are not able to cope with new demands. Thus, hybrid MAC protocols have been proposed to make use of the combined advantages of contention and reservation. Most of them are based on a contention stage (where a variant of CSMA/CA or ALOHA is used) followed by a reservation stage (e.g., TDMA or FDMA). In this paper, we introduce 2CA-R, a hybrid MAC protocol for M2M communications intended to be used in the device domain. What distinguishes this proposal is that the contention stage is controlled by a conflict-resolution algorithm known as Adaptive-2C. The protocol was evaluated using a model based on a Markov chain and computer simulations. Its performance was compared with DCF, the MAC technique used in IEEE802.11 standards. Our results show significant improvements over DCF in various metrics of network performance across different traffic situations. We also evaluated the time the protocol takes to resolve an access conflict, and we observed substantial improvements in the number of stations that can be served with the same network resource (in some cases, around a 40% improvement).
