This paper presents a systematic mapping study on factors that affect motivation in computing undergraduate students. Although there are several initiatives to improve teaching and learning computing, the panorama is still negative. Motivation and engagement are usually singled out as reasons for students' retention or success, but we found a lack of standards in studies on motivation of computing students, and we have not found literature reviews about this subject. We identified twenty-nine (29) motivation factors presented in 32 selected studies. We divided the factors into five categories: student, professor/teaching, program/course/content, environment/university, and social aspects. The most mentioned factor was related to the teaching-learning strategies (37.5%), professor-student interaction (31.3%) and prior knowledge (31.3%). We also have identified that there is no convergence on literature about the identification and measurement of motivation and engagement. Another interesting aspect was that, despite the literature saying that intrinsic motivation has a greater impact on the student's results, many studies are being carried out considering extrinsic aspects. This shows the concern of the computing community regarding these aspects. However, there are only a few studies with controlled studies and evaluations on the impact of the factors in the motivation of students. © 2018 IEEE.

OBJECTIVE:Although unhealthy diets exacerbate nutritional and metabolic derangements in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), how therapeutic diets that possess a variety of different dietary strategies acutely modify diverse biochemical parameters related to cardiovascular disease remains underexplored. METHODS:Thirty-three adults with end-stage kidney disease undergoing thrice-weekly hemodialysis participated in a randomized crossover trial comparing a therapeutic diet with their usual diets for 7 days, separated by a 4-week washout period. The therapeutic diet was characterized by adequate calorie and protein amounts, natural food ingredients with a low phosphorus-to-protein ratio, higher portions of plant-based food, and high fiber content. The primary outcome measure was the mean difference in the change-from-baseline intact fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) level between the 2 diets. The other outcomes of interest included changes in mineral parameters, uremic toxins, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels. RESULTS:Compared with the usual diet, the therapeutic diet lowered intact FGF23 levels (P = .001), decreased serum phosphate levels (P < .001), reduced intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels (P = .003), lowered C-terminal FGF23 levels (P = .03), increased serum calcium levels (P = .01), and tended to lower total indoxyl sulfate levels (P = .07) but had no significant effect on hs-CRP levels. Among these changes, reduction in serum phosphate level achieved in 2 days, modifications of intact PTH and calcium levels in 5 days, and reductions in intact and C-terminal FGF23 levels in 7 days of therapeutic diet intervention. CONCLUSION:Within the 1-week intervention period, the dialysis-specific therapeutic diet rapidly reversed mineral abnormalities and tended to decrease total indoxyl sulfate levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis but had no effect on inflammation. This article describes the instructional design and evaluation of a course about project management in a software engineering post-graduation program using different teaching approaches and with a focus on active learning. We use four different approaches: digital educational game, non-digital educational game, hands-on activity, and experiential activity. Each one of the activities is evaluated for the aspects of motivation, user experience, and learning, following the MEEGA evaluation model and Cidral's experiential activity model. To verify the perceptions of students over time, we also assess graduated students that have concluded this course after two to four years, considering the aspects of motivation and learning. Results indicate a high level of approval for dynamic activities, regarding both motivation and learning. Activities with greater impact on motivation and learning are dynamics and educational games, group practical activities, and group theoretical activities. Among the factors that most influence students' motivation, we highlight: active learning, teacher knowledge, the taste of the area, and teaching methods. We realized that there was no significant variation in the perception of the activities by students over time. © 2018 IEEE.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next-generation gamma-ray observatory that is expected to reach one order of magnitude better sensitivity than that of current telescope arrays. The Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs) have an essential role in extending the energy range down to 20 GeV. The prototype LST (LST-1) proposed for CTA was built in La Palma, the northern site of CTA, in 2018. LST-1 is currently in its commissioning phase and moving towards scientific observations. The LST-1 camera consists of 1855 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) which are sensitive to Cherenkov light. PMT signals are recorded as waveforms sampled at 1 GHz rate with Domino Ring Sampler version 4 (DRS4) chips. Fast sampling is essential to achieve a low energy threshold by minimizing the integration of background light from the night sky. Absolute charge calibration can be performed by the so-called F-factor method, which allows calibration constants to be monitored even during observations. A calibration pipeline of the camera readout has been developed as part of the LST analysis chain. The pipeline performs DRS4 pedestal and timing corrections, as well as the extraction and calibration of charge and time of pulses for subsequent higher-level analysis. The performance of each calibration step is examined, and especially charge and time resolution of the camera readout are evaluated and compared to CTA requirements. We report on the current status of the calibration pipeline, including the performance of each step through to signal reconstruction, and the consistency with Monte Carlo simulations. © 2022 Sissa Medialab Srl. Background: Pruritus is the most common initial symptom reported by patients with dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM). However, there is limited data regarding the impact of pruritus on cancer and mortality in patients with DM and PM. In this study, we aimed to investigate how pruritus is associated with cancer and mortality in patients with DM and PM. Methods: This nationwide, population-based retrospective cohort study included adult DM and PM patients from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database between 2005 and 2022. Sex- and age-matched pruritic patients, identified by over 6 weeks of antipruritic medication use, and nonpruritic patients were analyzed. The primary outcome was cancer occurrence or all-cause mortality. The association between pruritus and these outcomes was estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Among 919 matched pairs of pruritic and nonpruritic patients, cancer was observed in 19.96% in the long-term pruritic group (LPG), 14.63% in the short-term pruritic group (SPG), and 10.34% in the non-pruritic group (NPG) ( p < 0.0001). All-cause mortality was documented as 30.37% in the LPG, 29.69% in the SPG, and 37.76% in the NPG ( p < 0.0001). After adjusting for sex, age, and other comorbidities, pruritus was associated with an increased risk of cancer (hazard ratio (HR) 1.708, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.229–2.374) and a lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR 0.483, 95% CI 0.409–0.569). Conclusion: This population-based study revealed that pruritus appeared to be associated with increased risks of cancer and decreased all-cause mortality. Thus, pruritus may serve as a pragmatic factor for risk stratification and tailored treatment strategies in DM and PM. Cancer screening, particularly for nasopharyngeal and breast cancers in East Asian populations, is recommended for patients with DM or PM, especially those presenting with pruritus. Modern companies usually work with a lot of projects. Defining an order of execution for such projects is of paramount importance for the day to day life of such companies. For this, it is necessary to identify the prioritization criteria conveniently. Verbal Decision Analysis is a framework that contains several multi-criteria methods for classification and ordering of alternatives, among them the ZAPROS III-i method. This paper reports the use of the ZAPROS III-i method for the prioritization of a project portfolio of a governmental organization. The method was appropriate for the application scenario, providing satisfactory results according to the analysis performed. © 2018 AISTI.

Scholars have indicated the importance of providing guidance and support for individual learners. In the past decades, most studies have developed adaptive learning systems to address this issue mainly based on students’ cognitive status, such as their learning achievements. However, several educators have pointed out the need to take learners’ affective status into account. Therefore, this study proposed an expert system approach by taking into account both the affective and cognitive status of individual learners. An adaptive learning system was implemented based on the proposed approach. In addition, an experiment was conducted in a fifth-grade Mathematics course to compare the learning performances and perceptions of the students who learned with the adaptive learning system with affective and cognitive status analysis, a cognitive-status-based adaptive learning system, and a conventional learning system. The ANCOVA results revealed that the adaptive learning model with the affective and cognitive performance analysis mechanism outperformed the other two approaches in terms of improving the students’ learning achievement (F = 3.12, p © 2020 The Author(s)

BACKGROUND:Lytic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection plays a major role in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). For patients with recurrent or metastatic NPC and resistant to conventional therapies, adoptive cell therapy using EBV-specific cytotoxic T cells (EBV-CTLs) is a promising option. However, the long production period (around 3 to 4 weeks) and low EBV-CTL purity (approximately 40% of total CD8 T cells) in the cell product limits the application of EBV-CTLs in clinics. Thus, this study aimed to establish a protocol for the rapid production of EBV-CTLs. METHODS:By culturing peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from EBV-seropositive donors with EBV-specific peptides and interleukin (IL)-2, IL-15, and interferon α (IFN-α) for 9 days, we identified that IL-15 can enhance IL-2-mediated CTL activation and significantly increase the yield of CTLs. RESULTS:When IFN-α was used in IL-2/IL-15-mediated CTL production from days 0 to 6, the productivity of EBV-CTLs and EBV-specific cytotoxicity significantly were reinforced relative to EBV-CTLs from IL-2/IL-15 treatment. Additionally, IFN-α-induced production improvement of virus-specific CTLs was not only the case for EBV-CTLs but also for cytomegalovirus-specific CTLs. CONCLUSION:We established a novel protocol to rapidly expand highly pure EBV-CTLs from PBMCs, which can produce EBV-CTLs in 9 days and does not require feeder cells during cultivation.

There are several ways to deal with security issues of confidential data sent via the internet, including using cryptographic techniques and steganography. Steganography is the science and art of concealing information / messages in a media in such a way that its existence is not detected by other parties who are not entitled to the information. Instead, cryptography disguises the meaning of a message, but does not hide that there is a message because the file looks suspicious. The Steganography technique used here was End Of File (EOF). The EOF technique described how to add data or files at the end of the image file. For this technique, the size of data or files that will be hidden could be larger than the size of the image file. The hidden data will be inserted at the end of the file so that it will not affect the image. This steganography application is also equipped with a cryptographic function Data Encryption Standard (DES) at the time of insertion of data that functions as a generator code and encrypts data, so that the security of a data in the file is more protected and protected from those who are not entitled to know the data. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
