This empirical study involved volunteers who played a game featuring NPCs specially developed for the research. The research investigated the influence and behaviour of NPC appearance on some factors regarding the players. Results suggest that NPC appearance can significantly affect the player's emotions, immersion, perception, and decision-making. Poorly dressed NPCs negatively influenced the player's emotional state, while well-dressed NPCs generated higher trustworthiness and positively influenced the player's decision-making. This study may help develop more efficient strategies for creating characters that influence the player's decision-making in video games and encourage the development of new research in the field of human-agent interaction and game development. © 2023 IEEE.

Breast cancer is an occurrence of cancer that attacks breast tissue and is the most common cancer among women worldwide, affecting one in eight women. In this modern world, breast cancer image classification simplifies the process of analyzing, providing objective and accurate results. By leveraging machine learning algorithms and computer vision techniques, we developed breast cancer detection. The dataset is histopathology dataset from BreakHis and UNHAS Hospital. We chose the ConvNeXt-Tiny model then modified the classifier head as the proposed method. Before the dataset is processed by the model, we augment the images by applying random horizontal and vertical flips, adjustments to brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue using color jitter. The augmentation process simulates real-world variance and enhances the model's ability to generalize to unseen data. Our proposed model gained better performance (accuracy, F1-Score) results compared two other techniques to VGG16 and SVM. According to our experiments, the F1-Score for the ConvNeXt-Tiny model with classifier head modification is higher at 0.9516, than the gain for VGG16 at 0.9292, and the gain for the SVM at 0.83. © 2024 IEEE.

This study investigates the impact of class balancing and regularization on improving the diagnostic agreement in prostate histological images. The U-Net models applied to the Prostate Cancer Grade Assessment dataset reveal that class balancing combined with traditional loss functions contributes to an increase of up to 6 percentage points in image agreement. Combining balancing and Focal Loss can increase image classification agreement by an average of 13 percentage points compared to using an imbalanced dataset with traditional loss functions. Notably, distinguishing between Gleason patterns 3 and 4 in medical image analysis is crucial, as this distinction not only directly influences clinical decisions and the prognosis of prostate cancer patients but also emphasizes the need for careful interpretation of the data. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Speed Bump Detection Through Inertial Sensors and Deep Learning in a Multi-contextual Analysis

Speed bumps are vertical raisings of the road pavement used to force drivers to slow down to ensure greater safety in traffic. However, these obstacles have disadvantages in terms of efficiency and safety, where the presence of speed bumps can affect travel time and fuel consumption, cause traffic jams, delay emergency vehicles, and cause vehicle damage or accidents when not properly signaled. Due to these factors, the availability of geolocation information for these obstacles can benefit several applications in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles, allowing to trace more efficient routes or alert the driver of the presence of the obstacle ahead. Speed bump detection applications described in the literature employ cameras or inertial sensors, represented by accelerometers and gyroscopes. While camera-based solutions are mature with evaluation in different contextual conditions, those based on inertial sensors do not offer multi-contextual analyses, being mostly simple applications of proof of concept, not applicable in real-world scenarios. For this reason, in this work, we propose the development of a reliable speed bump detection model based on inertial sensors, capable of operating reliably in contextual variations: different vehicles, driving styles, and environments in which vehicles can travel to. For the model development and validation, we collect nine datasets with contextual variations, using three different vehicles, with three different drivers, in three different environments, in which there are three different surface types, in addition to variations in conservation state and the presence of obstacles and anomalies. The speed bumps are present in two different pavement types, asphalt and cobblestone. This study evaluates an agent-based reinforcement learning framework for model-based testing (MBT). The framework’s performance was assessed on three key metrics: effectiveness and efficiency in achieving model coverage objectives, the quantity and uniqueness of generated test cases, and code coverage. The results show improved metrics for the framework compared to traditional testers in model coverage evaluation and test case metrics. Specifically, the framework achieved higher effectiveness and efficiency, generating a higher average number of test cases with a substantial proportion of unique cases, indicating more diverse and thorough testing. Additionally, the framework, along with random and greedy testers, achieved over 70% coverage across branch, method, and line code metrics. The framework showed slightly higher values in method and line coverage compared to other testers. The evaluation highlights the use of agent-based reinforcement learning to support model-based testing in planning test case generation, exploring models using multiple strategies, and learning guided by testing metrics. Future work will focus on further refining the framework learning model, including error coverage evaluation, and testing its applicability across different software systems.

In this study, two deep learning models for automatic tattoo detection were analyzed; a modified Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and pre-trained ResNet-50 model. In order to achieve this, ResNet-50 uses transfer learning with fine-tuning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and computational efficiency of the system being considered. To augment the dataset included 1000 photos that were equally divided between those showing tattoos and those that did not show tattoos. A k-fold cross-validation approach was employed in training and testing the models. Although custom CNNs are effective, utilizing pre-trained ones like ResNet-50 can offer even better outcomes. Specifically, ResNet-50 attained a higher accuracy (0.86 compared to 0.79), precision (0.85 versus 0.78), recall (0.91 against 0.86), and F1-score (0.91 vis-a-vis 0.86) as compared to custom CNNs. In selecting these models for examination, two main motivations were considered. The first motivation is to see whether transfer learning with a pre-trained ResNet-50 model does well when compared with a customized CNN designed specifically for tattoo detection. Secondly,the intent of this study is to know what advantages can be derived from each approach and their demerits too. Furthermore, it seeks to determine if transfer learning can provide an alternative in contrast to the common CNN techniques with regards to precision and computational efficiency. In this research, two models will be evaluated in order to answer the question of what is better for tattoo detection: transfer learning or designing custom architectures.

This study introduces the system submitted to the SemEval 2022 Task 11: MultiCoNER (Multilingual Complex Named Entity Recognition) by the UC3M-PUCPR team. We proposed an ensemble of transformer-based models for entity recognition in cross-domain texts. Our deep learning method benefits from the transformer architecture, which adopts the attention mechanism to handle the long-range dependencies of the input text. Also, the ensemble approach for named entity recognition (NER) improved the results over baselines based on individual models on two of the three tracks we participated in. The ensemble model for the code-mixed task achieves an overall performance of 76.36% F1-score, a 2.85 percentage point increase upon our individually best model for this task, XLM-RoBERTa-large (73.51%), outperforming the baseline provided for the shared task by 18.26 points. Our preliminary results suggest that contextualized language models ensembles can, even if modestly, improve the results in extracting information from unstructured data. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.

We investigate the implementation of triple modular redundancy (TMR) with different number of voters in a softcore RISC-V microprocessor to mitigate radiation-induced faults in the configuration memory (CRAM) of SRAM-based FPGA. The case-study microprocessor is the Steel Core implemented in AMD Xilinx 7-Series/Zynq-7000 device, executing benchmark software on the FreeRTOS operating system. We implemented coarse-grained TMR (CGTMR) and fine-grained distributed TMR (FGDTMR) using an automated redundancy and voter insertion tool. TMR is used in combination with memory scrubber featured by the FPGA hardware, which uses error correction codes (ECC) to revert radiation-induced faults in CRAM. Fault injection in CRAM emulating radiation-induced faults is used to evaluate the benefits of both TMR and ECC. Under fault injection, combining the fault masking capability of TMR with the self-healing by ECC, improved mean time between failures (MTBF) up to 5×. ECC alone did not improve significantly the fault tolerance. Without ECC, FGDTMR improves MTBF in 2×, but at a higher cost in circuit area and resources usage. When combined with ECC, the CGTMR provides fault tolerance comparable to FGDTMR but with 30% less resources usage.

Kidney stones are primarily crystals formed from ion oversaturation in urine. Currently, the diagnosis of kidney stones involves experienced professionals manually interpreting images of urinary crystals under a microscope. In recent years, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), many researchers have proposed various methods to assist in diagnosis, hoping to improve medical quality. This study explored the application of AI in the medical field, aiming to automate the interpretation of urinary crystal images, such as red blood corpuscles (RBCs), calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM), calcium oxalate dihydrate octahedron (COD-OCT), calcium oxalate dihydrate dodecahedron (COD-DOD), debris, and others, and to use image processing techniques to classify urinary crystal types. This research is expected to assist medical personnel in quickly determining the categories of urinary crystals. Ultimately, our model achieved an F1-score of 0.93, indicating that this architecture has significant potential. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

Method for improvement of transparency: Use of text mining techniques for reclassification of governmental expenditures records in Brazil

Many countries have transparency laws requiring availability of data. However, often data is available but not transparent. We present the Transparency Portal of Brazilian Federal Government case and discuss limitations of public acquisitions data stored in free text format. We employed text-mining techniques to reclassify descriptive texts of measurement units related to products and services. The solution presented in KNIME and Java aggregated measurements in the original (n = 69,372 with 78% reduction in number of descriptions, 94% items classified) and in cross validation sample (n = 105,266 with 88% reduction, classifying 78% of items). In addition, we tested computational time for processing of texts for a wide range of data input sizes, suggesting the stability and scalability of the solution to process larger datasets. Finally, we produced analysis identifying probable input errors, suppliers and purchasing units with abnormal transactions and factors affecting procurement prices.
