Data generated across time may not be easily comparable in its original form thus potentially leading to results that may be perceived as unfair to some. We investigate quality assessment of scholarly researchers from their curricula vitae (CVs) for processes such as hiring, promotion, and grant funding. In previous work, we demonstrated that case-based reasoning (CBR) offers advantages as a transparent methodology to assess researcher quality. Its benefits include consistency, transparency, ability to adapt to specific purposes, and ability to provide explanation. The problem we now face is how to preprocess the data from the CVs to compare researchers whose scholarly production is achieved under different conditions, different points in time, and span different career trajectory lengths. We propose strategies to deal with these aspects of time during preprocessing of the data for case representation. We use 1,000 CVs from the Brazilian Lattes database to illustrate. The Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 was associated with a bright, millisecond-timescale fast radio burst (FRB) which occured in April 2020, during a flaring episode. This was the first time an FRB was unequivocally associated with a Galactic source, and the first FRB for which the nature of the emitting source was identified. Moreover, it was the first FRB with a counterpart at another wavelength correlated in time, an atypical, hard X-ray burst, which provides clear evidence for accompanying non-thermal processes. The MAGIC Telescopes are Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) sensitive to very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma rays. Located at the center of the camera lies the MAGIC Central pixel, a single fully-modified photosensor-toreadout chain to measure millisecond-duration optical signals, displaying a maximum sensitivity at a wavelength of 350 nm. This allows MAGIC to operate simultaneously both as a VHE gammaray and a fast optical telescope. The MAGIC telescopes have monitored SGR 1935+2154 in a multiwavelength campaign involving X-ray, radio and optical facilities. In this contribution, we will show the results on the search for the VHE counterpart of the first SGR-FRB source in this multiwavelength context, as well as the search for fast optical bursts with the MAGIC Central Pixel. © 2021 Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Starting from the first announcement of unequivocal detection of very high energy (VHE) emission from a gamma-ray burst (GRB) by the MAGIC telescopes (GRB 190114C), four additional detections of VHE emission from GRBs by ground-based telescopes were reported. These observations have revealed a new, energetic component that has become an additional probe to explore GRB physics. In order to deepen our understanding of the origin of this new component, and in general of the origin of radiation from GRBs, further observations by VHE instruments are crucial. In this work we report fast follow-up observations by the MAGIC telescopes of GRB 201015A, a GRB detected by the Swift/BAT. As measured by BAT, the prompt emission lasted 9.8 ± 3.5 seconds, suggesting that this GRB belongs to the class of long events. This was later confirmed by optical observations, which allowed to measure the redshift (z = 0.42) and found the associated type Ic-BL supernova. Having a prompt isotropic-equivalent energy of Eiso ∼1050 erg, this GRB is a relatively low energy event as compared to the population of long GRBs. Observations with the MAGIC telescopes started about 30 seconds after the GRB onset and were performed under good observational conditions. The accurate analysis of the MAGIC data reveals a strong hint of detection and implies a significant energy release in the TeV range, smaller but comparable with that of the prompt emission in the keV-MeV band. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)

The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart AT2017gfo and the GRB 170817A, associated to the binary neutron star merger GW170817, was one of the major advances in the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the hallmark of the multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. Another breakthrough in GRB physics is represented by the discovery of the highly energetic, teraelectronvolt (TeV) component in the GRB 190114C, possibly an universal component in all GRBs. This conclusion is also suggested by the hint of TeV emission in the short GRB 160821B and a few more events reported in the literature. The missing observational piece is the joint detection of TeV emission and gravitational waves from a short GRB and its progenitor. MAGIC observed the counterpart AT2017gfo as soon as the visibility conditions allowed it, namely from January to June 2018. These observations correspond to the maximum flux level observed in the radio and X-ray bands. We report the discovery and characterization of a small planet, TOI-1408 c, on a 2.2-day orbit located interior to a previously known hot Jupiter, TOI-1408 b (P=4.42 d, M=1.86±0.02MJup, R=2.4± 0.5RJup) that exhibits grazing transits. The two planets are near 2:1 period commensurability, resulting in significant transit timing variations (TTVs) for both planets and transit duration variations (TDVs) for the inner planet. The TTV amplitude for TOI-1408 c is 15% of the planet’s orbital period, marking the largest TTV amplitude relative to the orbital period measured to date. Photodynamical modeling of ground-based radial velocity (RV) observations and transit light curves obtained with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and ground-based facilities leads to an inner planet radius of 2.22 ±0.06R☉ and mass of 7.6 ±0.2M☉ that locates the planet into the Sub-Neptune regime. The proximity to the 2:1 period commensurability leads to the libration of the resonant argument of the inner planet. The RV measurements support the existence of a third body with an orbital period of several thousand days. This discovery places the system among the rare systems featuring a hot Jupiter accompanied by an inner low-mass planet. © 2024, CC BY.

Augmented Reality is a technology that allows users to see the real world, with virtual objects placed on it or combined with the real world. Augmented Reality itself can be applied to various things, including as an educational media. In the field of education, technology can be used a culture introduction to society. One part of Indonesian culture is traditional houses. Traditional house is a building that symbolizes the culture of the local community. In North Sumatra itself, there are several traditional houses that have different forms. The use of Vuforia SDK in the construction of this application can display augmented objects in the form of 3-dimentional objects and also provide information on the house. This application will run on the Android mobile platform to make it easier for users to access it. In addition, users can choose their own objects to be used as markers to make the application use much easier.

The prediction of scholarship recipients in higher education using k-Nearest neighbor algorithm

This article aims to implement the algorithm model of k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) in analyzing, predicting, and classifying students who have potentials to get scholarships in universities. The k-NN algorithm works by making a prediction based on the closest data points between the old data history as training data and the new data as testing data. The data collected totals 1018 students with 24 scholarship receiver candidate students are used as the dataset for the test purposes. The attributes used in the prediction process are a semester, parents' income, number of family dependents, and Cumulative Grade Point Average. The distance calculation of the value from testing attribute to each training attribute uses Euclidean Distance equation, while the test of the model accuracy value is calculated using Confusion Matrix. The results of the simulation of the prediction model show that the determining factor of training data from both the number and the variation of different values can improve the performance of the k-NN algorithm with the best accuracy rate of 95.83 percent in predicting students who have the greatest chance of getting the scholarship.

Keccak Hash Function is the winner of SHA3 competition. Hash function collision has become one of the fundamental problem in Keccak Hash Function. One of the attack which is based on collision has been proposed by Plasencia, ***. They proposed the practical analysis of reduced round Keccak Hash Function, such that the collision will be found in the second round of Keccak-224. For preventing Keccak Hash Function against Plasencia attack, denying collision in the second round is necessary. Denying the collision of Keccak Hash Function has become one challenge. Since the attacker used free bit for finding the collision, then for preventing against the attack the free bit camouflaging should be conducted. Therefore, for denying the collision in the second round of Keccak Hash Function, free bit camouflaging is proposed. Free bits are used to find the original message that is caused by the collision. For denying the collision, the proposed method modifies the input message by using reverse interleaving scheme. This scheme introduces inverse double mirror image sequence of a message to prevent the attacker in obtaining the original free bits. Based on the experiment, it has been proven that using reverse interleaving, the attacker obtained the camouflaged free bit instead of the original one. The camouflaged free bit will increase the difficulty for finding the collision such that the collision could not be found in the second round. This condition will prevent the attacker for finding the original message. The larger the difference would increase the complexity of attack on Keccak Hash Function in obtaining the original message.
