The regulations of Formula SAE® competitions restrain design, tuning, and improvement on engine in order to keep safety on driving. The competitors have basically chosen a 600 cc, 4-stroke engine for motorcycle according to the regulations. Therefore, it is necessary for higher engine performance to improve combustion by investigation of air intake and exhaust component design while the regulation agreement is the most important factor. Recently, many competitors have been using a high performance Engine Control Unit (ECU) easy to suitably control the engine combustion. The competitors can focus on optimization of the intake and exhaust components using ECU. Best tuning of each component is very difficult work because the design factors of these components have complicated relations with engine performance. Here, our interest is a method to reduce the optimization time of the system. In this paper, we propose the design method of engine intake and exhaust system for a Formula SAE® competition vehicle using some numerical simulation methods. The motivation of this research is to compute internal perspective of humans through external observation. In this paper, we propose method for analyzing neural information through motion measurement. The method is on the bases of the anatomy and physiology of somatic and spinal nervous system. Muscles are classified by the innervated nerves originate from the spinal cord. The somatotopic organization inside the ventral horn of the spinal cord is utilized for topological structure of the spinal neural information. Time series of images which represent distribution of somatic information inside the spinal cord were successfully obtained through measurement and computation for sword swinging 'kesagiri' motion. The coordination of the motion at spinal level was analyzed. The proposed method provides fundamental for motor learning support system.

Active learning enables learners to actively engage in learning. Learning not only transfers material to students for learning, but also encourages greater mental engagement and more extensive student-student and student-instructor interaction than does a typical lecture class. Peer Instruction (PI) engages students in active learning by achieving continuous instructor-student interaction in a physics lecture. However, the methodologies and the effectiveness of implementing PI for elementary school students have seldom been clarified. This study explores the possibility of adopting PI in an elementary science classroom. The research considerations of the study are as follows: (1) how wireless technology can enhance PI in elementary science classroom;(2) how a teacher can engage students in pre-class reading, and (3) whether elementary school students have sufficient social skills to perform a PI discussion? These questions are examined by observing how the PI pedagogical model worked with a wireless response system in elementary science classroom. Based on the observation, this study also proposes a way of improving the PI learning experience of elementary school students by adding experiments and observations during peer discussion to explain concepts and phenomena in physics. © 2005 IEEE.

Digital Humanities (DH) and Digital Library (DL) projects are complex systems that require specialized programming skills. Many encoders cannot take their work to the next level by transforming their collections of structured XML texts into a web searchable and browsable database. Often teams of text encoders are able to encode their texts with a high degree of sophistication, but unless they have funds to hire a programmer, their collections far too often remain on local disk storage away from public access. aims to relieve some of this burden by providing the tools to manage an extensible, modular and configurable XML-based repository which will house, search, browse, and display documents encoded in TEI-Lite on the world wide web. provides an administrative interface that allows DL and DH administrators to upload and delete documents from a web accessible repository;analyze XML documents to determine elements for searching and browsing;refine ontology development;select inter and intra document links;partition the repository into collections;create backups;generate search, browse, and display pages;customize the interface;and associate XSL transformation scripts and CSS stylesheets to obtain different target outputs (HTML, PDF, etc.). © The Author. An emergency response activity usually involves several teams from different organizations working cooperatively for the purpose of saving lives or properties. These teams have to make many decisions under time pressure to accomplish their goals. Most decisions require contextual knowledge coming from the emergency settings, including those which report the activities of other emergency teams. The goal of this paper is to describe a system which aims at storing and disseminating the contextual knowledge required by teams during the course of an emergency.

This paper describes an online 3D reconstruction system from stereo image sequences to obtain a dense local world model for robot navigation. The proposed method consists of three components: 1) stereo depth map calculation, 2) correspondence calculation in time sequential images by tracking raw image features, 3) 6DOF camera motion estimation by RANSAC and integrate depth map into 3D reconstructed model. We examined and evaluated our method in a motion capture environment for comparison. Finally experimental results of a humanoid robot H7 are denoted.

Currently, risk to privacy on the Internet poses a serious problem. So various personal information is treated online. This problem is also prevalent in distance learning systems since the existing privacy function is not sufficient to ensure safety. In this paper, we propose an architecture for privacy after considering a learner's communication for distance learning. We define privacy as a guaranteed learning method wherein a learner's information is treated as confidential. We have implemented the prototype and performed several experiments. We report the results in this paper.

We review the evidence from a number of surveys in which our NetLab has been involved about the extent to which the Internet is transforming or enhancing community. The studies show that the Internet is used for connectivity locally as well as globally, although the nature of its use varies in different countries. Internet use is adding on to other forms of communication, rather than replacing them. Internet use is reinforcing the pre-existing turn to societies in the developed world that are organized around networked individualism rather than group or local solidarities. The result has important implications for civic involvement.
