Incorporating teacher intelligence into digital games: An expert system-guided self-regulated learning approach to promoting EFL students' performance in digital gaming contexts

In recent years, several studies have reported the potential of employing digital games in EFL (English as Foreign Language) courses to promote students' learning motivation. However, scholars have pointed out that students generally lack self-learning ability, which is the key to the success of learning a foreign language. Therefore, it is crucial to foster students' self-learning ability during the game-based learning process. In this study, an expert system was developed to facilitate self-regulated learning in digital game-based learning contexts. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a quasi-experimental design was employed in a university English course. The experimental group students learned with the self-regulated English vocabulary game (SR-EVG) approach, while the control group students learned with the conventional English vocabulary game (C-EVG) approach. The experimental results indicated that the use of the SR-EVG approach could improve learners' English vocabulary achievement and self-regulation compared with the C-EVG approach without increasing students' English learning anxiety. Moreover, through qualitative interviews, it was found that students who used the SR-EVG approach would focus on their learning due to goal-setting in the game and would pay more attention to the learning strategies they used. This research is ongoing research into the student learning process which aims to develop artificial intelligence-based technology to calculate essay exam scores automatically, based on the textual proximity of students' answers to the answer key. This research uses an approach based on natural language processing (NLP) and text analysis. Feature extraction was carried out using the BERT model and similarity comparison using the Cosine distance method. Model evaluation was carried out using sensitivity and specificity tests. The model evaluation results show a sensitivity of 98.21%, which means this assessment model is able to detect positive cases well. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACTFacilitating decision making in authentic contexts is an important educational objective of professional training. To enable learners to have more opportunities to practice in authentic contexts under the guidance of instructors, the flipped learning mode of shifting the lectures to be the pre-class activity with the presentation of digital media has gradually been receiving attention. However, the conventional flipped learning mostly uses videos to present teaching content. In such a learning environment with one-way information and lack of experience, it is not easy for most learners to experience the actual situation encountered in the nursing procedure, which affects their judgment and performance when dealing with actual scenarios. To solve this problem, the present study adopted spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) to provide an experiential learning mode in flipped learning. To verify the effects of this teaching mode, this study conducted an experiment in a blood transfusion safety training course. The experimental group used the SVVR-based experiential flipped learning (SVVR-EFL) mode, while the control group used the conventional flipped learning mode. The results showed that using the SVVR-EFL mode not only enhanced new nursing staff’s learning achievement, but also increased their decision-making performance, meta-cognition tendency, problem-solving tendency and classroom engagement.

While several content management systems (CMS) and audience analytics tools are available for digital signage in the market, they are often sold separately and can be expensive. Therefore, this project aims to design a cost-effective and unified web-based solution for digital signage that combines content management and audience analytics functions, reducing the need for multiple purchases. This can be achieved by utilizing Raspberry Pi technology, known for its cost-effectiveness and versatility in integrations, along with a face recognition camera and machine learning methods. This proof of concept demonstrates the integration of these components to create a dynamic digital signage system. Overall, this project has the potential to offer an affordable solution for companies aiming to efficiently manage and optimize their digital marketing strategies, especially in the Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) Advertising space.

Our research specifies the criteria for categorizing comments and supplements the limitations of the existing services that filter out only some of the direct malicious comments centered on specific vocabulary and phrases. In comparison to prior research detecting three sentiments as positive, negative, or neutral, we subdivided expressions into six categories. Our model applying classification downstream tasks to a pre-trained KcBERT model draws results reflecting the meaning and social context of the comments. An improved accuracy compared to previous studies shows a meaningful outcome. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of poor mental health and its association with loneliness and social support among 3531 undergraduate students in nine Asian countries. Mental health was assessed using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire, which was developed by the World Health Organization. Across the entire sample, we detected that nearly half of the students reported poor mental health according to the Self-Reporting Questionnaire and nearly one out of seven students felt lonely. While feeling lonely increased the odds of experiencing poor mental health (odds ratio [OR]), moderate (OR: 0.35) and strong social support (OR: 0.18) decreases the odds of experiencing poor mental health. The high prevalence of poor mental health calls for further in-depth investigations and implementation of mental health support interventions. © 2023 APJPH.

Due to the issue of population aging faced by Taiwan, the government is implementing policies on encouraging the elderly to engage in social activities in their life after retirement, so as to enable them to enjoy a contented and happy retirement life and further forget their ages. In the population aging society, the elderly have an increasingly greater demand for ecotourism. Therefore, in this study, by taking ecotourism as an example, a research on the engagement of the elderly in technology enhanced interactive scenarios of ecotourism was conducted. Purpose of this study was mainly to propose the design system of technology enhanced interactive scenarios suitable for experience of the elderly. In this study, experience demands of the elderly were understood through relevant literature review, preliminary survey and field survey. Subsequently, design concepts of interactive scenarios were proposed through Scenario Approach and a prototype of interactive scenario was designed through Rapid Prototyping Method. Research results: a total of 8 concepts of interactive scenarios were proposed in this study through demand investigation, including provision of experience information, voice guide experience, enhancement of experience fun, trigger of experience scenario, enhancement of intellectual fun, basic knowledge query, enhancement of sensory experience, and sharing and memory. At last, the prototype of "i-Travel" interactive experience scenario was proposed through Prototyping Method. The interactive system consists of 8 interactive scenario concepts, experience contents and navigation design, design of scenario navigation APP, etc. Results of this study will be applied for subsequent assessment and validation of scenario experience awareness of this system. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Global aging is an important issue for global development. Elderly people should not be the burden of individual families, but the assets of the entire society. With the help of life stories or past events that elderly people often repeat, we can better understand the importance of certain things. Therefore, life review is a normal and necessary process that can help the elderly to review past experience with a rational attitude, help them to find the meaning of life, and see the essence of their life. The interviews in this study used Nvivo qualitative software to record and analyze the life stories of 4 elderly people in southern Taiwan, in order to understand the important memories and emotions in their lives, discover the background factors of elderly people recalling their life, and maintain precious human stories for families and society via recording and saving. Guiding the elderly to review their lives through nostalgic narrative has the function of storied therapy, and its values include: personal self-identification, rebuilding the integrity of life through memories, and helping the elderly to reposition themselves in a lonely life through their past experience. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
