Manufacturing has evolved over the past few centuries, both in technological and managerial terms;for the latter, Lean Manufacturing (LM) has been widely used to maximize value for customers and minimize waste. The broad use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in manufacturing forms the concept of Industry 4.0 (I4.0), connecting physical and digital systems and integrating value chains. Although with different approaches, LM and I4.0 share the same goals of increasing flexibility and productivity. In fact, two views on their interaction can be extracted from literature: LM serves as a basis for I4.0 and I4.0 improves LM effectiveness. The novelties presented by I4.0 comprise not only the technical scope, but also the behavioral one. It has been unclear, however, how I4.0 affects LM soft practices, especially when it comes to the skills required for Lean professionals to face this new environment. In this regard, this paper addresses the impact of I4.0 on the skills of Lean professionals. One could observe that in addition to technical skills linked to programming and data science, analytical and interpersonal skills make up the sociocultural skills necessary for the professional of the future in the context of I4.0. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) frequently face class imbalance issues, especially in heterogeneous graphs. Existing GNNs often assume balanced class sizes, which isn’t true in many cases. Applying them directly to imbalanced data can lead to sub-optimal performance. Traditional oversampling methods, while effective, risk overfitting and face difficulties in reintegrating synthetic samples into the original graph. In this study, we introduce Framework of Imbalanced Node Classification on heterogeneous graph neural network with GAN (FincGAN), a new framework that utilizes oversampling techniques to address class imbalance in heterogeneous graphs. Instead of duplicating existing samples, FincGAN employs a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to create synthetic samples and uses deep learning-based edge generators to connect them back to the original graph. Our evaluations on spam user detection in the Amazon and Yelp Review datasets show that FincGAN outperforms baseline models in all essential metrics, including F-score and AUC-PRC score, showing its effectiveness in addressing class imbalance.

Melanoma is the most lethal skin malignancy. Fucoxanthin is a marine carotenoid with significant anticancer activities. Intriguingly, Fucoxanthin's impact on human melanoma remains elusive. Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) represents a promising target in cancer therapy due to its persistent activation in various cancers, including melanoma. Herein, we revealed that Fucoxanthin is cytotoxic to human melanoma cell lines A2758 and A375 while showing limited cytotoxicity to normal human melanocytes. Apoptosis is a primary reason for Fucoxanthin's melanoma cytotoxicity, as the pan-caspase inhibitor z-VAD-fmk drastically abrogated Fucoxanthin-elicited clonogenicity blockage. Besides, Fucoxanthin downregulated tyrosine 705-phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3 (Y705)), either inherently present in melanoma cells or inducible by interleukin 6 (IL-6) stimulation. Notably, ectopic expression of STAT3-C, a dominant-active STAT3 mutant, abolished Fucoxanthin-elicited melanoma cell apoptosis and clonogenicity inhibition, supporting the pivotal role of STAT3 blockage in Fucoxanthin's melanoma cytotoxicity. Moreover, Fucoxanthin lowered BCL-xL levels by blocking STAT3 activation, while ectopic BCL-xL expression rescued melanoma cells from Fucoxanthin-induced killing. Lastly, Fucoxanthin was found to diminish the levels of JAK2 with dual phosphorylation at tyrosine residues 1007 and 1008 in melanoma cells, suggesting that Fucoxanthin impairs STAT3 signaling by blocking JAK2 activation. Collectively, we present the first evidence that Fucoxanthin is cytotoxic selectively against human melanoma cells while sparing normal melanocytes. Mechanistically, Fucoxanthin targets the JAK2/STAT3/BCL-xL antiapoptotic axis to provoke melanoma cell death. This discovery implicates the potential application of Fucoxanthin as a chemopreventive or therapeutic strategy for melanoma management. © 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Assessing the digital maturity of micro and small enterprises: a focus on an emerging market

Digital transformation is challenging the competitiveness of micro and small enterprises (MSEs), especially in emerging markets where factors that inhibit the growth of these businesses traditionally prevail. This paper aimed to assess the digital maturity of MSEs, using the Brazilian context as a study model. A validated digital transformation framework was applied to 346 companies for data collection and subsequent statistical treatment. Almost 60% of the Brazilian MSEs are at primary levels of digital maturity, with 19.1% being unconscious about the digitization process. Digital maturity was shown to be statistically correlated with innovations (p = 0.000) and business revenue (p = 0.009), suggesting that these factors are facilitators in the MSEs digitization. This paper pointed to the urgency of efforts on the part of companies and policy makers in Brazil to implement actions that can foster behaviors, capabilities, and enablers to digital transformation. These findings can allow in-depth discussions and aligned strategies among emerging economies to point out best practices for companies inserted in markets with similar characteristics and challenges.

Lung cancer remains a significant global public health concern, being the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Despite recent medical advancements, the disease still has a high mortality rate, making early detection and treatment critical for improving patient outcomes. Accurate prediction of nodule growth is key to early lung cancer treatment, but current assessments offer unclear indications of future growth, leading physicians to recommend costly and anxiety-provoking follow-up appointments every 3 to 12 months. To address this need, this study develops an ensemble deep learning approach that combines demographic data with existing CT images to predict whether lung nodules will grow, potentially reducing unnecessary examinations and easing the burden on patients. Our study, conducted on 862 patients with 1004 nodules, produced promising preliminary results with Accuracy, Sensitivity, Precision, F1 Score, and AUC of 0.66, 0.66, 0.67, 0.66, and 0.71, respectively. The proposed method provides a promising support system to empower patients to make informed decisions about seeking medical attention and helps physicians facilitate early treatment regimens, leading to improved patient outcomes and potentially saving lives. © 2023 ACM.

Benefits of a failure friendly culture, e.g., learning from failure, are widely known in occupational settings. Validated scales have been developed to measure organizational failure culture and individuals' mind-sets on failure. While research on learning from failure exists in secondary education, scales for higher education are lacking. To support both higher education engineering instructors and students, this contribution aims to develop a Culture of Failure Scale to assess students' and lecturers' handling of failures in engineering higher education settings. This data-driven approach helps inform instructors about aspects of educational settings that are safe and conducive to learning and supports their students to develop a mind-set where failures are seen as a source for improvements and learning. Exemplary application of the developed scale is shown by assessing the failure culture in different groupings, e.g., gender, between two participating German and US institutions.

A clearer understanding of research streams and players involved in efforts to address the sustainability of global food and agricultural systems is needed to clarify the current state of scientific knowledge and form collaborations to pursue future research directions. This study presents new insights into this issue through a scientometric process involving a case study of technologies for extending fruit shelf-life. The text mining software was utilized to analyze 3,131 Web of Science-indexed articles published between 2000 and 2020 as a means to glean the conceptual structure of current knowledge and conduct a social network analysis to explore scientific and publication activity. The findings were mapped onto a strategic diagram of research productivity and collaboration between players at the national, organizational, and individual levels. This research's main findings highlight that research on shelf-life technology is in continuous development, and academic institutions from China, Spain, and the U.S. are the core national players in this field. The results provide insights for further investigation to strengthen co-research and technological development programs in other fields. Researchers who are exploring networking opportunities can use the model and process presented as a guideline for identifying emerging and future research trends and formulating strategies. © 2022 Jakkrit Thavorn et al.

The agile manifesto and the agile-stage-gate model has been introduced as a product development process, widely used among many large well-established firms, and showed positive effects on those firms. However, less attention has been paid to whether or not this way of thinking and methodological processes can be fully applied to specific settings like medical startups. Some challenges such as implementation, resource allocation, working procedures, and organizational transformation could be different in shapes and forms and in intensity vis-à-vis medical startups. The study aims to cope with this deficiency by, firstly, reviewing previous empirical studies that presented process models, challenges, and positive effects of the agile manifesto and the agile-stage-gate model on well-established firms. Secondly, to investigate the agile application in startup settings, the researchers conducted a longitudinal case study by drawing on a successful medical product startup in Thailand that has engaged in the actual implementation of the agile manifesto and agile-stage-gate model in its product development. Thirdly, the study compared the results of implementing the agile in large firms and the medical startup case in this study to investigate similarities and differences in terms of challenges and effects. The study showed both correlations in the same and contrasting directions of the previous studies and the case study's results. The findings of this study can be created and categorized into four aspects of applying the agile-stage-gate in a startup, including balance transformation, work process, person-job fit, and team collaboration. Additionally, the study revealed the relationship among these four aspects, which together form an agile model for medical startups that balance between the long-term objectives and short-term goals, the adaptability and predictability, and the flexibility and rigidity of the set objectives. © 2020 IEEE.

Digital transformation plays a big role in many industries, including construction. One of the obstacles to manage large-scale and complex construction projects is inefficient communication between involving personnel. Most problems are such as misunderstanding contexts, incomplete information, ignorance, missing multimedia files, etc. In Thailand, organizations adopt digital transformation by utilizing a variety of applications and software to complete their projects, such as LINE, G-Suite, Asana, etc. Users have to spend a lot of time to learn each application and software to be able to achieve maximum performance. Construction process quality control assisted application is the new tool developed for uniting all needs and solving communication problems. Requirements are gathered by five interviews with three major organizations, the Thailand Department of Highway, Team Built Co., Ltd., and one major construction company. Requirements were analyzed to extract the most useful features that are beneficial to all users. React Native and the Expo framework were used to develop the frontend part of the application. For the backend part, the application used microservice architecture with various cloud services, like Amazon AWS, Expo Server, and Firebase Cloud Messaging. In the end, the application was put through hand-on tests by 13 on-site personnel. The final results showed the average scores of the user interface, hands-on experience, and benefits for the users were 4, 4.16, and 3.92 (out of 5), respectively, in which the total satisfaction score is 4.03(out of 5). © 2021 IEEE.

Today’s pluralistic and globalized society requires a global perspective in how we think, view ourselves, and relate to others to collaborate successfully with people with different cultural backgrounds. To support the development of a global perspective, universities cultivate international co-operations to enable international mobility for students, faculty, and staff. However, in-person mobility can be inhibited due to various reasons. To support a wider pool of students gaining international experience, modern digital mediated course formats can be used to offer virtual instead of in-person mobility. This contribution evaluates a digital mediated course for mechanical engineering students (Global engineering, GE) held in co-operation between an US and a Portuguese university, where internationally mixed student groups working on design projects in an Hyflex setting. Asides a literature driven discussion about the need for Global Engineers and a detailed description of the GE course, a longitudinal analysis was performed to assess the impact of the GE course on the students’ development of a global perspective. The longitudinal analysis showed strong statistical support that the digitally mediated GE course improved the participating students’ global perspective, assessed with the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI), tremendously. The observed improvements were in three of the six GPI dimensions comparable to an in-person semester abroad. Limitations of the study and future investigations are discussed.
