Mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous. However, very little research has been carried out on the use, benefits or barriers of this technology by people with Intellectual Disabilities (ID), either in an educational or social context. This paper explores self-reported constraints upon usage of smartphones by ID in a study conducted in the UK (with 59 participants) and replicated in a smaller scale in Brazil (23). The studies explored these issues via in-depth group and individual interview and observation. In both countries, similar 'self-imposed' barriers were elicited, with different emphasis. The categories 'reluctance to reveal oneself online' and 'concerns about factors beyond one's control' (viruses, unreliable hardware) were more evident in UK participant comments. Factors in the category 'burden of responsibility', specifically fear of assault were emphasized by Brazilians. Constraints imposed by supporters, in both groups, included prohibitions, restrictions and usage monitoring, especially with regard to social media. These constraints were justified as being to protect the individuals. External barriers such as usability issues, cost management were mentioned by both groups. Overall, use of the technology by this cohort can be seen as a tension between enablement and control, with emphases on different aspects of these forces related to the social conditions prevailing in each country. Since the nineties, Data Mining (DM) has shown to be a privileged partner in business by providing the organizations a rich set of tools to extract novel and useful knowledge from databases. In this paper, a DM application in the highly competitive market of educational services is presented. A model was built by combining a set of classifiers into a committee machine to predict the likelihood that a student who completed his/her second term will remain in the institution until *** model was applied to undergraduate student records in a higher education institution in Brasília, the capital of Brazil, and has shown to be predictive for evasion in a high accuracy. The unbiased selection of students with elevated evasion risk affords the institution the opportunity to devise mitigation strategies and preempt a decision by the student to evade. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

The 2011 flood in Thailand exposed significant vulnerabilities in industrial areas, highlighting the necessity for enhanced disaster risk management through Area-Business Continuity management (Area-BCM). This preliminary study focuses on identifying how stakeholders rely on information from each other to improve disaster preparedness and response. The research involves systematically identifying Area-BCM stakeholders and designing interview questions, which are evaluated by experts using the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) to ensure relevance and clarity. All interview questions surpassed the IOC threshold of 0.5, confirming their effectiveness in capturing information interdependencies. Expert feedback led to refinements in the questions, underscoring the importance of tailored data collection. This initial plan provides a critical foundation for understanding information interdependence and highlights the importance of well-designed data collection methods. The findings have significant implications for developing more resilient disaster management strategies in industrial areas, emphasizing the need for precise and relevant stakeholder communication to enhance Area-BCM effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

Web sites have the potential of playing a major role in the exchange of technology related information between federal laboratories and commercializers in the private sector. Most, if not all, Web site designs are developed based on the organization's perception of what the target audience wants from a Web site. This contribution addresses the issue of successful Web site design from the user's perspective in the context of technology transfer. The orientation takes into account important concepts and principles such as cost, marketing, diffusion, information retrieval, and strategic networking. The results of a survey of private sector technology transfer professionals offer insights to meet the target audience's needs, thus making a Web site a timely and cost-effective electronic linkage for interaction, information-seeking, and networking functions that enable technology transfer.

Dynamic Terrain Data Exchange in a Collaborative Terrain Editor

In a computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), data consistency between collaborating users is a crucial issue. Based on the type of the application, ensuring data consistency can be a lengthy process that takes time and affects the system’s performance. In most 3D application, terrain data are massive due to its size. Exchanging this data may be expensive and may cause significant delay. In a real-time collaborative terrain editor, this issue becomes more significant due to terrain data exchange is consistently occurred between collaborating users. We present a solution to perform a conflict-free dynamic terrain data exchange in a real-time collaborative terrain editor. Our objective is to develop a method that able to ensure data consistency amongst collaborating peers in real-time manner. The main idea of our method is to split the terrain into smaller patches and synchronize the changes efficiently by only exchanging the modified patches. We applied our solution to a collaborative terrain editor application to test its performance in a real-time collaborative editing session. The tests were done in multiple scenarios, using different patch model, brush size (in the terrain editor), and connection setup between server and collaborating clients. The result shows that our protocol is capable to maintain data consistency between collaborating clients in a real-time terrain edition session. The delay is varied and highly depends on the data size and client-server environment setup. The overall test shows that it is possible to perform a collaborative terrain editing with an acceptable response time delay. In this paper, we present our proposed method, the implementation, and the result data from the test. © 2022 Slovene Society Informatika. All rights reserved.

The motion of charged particles along multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) can induce electromagnetic modes. This wake effect represents an innovative approach for short-wavelength, high-gradient particle acceleration and for producing brilliant radiation sources. This article examines the excitation of wakefields produced by a point-like charge moving parallel to MWCNTs using the linearized hydrodynamic theory. General expressions for the excited longitudinal and transverse wakefields and the stopping power have been derived, relating them to the resonant wavenumbers obtainable from the dispersion relations under the assumption of negligible friction. As the number of walls in MWCNTs increases, they exhibit a richer spectrum of plasmonic excitations, which has been widely studied as a function of the driver velocity in this manuscript. This comprehensive study provides a deeper understanding of the physical phenomena behind plasmonic excitations in MWCNTs, paving the way for potential applications in particle acceleration, nanotechnology, and materials science. © 2025 The Author(s). Since networks have progressed remarkably, there is countless information available on the World Wide Web. Generally, this information is formatted as an HTML document. Hence, this paper provides a data concealment scheme for HTML documents based on color code. Our proposed scheme not only avoids increasing the cover file size but also prevents the steganalytic techniques to detect. In addition, the extraction secret data will be meaningless without the assistance of secret key provided. © 2009 IEEE.

The goal of this paper is to show a study to evaluate the possibility of using ontologies to support maintenance procedures in IT equipment in a small power company. The aim is to improve the degree of reliability in detection of potential failures and defects in maintenance processes of information technology critical assets, trying to obtain less downtime of services that they provide. The methodological procedures used in this study were literature review, to present the modeling concepts of knowledge focused on ontologies creation and state of the art in building of field procedures describing the steps from initial drafting of ontology finishing with their tests. The results demonstrate that it is viable to utilize this technique, where the network equipment that keeps critical services require high level of availability on meeting the needs of the corporation.

eLearning has been utilized as a mode of instruction among medical students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of eLearning platforms in medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines by employing the latent variables of UTAUT2, along with two additional latent variables gathered from various related literature. A sum of 360 medical students participated and answered an online survey that consists of 40 questions. A stepwise multiple linear regression was utilized and found that performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC), can successfully predict the actual use (AU) of medical students with a precision of 54.22%. A higher performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC) can enhance and promote the acceptance of medical eLearning platforms. This is the first study that has examined the acceptance of eLearning platforms among medical students in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of this research can serve as guidelines for the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines for the enhancement of eLearning platforms. Although this study only utilized the latent variables of UTAUT2 along with two additional variables: Learning Value and Instructor Characteristics;the findings of this study would still hold significant value for promoting open innovation in eLearning platforms in medical fields worldwide. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).
