Effect of bovine colostrum on the growth inhibition and differentiation of human leukemic U937 cells

BACKGROUND: Colostrum is the breast milk of female mammals produced within in a short time after giving birth. It is thought to protect neonates from infection as well as to facilitate immune system maturation. In this study the effect of bovine colostrum on the proliferation and differentiation of human leukemic U937 cells was investigated to understand more about its immunomodulatory activity. RESULTS: Human mononuclear cells (MNCs) were stimulated with bovine colostrum (CS) and then filtered to obtain a conditioned medium (CM) (CS-MNC-CM). CS-MNC-CMs prepared with day 1 to day 4 colostrums inhibited U937 cells by 39.4-64.4%. The expressions of surface markers CD11b and CD14 on U937 cells in the treated groups were 30.6-33.5% and 40.0-42.6% respectively. High levels of cytokines IL-1β, IFN-γ and TNF-α were detected in CS-MNC-CMs. CONCLUSION: Evidence indicates that colostrums stimulate human MNCs to secrete cytokines IL-1β, IFN-γ and TNF-α which subsequently inhibit the growth of U937 cells and induce their differentiation into mature monocytes and macrophages. There is a possibility for bovine colostrum to be processed into an anti-leukemia ingredient for use in health foods. © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main factors involved in pollution control and global warming in industrialized nations. Various treatment methods involving incineration, adsorption, etc., were employed to reduce VOCs concentration. Various absorbents, such as activated carbon, zeolite, silica gel or alumina, and so on were broadly used to adsorb VOCs in various industrial applications. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was handled to analyze the thermal characteristics of absorbents. Typically, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to evaluate the structure variation of absorbents under high temperature situations. In view of pollution control and loss prevention, versatility and analysis of recycled adsorbents are necessary and useful for various industrial applications. © 2009 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

In petrochemistry, dicumyl peroxide (DCPO) is used in various resins for improving physical properties, which was produced by cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) with oxidization reaction, redox reaction, and dehydration reaction. The reactant, CHP, is a typical organic hydroperoxide and has been intrinsically unstable and reactive due to its bivalent -O-O- structure which can be broken readily with bond-dissociation energy. This sequence on sensitive study aimed at the thermal hazard evaluation for the reactive and incompatible characteristics of CHP mixed with various inorganic alkaline solutions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and vent sizing package 2 (VSP2) were used to analyze the thermal hazards and runaway reaction of redox system, such as decomposition of CHP in cumene solution and CHP react with inorganic alkaline solutions, exothermic onset temperature, peak power, heat of decomposition of dynamic scanning tests, adiabatic self-heating rate, pressure rise rate, maximum temperature, maximum pressure of reaction system, etc. The results of the tests have proven helpful in establishing safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal guidelines. © 2009 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.

Our final goal is to utilise a cognition viewpoint for the engineering of a better design of human communication tools. In this paper, we extend the concept of affordance to cover human-to-human communication and propose the novel concept of 'human affordance', which is afforded from humans, not artefacts. As one possible utilisation of the concept, we introduce the example of affordance in evaluating the strength of agreement/disagreement phrases. In text-based communication, it is important for mutual understanding to effectively afford information about how a person feels about the text itself. This paper presents experimental results on over/underestimation in understanding the strength of agreement/disagreement in text-based communication. The human affordance identified in typical agreement/disagreement phrases is analysed in order to explore how to better augment human affordance in text-based communication. In this paper new segmentation techniques based on region growing algorithm are proposed and tested by using images from different sources. Seed regions are an important step in region growing algorithm, many of region growing algorithms are identified either manually or by automatically. The results showed the automatically identification of the seed regions is the best and give more accurate results than manually identification. The Canny edge detection is used to identify the edge regions, and Symlet wavelet family gave the suitable results to identify edges based on two-dimensional wavelet transform. The enhancement step is necessary to group the values of neighboring pixels together. The results have been shown that the enhancement step using Gaussian filter reduced each of the number of the seed regions and the number of the colored regions. The Gaussian filter based on the value of the standard deviation, the results showed the suitable value of the standard deviation was (1) and may be set between (1) and (3.5), more than this range the image will be degraded.

The paper presents the Personal E-learning System (PES) that is using the semantic web technology. The system interface enables the students to sign in the courses depends on the department plan, the computer science department plan was taken as a case study. The plan represents the courses and their relationships such as the prerequisite courses. The student can download the material of the courses, where the material of the courses presented in different multimedia sources, such as power point, video, and .pdf files. The student can also take the examination online. The instructor can sign in to upload and modify or delete some material from the course. The admin manager of the system can update and make necessary modifications to the department plan and to the rules of study through the PES system. The PES system was based on semantic web technology to represent the description, contents, concepts, entities and relationship between the courses of study.

Under the considerations for the rapid development in leisure tourism and the demand increase for resort hotels, most enterprises will meet a pressure of drastic competition. Therefore, they will intend to build a unique brand in the mind of consumers and to enhance competitiveness and increase their profits. In this study, we will address the issue on the position of brand equity and key factors of competition for the resort hotels. The questionnaire method will be applied to collect the data and the resort hotels in Kenting area will be taken as an illustrative example in our study. The primary findings of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. Customers will have a higher degree of recognition for the environmental quality, local quality and uniqueness brand to the resort Hotels in Kernting area. 2. According to the brand equity diagram derived by using the multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) to those tourists at kernting area, we can find out that those resort hotels can be clustered into four clusters. 3. The brand equity model can be constructed well via using the conventional discriminant analysis and the backpropagation neural network technique. And, the full model and the reduced model can be also constructed after screening the important factors. From above findings, it can provide the useful reference about the marketing strategy and differentiation competition for the resort hotels in Kenting area. It will aid the competition analysis since the enterprise would like to realize their position on the competition environment via the brand equity cognitions.

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks are communication networks built up of a collection of mobile devices which can communicate through wireless connections. Mobile Ad Hoc Networks have many challenges such as routing, which is the task of directing data packets from a source node to a given destination. This task is particularly hard in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: due to the mobility of the network elements and the lack of central control, robustness and adaptability in routing algorithms and work in a decentralized and self organizing way. Through the principles of systems architecting and engineering, the problem statement in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks could be defined more specifically and accurately. The uncertainties and techniques for mitigating and even taking positive advantages of them can be achieved through a framework of uncertainties as in [1]. The systems methodology framework called Total Systems Intervention (TSI) described by Flood and Jackson [2] select a systems methodology for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. The purpose of this paper is to show how TSl when integrated with a framework created to understand the risks and opportunities can help develop strategies to minimize the risks and to take advantage of the opportunities for facing challenges in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. ©2008 IEEE.
