Abalone utilizes a system of macromolecular matrices and soluble proteins to produce beautiful and mechanically robust shells. The cover shows work by Qiu and co‐workers reported on p. 2678, in which AP8 proteins isolated from the shell of red abalone are shown to alter the growth of calcite both by accelerating the rate and modifying the shape from the simple rhombohedra seen in the upper left of the scheme to the more complex form seem in the lower right. The changes are made manifest at an atomic scale through alterations in the growth speed and shape of the atomic steps that form the growth hillocks (background).

The micropatterning of rat primary hepatocyte hetero-spheroids was prepared on microfabricated glass substrates coated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) brushes. Co-cultivation of hepatocytes and endothelial cells was used to stabilize hepatocyte viability and liver-specific functions. Rat primary hepatocytes, suspended in a culture medium, were applied to the patterned dishes with cultured endothelial cells selectively located in the circular domains. Rat primary hepatocytes formed spheroids within 24-h only on the circular regions of existing endothelial cells, generating a two-dimensional (2D)-arrayed structure of the hepatocyte spheroids.

The micro-patterned poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) brush surface for controlling protein and cell interactions was constructed. PEGylated substrates with two-dimensional arrays of plasma-etched circular domains were prepared by coating of mercapto-functionalized (PEG) on Au surface, followed by plasma-etching through a metal mask pattern with circular holes. The micro-patterning of bovine articular chondrocytes or rat primary hepatocytes hetero-spheroids underlaid with human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) was achieved. These arrayed spheroids are promising materials for tissue and cell-based biosensors (TBB and CBB) as well as tissue engineering technologies.

The specific sensing of antigen-antibody interaction was examined by using a PEGylated sensor. For the surface modification, acetal-PEG-SH was prepared and by using acetal-PEG-SH, PEG brush was constructed on the gold sensor chip surface. Modification of antibody was carried out by conjugation of SH group in Fab' to the maleimide group at the distal end of PEG chains on the surface. The result shows that the suitable modification of antibody on the PEG brush surface is very important to obtain high sensing character.

The improved synthesis of poly(α,β-malic acid) (PMA) by direct polycondensation with high yield and increased molecular weight, was analyzed. To determine the chemical structure of the products, the 1NMR and 13C NMR spectra were also measured by an IR spectrometer. It was observed that the polymerization reaction proceeded faster at 130°C, but the molecular weight increased to about 3,500. The results show that the equilibrium of polymerization may shift toward the depolymerization at a higher reaction temperature, exhibiting a decrease in maximum molecular weight of α,β-PMA with an increase in the reaction temperature.
