Given a black box oracle that evaluates a univariate polynomial p(x) of a degree d, we seek its zeros, aka the roots of the equation. At FOCS 2016, Louis and Vempala approximated within an absolutely largest zero of such a real-rooted polynomial at the cost of the evaluation of Newton’s ratio (formula presented) points x and then extended this algorithm to approximation of an absolutely largest eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix at a record Boolean cost. By applying distinct approach and techniques we obtain much more general results at the same computational cost. Our use of Cauchy integrals and randomization is non-trivial and pioneering in this field. Somewhat surprisingly, the Boolean complexity of the accelerated versions of our algorithms in [25, 26] reached below the known lower bounds on the Boolean complexity of polynomial root-finding. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper describes the implementation of a STEM scholarship program which utilized a holistic approach to providing a multi-dimensional student support system. The program has been successful in encouraging and supporting women in Applied mathematics and Computer Science by offering a diverse suite of extracurricular opportunities, actively engaging them in organized events, research projects, and participation in STEM communities, and helping them achieve higher GPAs and shorter times to graduation. The supported women also benefitted from close mentoring relationships with the faculty mentors. The program emphasized the development of empowering settings for women’s engagement and achievement, which act to sustain and expand interest in mathematics and computing, and thereby help them to see themselves as future professionals in the field. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

In this manuscript, we introduce a novel Decision Flow (DF) framework for sampling decisions from a target distribution while incorporating additional guidance from a prior sampler. DF can be viewed as an AI-driven algorithmic reincarnation of the Markov Decision Process (MDP) approach in Stochastic Optimal Control. It extends the continuous-space, continuous-time Path Integral Diffusion sampling technique of [1] to discrete time and space, while also generalizing the Generative Flow Network framework of [2]. In its most basic form – an explicit, Neural Network (NN)-free formulation – DF leverages the linear solvability of the underlying MDP [3] to adjust the transition probabilities of the prior sampler. The resulting Markov process is expressed as a convolution of the reverse-time Green’s function of the prior sampling with the target distribution. We illustrate the DF framework through an example of sampling from the Ising model, discuss potential NN-based extensions, and outline how DF can enhance guided sampling across various applications. This paper presents the results of a systematic literature review developed as part of a doctoral research project in Science and mathematics Education. It aims to profile national and international research using a technological tool called “Buscad“ to map work related to the learning of mathematical concepts by students with intellectual disabilities. It is qualitative in nature, highlighting contributions to the field of inclusive mathematics education, and takes as its theoretical and methodological assumptions the systematic review of literature related to the perspective of inclusive mathematics education. The research was carried out using search terms directly in the following databases: CAPES Theses and Dissertations Catalog (T&D); Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD); CAPES Periodicals Portal; Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO); International Publisher Science, Technology, Medicine (SPRINGER); Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); Scopus; Web of Science; Science Direct; and Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC). The results point to opportunities for dialogue between Brazilian and international research, along with the need to articulate the refinement of diversified resources and instructional materials with the improvement of methodological processes along with socio-cultural discussions on inclusion and valuing diversity.

Intrinsic statistical separation of subpopulations in heterogeneous collective motion via dimensionality reduction

Collective motion of locally interacting agents is found ubiquitously throughout nature. The inability to probe individuals has driven longstanding interest in the development of methods for inferring the underlying interactions. In the context of heterogeneous collectives, where the population consists of individuals driven by different interactions, existing approaches require some knowledge about the heterogeneities or underlying interactions. Here, we investigate the feasibility of identifying the identities in a heterogeneous collective without such prior knowledge. We numerically explore the behavior of a heterogeneous Vicsek model and find sufficiently long trajectories intrinsically cluster in a principal component analysis-based dimensionally reduced model-agnostic description of the data. We identify how heterogeneities in each parameter in the model (interaction radius, noise, population proportions) dictate this clustering. Finally, we show the generality of this phenomenon by finding similar behavior in a heterogeneous D'Orsogna model. Altogether, our results establish and quantify the intrinsic model-agnostic statistical disentanglement of identities in heterogeneous collectives.

Symbolic computation for systems of differential equations is often computationally expensive. Many practical differential models have a form of polynomial or rational ODE system with specified outputs. A basic symbolic approach to analyze these models is to compute and then symbolically process the polynomial system obtained by sufficiently many Lie derivatives of the output functions with respect to the vector field given by the ODE system. In this paper, we present a method for speeding up Gröbner basis computation for such a class of polynomial systems by using specific monomial ordering, including weights for the variables, coming from the structure of the ODE model. We provide empirical results that show improvement across different symbolic computing frameworks and apply the method to speed up structural identifiability analysis of ODE models. © 2024 ACM.

Polymer technology has rapidly advanced across diverse domains, particularly in biomedical applications. Among various polymers, polyurethane (PU) hold great potential in developing biomaterials such as biomedical scaffold and drug delivery. In this study, we have innovatively engineered eco-friendly polyurethane using lignin, a sustainable bio-polyol derived from oil palm empty fruit bunches. To enhance the physicochemical properties of the PU, we have incorporated hydroxyapatite (HA) into the composites. The inclusion of HA has led to notable improvements in crucial properties such as density, porosity, and water absorption, making these composites ideal candidates for tissue regeneration scaffolds. Furthermore, to assess their biomedical applicability in drug delivery and cell scaffolding, we have employed the quercetin drug model. The results revealed a sustained kinetic release behavior within the polyurethane/hydroxyapatite (PU/HA) composites, showcasing their potential for controlled drug delivery applications. Moreover, cytotoxicity assays conducted using neuro-2a cell models demonstrated the non-cytotoxic nature of both PU and PU/HA composites. This finding holds significant implications for biomedical applications, indicating that these composites offer biocompatible platforms for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine endeavors. The ability of these composites to support cell viability underscores their potential for a wide range of biomedical applications, including neural tissue engineering and drug delivery systems targeting brain diseases. These findings pave the way for the development of innovative and sustainable biomaterials with diverse biomedical applications. Bio-based fungicides with nanotechnology delivery systems employing bacterial products, such as antifungal compounds, could be an alternative substitution for synthetic fungicides. Antifungal activity of extract from B. subtilis strain CR.9 and its nanoemulsion formula using medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and Tween-80 was evaluated in vitro and in planta effectiveness against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. glycines associated with soybean plants. For this purpose, the antifungal compounds from bacterial culture were recovered using ethyl acetate as an organic solvent. The fungitoxic activity of antifungal compounds strains CR.9 demonstrated fungal growth inhibition at 394.12 µg/mL (IC₅₀), 250 µg/mL (MIC_EE), and 100 µg/mL (MIC_nanoemulsion), respectively. The EtOAc extract (EE)-nanoemulsion formula developed with a ratio of 2:1 (MCT: Tween-80) showed homogenous size and stability for 25 days without creaming, sedimentation, or separate layers. Moreover, seedlings treatment and soil amendment of EE-nanoemulsion performed high efficacy in suppressing wilt and in agreement with commercial fungicide, Dithane M−45. Overall, the antifungal properties of strain CR.9 may have potency as a bio-based fungicide in plant diseases biocontrol strategy. © 2023 The Authors

Effective planning of the broiler chicken production chain heavily relies on a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing growth and final carcass weight. The broiler chicken supply chain includes various stages, from breeders to retailers. This study analyzes the impact of growth uncertainty in broiler chickens by considering aspects of maintenance management, feed consumption, mortality rates, productivity, and market demand scenarios. The research method uses a two-stage stochastic program and Mixed Integer Linear programming (MILP) to optimize lot-sizing and lot-allocation in the broiler chicken supply chain planning. MILP is applied to maximize the efficiency and responsiveness of lot-sizing and lot-allocation to market demand. Two-stage stochastic modeling allows for the separation of long-term and short-term decisions, enabling adjustments based on uncertain conditions. By simulating various production scenarios, potential issues and improvement opportunities within the supply chain can be identified. Production data is analyzed to ensure that the size and weight of broiler chickens meet market specifications and demands, thereby enhancing customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. The implementation of an integrated broiler chicken supply chain is believed to improve production and distribution efficiency, enabling the fulfillment of market demand at optimal costs. By ensuring this alignment, the research contributes to increased customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Meeting market specifications not only improves product quality but also strengthens the company's competitive position in the market. Higher operational efficiency is also achieved through more effective reductions in production and distribution costs.

Boro-tellurite glasses composed of 57B2O3– (4-y)Na2O-–15Bi2O3-20TeO2–3TiO2–1Tm2O3-yHo2O3 (y = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mol%) were succesfully synthesised and the change in their absorption spectra in wavelength range 300-1100 nm were studied. All glasses were fabricated at the same melting temperature 1000oC and subsequenlty qunched and annnealled in the same manner. It can be seen that glass dopped with only Tm3+ ions (y = 0) shows three absorption peaks, i.e., 471, 686, and 792 nm. As Ho3+ ions were added, there were additional six new peaks appear, i.e., peaks located around 417, 450, 485, 538, and 642 nm. The study reveals that different peaks show difference of sensitivity to the additional Ho3+ ions concentration with peaks around 450 nm shows the most sensitive. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing.
