Advances in subsea exploration in the oceans to discover new petroleum reservoirs and sometimes different kind of minerals at the seabed in ultra deepwater, continuously introduce new challenges in offshore drilling operations. This motivates the development of increasingly safe maritime operations. In offshore petroleum, a marine drilling riser is the pipe that connects a wellhead at the sea bottom to a drillship at the sea surface, as an access to the wellbore. It serves as a guide for the drilling column with the drill bit and conductor to carry cuttings of rock coming from the wellbore drilling and its construction. Drilling riser is constantly exposed to adversity from the environment, such as waves, sea currents and platform motions induced by waves. These elements of the environment are prevailing factors that can cause a riser failure during deepwater drilling operations with undesirable consequences for the environment. In the present work, key parameters that influence the probability of fatigue failure in a marine drilling riser are identified, and a parametric evaluation with those parameters are carried out. Dynamic behavior of a riser is previously calculated and fatigue damage is estimated. Afterwards, the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) is applied to determine the probability of fatigue failure on the riser. Fundamentals of the procedure are described, and results are illustrated through the analysis for a typical riser in deepwater drilling operation. Parametric evaluations are done observing points considered as critical along the riser length, and looking to the sensitivity of key parameters in the process. For this study, the SN curve from API guidelines is applied and accumulated fatigue damage is estimated from simulations of the stress time series and applying the Palmgren-Miner's rule. Finally, the influence of each parameter in the reliability of fatigue failure is verified and discussions given. Copyright © 2021 by ASME

Background: Biodiesel is one of the ecofriendly energy sources that can be generated from edible, non-edible, waste, and algae feedstocks. Over time, the utilization of different kinds of heterogeneous catalysts has been proven critical in the manufacture of biodiesel from diverse feedstocks. They exhibit better reusability and easier separation compared to the homogenous catalysts. Methods: In this work, the advances in the use of heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production from 2018 to 2024 have been evaluated. The process parameters like alcohol to oil molar ratio (M/O), catalyst concentration (%), reaction time and reaction temperature (RT), reusability of the catalyst, etc. are evaluated. The catalysts derived from waste materials through the calcination process are an efficient and cost-effective substitute for conventional catalysts. Nanomaterials, due to their small size and higher aspect ratio, provide very high efficiency and reusability in catalytic reactions. Significant findings: The heterogeneous catalysts are also found to be highly reusable for multiple cycles and the leaching of active sites, clogging of pore spaces of catalyst, etc. are the major causes of catalyst deactivation. Magnetic heterogeneous catalysts have shown good biodiesel yields and high reusability. Also, naturally occurring calcium oxide and potassium compounds present in waste derived catalysts helped to give high biodiesel yields. The future direction in the path of development of heterogeneous catalysts from cheap, abundant, and environmentally benign materials. The synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts from waste materials addresses the issue of waste disposal and converting solid waste to value-added catalysts. The life cycle assessment studies, encompassing heterogeneous catalyst synthesis, feedstock oil extraction, biodiesel production, and fuel combustion may give valuable input on the environmental impact of the entire process. © 2024

The rise in energy-efficient, sustainable building operations necessitates the development of advanced innovations that reduce heating and cooling demands while maintaining comfortable indoor thermal conditions. Phase change materials (PCMs) demonstrate significant potential as a stabilization mechanism through latent heat storage for managing residential indoor temperatures;however, their integration into systems requires further optimisation. This review examines PCM-assisted ventilation technologies—specifically ventilated façades, roofs, and windows—highlighting their energy performance, which ranges from 7.7 % to 32.8 %, and their capacity to reduce peak temperatures by 2.5 °C to 7.02 °C. These improvements are influenced by PCM thickness of 15–35 mm and melting temperatures of 15–37 °C. The combination of PCM-enhanced hybrid systems with natural or mechanical ventilation has shown greater operational effectiveness, particularly in hot climates and when integrated with adaptive control systems to achieve optimal performance. Despite their benefits, widespread adoption of PCM technologies is hindered by high material costs, hysteresis effects, and limited discharge cycle efficiency. Nevertheless, PCM-enhanced ventilation systems have proven capable of supporting sustainable, low-energy buildings. Continued research is needed to develop cost-effective design strategies, automated control mechanisms, and climate-responsive optimisations to fully realize their potential. © 2025 The Author(s)

This paper focuses on the effects of potential ground motion variations in the range of 6.6–7.2 Mw from the Lembang Fault on the dynamic response of groundwater (Gw)-bearing layers in the Bandung Groundwater Basin. The dynamic response of the soil deposits is considered as a one-dimensional model due to the vertical shear wave propagation therein, influenced by local soil conditions or properties that are linear viscoelastic with variable damping. Meanwhile, the bedrock is considered an elastic medium upon which the shear wave propagates due to ground motion. The ground motion may cause the liquefaction of Gw-bearing layers near the bedrock with intensities starting from 6.8 Mw. Ground motions in the range of 6.6–7.2 Mw can cause peak ground acceleration at the ground surface ranging between 0.15–0.25 gal.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most rapidly rising chronic diseases around the globe. To combat these rising numbers, active research has been done in recent years to enhance the sensitivity, selectivity, and specificity of glucose biosensors. Despite the easy availability of these enzymatic glucose sensors, these have demonstrated limitations like low stability, short shelf-life, and being easily altered by physical and chemical environmental factors. To overcome these limitations, non-enzymatic sensors, also called fourth-generation glucose sensors, have been developed. These sensors use nanomaterials and do not employ any enzymes therefore exhibit better shelf life, improved sensitivity, and allow for quick detection of glucose without needing additional steps. In recent years, bimetallic nanocomposite-based fourth-generation glucose sensors have gained widespread attention from the scientific community. Owing to the synergistic effect of two distinct metal nanomaterials, these sensors show enhanced reproducibility and excellent stability as compared to monometallic nanomaterials. In this review, we aim to represent a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in the development of bimetallic nanocomposite-based glucose sensors for rapid and accurate glucose detection. After a brief introduction, we discussed the various bimetallic nanomaterials developed in recent years, followed by a discussion on the mechanism of action of such sensors. We then briefly discussed the industrial challenges of developing such sensors and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of bimetallic nanomaterial-based sensors. We finally concluded the review by highlighting the future perspectives of this new and upcoming field. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

The increasing population at Teluk Pemedas and Sanipah coastal areas of Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province, has led to coastal degradation. The problem was mainly caused by conversion of mangrove into aquaculture, agriculture, plantation industrial, and residential areas. This research was a study case, used descriptive analysis to describe the local fishermen activity using belat traditional device to catch fish. The results revealed that there were many fishermen still did not know the benefits of mangrove for economy growth, ecological, ecotourism etc. This condition affects to the decline of the mangrove function. Fisherman who used belat often move from one location to another location in order to find places that have many catches. The belat which are placed in good environment mangrove areas produces lots of catches that greatly benefit the fisherman, therefore mangrove ecosystem must be well preserved for the sustainability of fishermen's efforts to earn a living. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

We report a systematic study of the 5d-electron-doped system Ce(Fe1−xIrx)2Al10 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15). With increasing x, the orthorhombic b axis decreases slightly while accompanying changes in a and c leave the unit cell volume almost unchanged. Inelastic neutron scattering, along with thermal and transport measurements, reveal that for the Kondo semiconductor CeFe2Al10, the low-temperature energy gap which is proposed to be a consequence of strong c-f hybridization, is suppressed by a small amount of Ir substitution for Fe, and that the system adopts a metallic ground state with an increase in the density of states at the Fermi level. The charge or transport gap collapses (at x = 0.04) faster than the spin gap with Ir substitution. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation measurements demonstrate that the system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic order below a Néel temperature, TN, of 3.1(2) K for x = 0.15. The ordered moment is estimated to be smaller than 0.07(1) µB/Ce although the trivalent state of Ce is confirmed by Ce L3-edge x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. It is suggested that the c-f hybridization gap, which plays an important role in the unusually high ordering temperatures observed in CeT2Al10 (T = Ru and Os), may not be necessary for the onset of magnetic order with a low TN seen here in Ce(Fe1−xIrx)2Al10. The growing demand for oil brings the need for discovery of deeper reservoirs, especially of ultra-deepwater reservoirs. Thus, production in marine systems using components such as risers (flexible or rigid pipes) has been the focus of many studies in different areas. These ducts are used in the transportation of multiphase fluids (oil, water and gas) produced from the oil well located on the seabed to the platform surface. Due to the extreme conditions present in the offshore fields of production, the equipments that transport produced fluids operate close to their limits. So eventually, the flexible pipes may have structural integrity faults like leaks, which can cause production losses, accidents with victims and environmental disasters. The leak depends of a number of properties or parameters measured at the site of the leak, for example, integrity of the pipe material, release of fluids and noise emission characteristics or manifestation of some other type of signal behavior, variation of pressure drops close to the leak, among others. There are a variety of techniques available for detecting leaks, among which there is the mathematical modeling approach using computational techniques. In this context, this paper aims to study the fluid dynamics of a transient multiphase flow in a catenary riser in the presence of leakage. Herein a 3D Eulerian-Eulerian model was applied, including the turbulent model (RNG k-ϵ), using the commercial package ANSYS CFX® 15 to perform all simulations. The numerical results of velocity, volume fraction and pressure of the involved phases are presented and discussed. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications.

The purpose of this research is to identify in the literature: causes, factors, case study descriptions and adopted solutions for production losses regarding the petroleum flow in offshore oil wells. Those facts will be organized and structured to identify potential zones of intervention for planning the well maintenance during well design phase to avoid production losses. This paper focuses on four offshore regions: Campos Basin, Gulf of Mexico, North Sea, and West Africa. These regions represent the most significant share of offshore oil production in the world. Data set available in the last thirty five years through academic, technical and governmental reports in the literature were the basis of this study. The procedure was accomplished in three steps: (1) data research (2) analysis of the data (3) guidelines establishment. The main cause of production loss regarding the petroleum flow is the solids deposition in the well/line system, such as hydrates, asphaltenes, wax, scales (barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, and naturally occurrence radioactive material), and calcium naphthenates. In this work the superposition of graphics (hydrate curve, wax appearance temperature, asphaltene onset pressure, and saturation index) resulted in a region free of solids deposition, denominated as "flow assurance envelope". The main expected result is to propose a guideline to be used during the well design phase in order to minimize and facilitate the well intervention. The main contributions of this paper to the oil industry are the identification of potential zones of intervention due to solids deposition in the well/line system, the foresight of well intervention before the beginning of the oilfield production, and finally, possibilities to improve the well or intervention design.
