Collision Avoidance/Mitigation System (CAMS) for autonomous vehicles is a crucial technology that ensures the safety and reliability of autonomous driving systems. Conventional collision avoidance approaches struggle in complex and various scenarios by avoiding collisions based on rules for specific collision scenarios. This has led to learning-based methods using neural networks for adaptive collision avoidance. However, the approaches directly outputting control inputs through neural networks have drawbacks in interpretability and stability. To address these limitations, we propose a trajectory planning method for CAMS that combines deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and quintic polynomial (QP) trajectory planning. The proposed method determines the terminal state and confidence of the trajectory using DRL and plans a QP trajectory based on them. By utilizing the terminal state and confidence of the trajectory rather than direct control inputs as the output of the neural network, it generates a more realistic and continuous path. Moreover, this approach considers collision avoidance and mitigation in an integrated manner through the reward function of RL. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method not only improves interpretability and stability compared to existing learning-based methods but also upholds performance in complex and various collision scenarios.

A mathematical model of a sustainable H2 generation reactor that utilizes aluminum and seawater is introduced. Conservation of species and the kinetics of the H2 production reaction from aluminum and seawater allowed for obtaining the process transient response in a batch reactor. Continuous steady state production was assessed by adding a balance of energy, allowing for reactants inlet mass flow rates, and calculating the outlet H2 mass flow (generation) rate. The theoretical H2 production curve data showed good quantitative and qualitative agreement with experimental data. The validated mathematical model was then used to optimize the continuous reactor. The maximum was sharp, since an 85% variation between the maximum and the smallest H2 generation rate value as a function of the inlet NaOH solution volumetric flow rate tested range was verified. Such fundamental result stresses the importance of operating the system at the optimal condition, no matter how complex the actual reactor design may be. Since aluminum is inexpensive, abundant, and fully recyclable, in situ sustainable H2 production could allow for fuel cell stacks to become all electric ships (AES) power sources.

Benefits of a failure friendly culture, e.g., learning from failure, are widely known in occupational settings. Validated scales have been developed to measure organizational failure culture and individuals' mind-sets on failure. While research on learning from failure exists in secondary education, scales for higher education are lacking. To support both higher education engineering instructors and students, this contribution aims to develop a Culture of Failure Scale to assess students' and lecturers' handling of failures in engineering higher education settings. This data-driven approach helps inform instructors about aspects of educational settings that are safe and conducive to learning and supports their students to develop a mind-set where failures are seen as a source for improvements and learning. Exemplary application of the developed scale is shown by assessing the failure culture in different groupings, e.g., gender, between two participating German and US institutions.

The use of air conditioning systems has been increasing considerably in the last years and will be one of the top drivers of global electricity demand over the next three decades. The overwhelming majority of air conditioners in use today around the globe are split systems, and the inverter technology is taking over the market for this kind of equipment. When a ductless split system air conditioner uses inverter technology it is commonly known as inverter air conditioner (IAC). For energy performance assessment of buildings equipped with those systems, simulation tools usually employ empirical models based on data provided by manufacturers to be able to simulate IAC performance, however, even with the most updated standards in place, the data is not enough to provide a robust empirical model. In this way, this work provides an empirical model based on almost 100 experimental tests variations to be able to simulate IAC performance more accurately, considering a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions and different compressor speeds. All the tests were carried out in a psychrometric calorimeter working according to an ISO standard. The calculations steps to determine total cooling capacity, sensible cooling capacity and energy performance together with the uncertainties of measurement calculation are described in detail to assist researchers to replicate this methodology. The model provided in the present work can predict the performance of the IAC tested with averaged errors lower than 5% for an internal wet-bulb temperature range of 10-24°C and an external dry-bulb temperature range of 25-40°C. © 2022, The Authors. This paper presents a practical methodology for optimizing the geometry of electrical grounding grids at industrial frequencies of 50Hz and 60Hz, integrating advanced calculation techniques and evolutionary algorithms to improve the safety and operational performance of electrical grounding systems. The proposed approach is particularly beneficial for industrial automation and control systems, where effective grounding is necessary to maintain system reliability and prevent downtime. This methodology employs mathematical modeling and computational tools to optimize grid parameters, ensuring compliance with safety standards while reducing operational costs, thus contributing to the overall efficiency of automated systems in industrial environments. The study reports a reduction of up to 66% in the number of vertical rods and 40% in horizontal conductors compared to traditional methods. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can significantly reduce material usage and costs while maintaining electrical safety in accordance with regulatory standards, making it applicable to a wide range of industrial settings, including substations and automated facilities. © 2025 The Authors

Today’s pluralistic and globalized society requires a global perspective in how we think, view ourselves, and relate to others to collaborate successfully with people with different cultural backgrounds. To support the development of a global perspective, universities cultivate international co-operations to enable international mobility for students, faculty, and staff. However, in-person mobility can be inhibited due to various reasons. To support a wider pool of students gaining international experience, modern digital mediated course formats can be used to offer virtual instead of in-person mobility. This contribution evaluates a digital mediated course for mechanical engineering students (Global engineering, GE) held in co-operation between an US and a Portuguese university, where internationally mixed student groups working on design projects in an Hyflex setting. Asides a literature driven discussion about the need for Global Engineers and a detailed description of the GE course, a longitudinal analysis was performed to assess the impact of the GE course on the students’ development of a global perspective. The longitudinal analysis showed strong statistical support that the digitally mediated GE course improved the participating students’ global perspective, assessed with the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI), tremendously. The observed improvements were in three of the six GPI dimensions comparable to an in-person semester abroad. Limitations of the study and future investigations are discussed.

Prostate cancer represents a major threat to health. Early detection is vital in reducing the mortality rate among prostate cancer patients. One approach involves using multi-modality (CT, MRI, US, etc.) computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for the prostate region. However, prostate segmentation is challenging due to imperfections in the images and the prostate’s complex tissue structure. The advent of precision medicine and a significant increase in clinical capacity have spurred the need for various data-driven tasks in the field of medical imaging. Recently, numerous machine learning and data mining tools have been integrated into various medical areas, including image segmentation. This article proposes a new classification method that differentiates supervision types, either in number or kind, during the training phase. Subsequently, we conducted a survey on artificial intelligence (AI)-based automatic prostate segmentation methods, examining the advantages and limitations of each. Additionally, we introduce variants of evaluation metrics for the verification and performance assessment of the segmentation method and summarize the current challenges. Finally, future research directions and development trends are discussed, reflecting the outcomes of our literature survey, suggesting high-precision detection and treatment of prostate cancer as a promising avenue. Impact Statement — Prostate cancer remains a significant health threat, necessitating early detection to reduce mortality rates. Current diagnostic approaches, particularly in medical imaging, face challenges in accurate prostate segmentation due to the organ's complex structure and imaging imperfections. In competitive segments like automobile and bus manufacturing industries, quality of vehicles need to be improved constantly to meet internal and external market demands. Compliance with international standard regulations for electronic equipment require expensive tests as part of the design and certification processes. In this work, a methodology to simulate electromagnetic compatibility tests is proposed, enabling cost reduction during certification, and consequently reducing development time. Anode design is a crucial factor for the further development of lithium-ion battery (LIB) technology, especially in terms of achieving high charging rate performance, as typically needed in electric vehicles (EV). In the present work, a unique battery test cell was designed and fabricated to study in-situ the mechanical behavior of the silicon nanowire electrode during electrochemical lithiation using synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction. Modelling of the nanostructured anode was also performed to provide further understanding of the in-situ findings. The combined approach provides further in-depth understanding of the evolution of the mechanics in the silicon nanowires (1D nanostructure) during operation of the battery, and furthermore shows the path for potentially enhancing the performance of the device. 3D nanostructures have been identified as the key to dramatically enhanced kinetics performance of LIB. However, existing fabrication methodologies for 3D nanostructures are inherently expensive – using advanced lithography techniques or other nanopatterning methodologies, as well as using additive manufacturing approaches. Electrospinning (as an integrated additive manufacturing methodology) may be used to produce low-cost 3D-printed fiber structures. This will pave the way to achieve the order of magnitude increase in battery kinetics as needed to realize the vision of the sustainable transportation.

Change in intragranular misorientation during stress relaxation behavior in Cu-Ni-Si alloy subjected to continuous cyclic bending

Stress relaxation resistance is often required in application of electrical parts for copper and its alloys. The stress relaxation behavior should be influenced by stored strain through manufacturing process. In the present study, a Cu-Ni-Si alloy solution-treated sheet was subjected to continuous cyclic bending (CCB), which was proposed as a useful straining technique to impose higher strain on the surface and lower strain in the center layer of metal sheets. Samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscope / electron back scatter diffraction (SEM/EBSD) technique to investigate stored strain and stress relaxation process. CCB raised up the strength of Cu-Ni-Si alloy sheets at room temperature. The stress relaxation ratios of the CCBent sheets increased with an increment of test exposure time at 423K. The stress relaxation process was accompanied with change in intragranular misorientation of the samples. Change in intragranular misorientation through the stress relaxation test was understood as a result of release of residual and applied stresses with consumption of stored strain.
