WebLabs, or Remotely Operated Laboratories, allow for remote control and monitoring of interactive or batched systems with educational objectives. Considered as additional resources in education, they contribute to a flexible learning model and make possible for students to perform laboratory experiments remotely, off-class, in collaboration, thus contributing to the reduction of laboratory equipment idleness. The purpose of this paper is to report steps in designing and enabling a WebLab with background theme on the control and monitoring of thermal comfort parameters in a newborn baby incubator. Three didactical experiments can be performed in this WebLab: transfer function evaluation, on-off control and PID controller tuning, with users challenged to optimally tune the parameters of a controller algorithm. In the end of the session, the user can enter his/her impressions regarding the WebLab usage by answering a questionnaire. The WebLab design includes the evaluation of students' abilities through performance indexes while keeping operation within the requirements of an associated medical safety standard. A systematic approach for the WebLab design process has been employed, with the system design split in three layers: physical system, hardware and software. Sets of qualitative and quantitative requirements to be attended were defined. System and product design techniques, such as House of Quality, Morphological Matrix and Pugh's Method, have been employed to address the conversion of the project requirements into the Weblab overall solution. Virtual Instrumentation resources have been used to acquire temperature, humidity and air speed signals. The LabVIEW platform was used to support experiment integration and to create the user interface using LabVIEW Remote Panel architecture. The WebLab has been successfully implemented and presently can be accessed within the university network. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper presents a practical methodology for optimizing the geometry of electrical grounding grids at industrial frequencies of 50Hz and 60Hz, integrating advanced calculation techniques and evolutionary algorithms to improve the safety and operational performance of electrical grounding systems. The proposed approach is particularly beneficial for industrial automation and control systems, where effective grounding is necessary to maintain system reliability and prevent downtime. This methodology employs mathematical modeling and computational tools to optimize grid parameters, ensuring compliance with safety standards while reducing operational costs, thus contributing to the overall efficiency of automated systems in industrial environments. The study reports a reduction of up to 66% in the number of vertical rods and 40% in horizontal conductors compared to traditional methods. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can significantly reduce material usage and costs while maintaining electrical safety in accordance with regulatory standards, making it applicable to a wide range of industrial settings, including substations and automated facilities. © 2025 The Authors

Strategies when unfolded through a systematic methodology, can ensure a greater probability of positive return for organizations such as increased quality and reduced production costs. In this paper, it will be presented the development of a systematic methodology for Strategic Management of Operations, with the objective of proposing the construction and refinement of a conceptual model used to develop Strategies. The organizations used in the research sample are characterized to be in the area of Service Operations in Project regimes. This methodology can optimize the use of a correct approach to the processes of development of Strategies, with more accurate monitoring of all stages of implementation. Finally, the study allows us to analyze the application of the methodology, checking its academic contributions and the results of the case studies analyzed.

This paper proposes a solution for markerless gait analysis based on point cloud data, which are three-dimensional data obtained by sensors such as LiDAR, that can capture body movements in real-time and in various environments. Gait analysis aims to evaluate the differences in symmetry between the left and right sides of the body, which can indicate diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The point cloud is a sparse matrix with N points in 3D space and the intensity of reflected light, which does not have an ordering between the points and the minimum distance between them is responsible for the density of the cloud. In the proposed method the point cloud is transformed into voxels, which are cubic units that facilitate data processing, and each set of points in the voxel is used for person detection. The points of the person are used to segment the body parts, and each part is used to estimate the joint position. The joint position is used to construct a rigid body model, where a person is represented by their segments. The rotations and translations of the segment over time are used to build the gait analysis graph. By comparing the rotation of each segment over time, it is possible to calculate the difference between the left and right sides and detect at what moment of the movement the difference is large enough to indicate the onset of pathology. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The fourth industrial revolution makes more effective use of data generated during manufacturing processes and creates a more interconnected manufacturing network. In accordance with Industry 4.0, data should be used for process and/or system integration, including the decision-making process. In this context, this paper aims to relate the process of decision-making with process mining through concept maps, assisting the areas of Data engineering and Analytics. To do so, some Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making/Analysis (MCDM/A) methods will be addressed in order to conceptually highlight the relationship between knowledge and decision dimensions. As a result, the definitions about these fields of study allow perceiving an information and knowledge conciliation approach promoted by the integrated view of process mining and MCDM/A methods. © 2017 The Authors

Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the most difficult problems in the Combinatorial Optimization area. The goal of TSP is to find one path that can travel between all the nodes (instances) of the graph just once (Hamiltonian tour) in the smallest tour, that is, smallest Euclidian distance. In this context, many other meta-heuristics techniques based on evolutionary algorithms have been propose in literature to solve TSP problems. Differential Evolution (DE) is a relatively new simple evolutionary algorithm, which is an effective adaptive approach to global optimization over continuous search spaces. The design principles of DE are simplicity and efficiency. The most distinct feature of DE is that it mutates vectors by adding weighted. random vector differentials to them. Since its invention. DE has been applied with high success on many numerical optimization problems outperforming other more popular meta-heuristics such as the genetic algorithms. Recently. some researchers extended with success the application of DE to complex combinatorial optimization problems with discrete decision variables such as the traveling salesman problem, the machine layout problem, the now-shop scheduling problem. In this paper, the following discrete DE approaches for the TSP are proposed and evaluated: i) DE approach without local search, ii) DE with local search based on Lin-Kernighan-Heulsgaun (LKH) method, and iii) DE with local search based on Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) and together with LKH method. Numerical study is carried out using the TSPLIB of test TSP problems. In this context, the computational results are compared with the other results in the recent TSP literature. The obtained results show that LKH method is the best method to reach optimal results for TSPLIB benchmarks, but for largest problems, the ED+VNS improve the quality of obtained results.

Digital transformation is now widely discussed and applied in different enterprises and under various organizational aspects. Traditional industries recognize the need to innovate and digitalize their business processes and models. Among these industries, the railway sector presents a vast space for digital transformation. The railway has several operational, regulatory, regional and technological specificities that must be taken into account in the digitalization processes. Given the multiple aspects involved and the transdisciplinarity, the digital transformation strategy and roadmap of companies must be defined in a way that fits it to the corporate strategy, allowing digital transformation program to be implemented effectively, prioritizing internal sectors with the greatest strategic impact, generating greater productivity, business models improvement, security and, above all, competitiveness for the sector. This research aims to propose a model for the definition of the digital transformation strategy in the railway companies using the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as a tool for strategic organizational analysis and multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) to define the drivers for digital transformation in the railway. Finally, to demonstrate the proposal, a case study will be carried out at a Brazilian railway company. © 2021 The authors and IOS Press.

The purpose of this article is to analyze and describe sustainable practices based on biodiversity assets adopted by one of the largest global cosmetics company, located in Brazil. The company occupies the 19th position of the Global Ranking 100 Sustainability. The research method is bibliographic research that employed open, non-classified documents publicized by the company. The main findings of the study underscore the relevance of the rural communities in developing a supply chain based on biodiversity as well as the importance of the relationships among the tiers to implement a sustainable business model. The company relies on high-quality products associated with environmental development. Currently, biodiversity suppliers account for 80% circa of natural raw materials, the so-called biodiversity asset, which represents the core of the sustainable business model of the company. The findings can be generalized by helping other supply chains to develop and implement sustainable business models supported by biodiversity. Such type of a model can help companies achieve expressive business performance and, at the same time, social relevance to peripheral or vulnerable rural communities. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC

One of the most important aspects to be considered by Distribution Centers (DCs) is the improvement of the process in relation to the attributes of the service that is provided. The purpose of this article is to analyze various alternatives for the definition of a DC with the use of a method of multi-criteria support in decision making, more specifically, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for the allocation and weighting of importance levels for structuring DCs. To further illustrate the process, a field study was conducted in a multinational company in the food sector. This enabled the identification of the best of three possible structures that were evaluated based on the criteria and sub-criteria targeted in the decision context. The results show that the cost and quality factors are primarily responsible for choosing the most appropriate alternative. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
