The firefly algorithm (FA) is a new population-based metaheuristic bioinspired on the behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. As a population-based algorithm, the FA suffers from large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For reducing execution times we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the FA algorithm that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In addition, this work proposes the application of the opposition-based learning (OBL) approach to the FA algorithm. The respective hardware implementation (HPOFA) was mapped into a Virtex5 FPGA device and numerical experiments using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the FA algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity and avoiding the premature convergence problem. Synthesis results point out that the HPOFA architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications.

This paper proposes a method to create a geometric model of anatomically adjusted skull prosthesis to be used in machining. The missing area in a skull bone due a hole can be virtually filled in each tomography slice by an adjusted arc. The idea is to generate the missing information from a criterion based on the curvature of the skull shape. We are proposing the use of an adjusted ellipse on its curvature. If the ellipse is properly adjusted in each computed tomography slice, the arcs that represent the part of missing bone can be reconstructed in 3D. The problem is that many ellipses can be created similarly, and the best solution must be found. For this study we have used AI-based techniques that help in choosing an appropriate solution. It was employed the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm in order to find the best solution for each tomographic slice. Once the solution found for each slice, the area of missing bone can be virtually rebuilt to generate the profile in a CAD system. The process results in a new image, which is adjusted model to the prosthesis anatomical area absent in bone structure.

Artificial bee colony (ABC) is an optimization algorithm inspired on the intelligent behavior of honey bee swarms. It is suitable to be applied when mathematical techniques are impractical or provide suboptimal solutions. As a population-based algorithm, the ABC suffers on large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For that we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the opposition-based ABC algorithm (HPOABC) that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). This paper presents a method for visualization of displacement between the centre of the femoral head and acetabulum cavity centre. The measurement is performed in 3D tomography reconstructed images. The femoral head and acetabulum cavity can be represented by synthetic spheres and can be reconstructed based on the slice information of each bone of the joint. With the two spheres it is possible to measure the degree of the displacement between the centres. This representation gives support to the specialized doctors in their diagnostic of hip subluxation in children with cerebral paralysis, once that this problem causes pain because the acetabulum and femur disengagement. The proposal method is a compilation of some computational techniques of image handling such as bone segmentation using Hough Transform, chain code for reduction of the number of the points, Delaunay triangulation to perform a 3D reconstruction and OpenGL graphic library. A software prototype was constructed to validate the method proposed.

Prosthesis can be seen as a complex product and its project requires a formal method to consistent development. In this research, the main objective is to determine a feasible method for the creation of virtual models of anatomic human prosthesis. The work presents a conceptual model based on digital images applied in 3D reconstruction of computed tomography scans. The proposed method uses an automatic way based on genetic algorithm to build the virtual models to bone geometry. The CAD system can be used to build the geometric models in preparing to prosthesis generation by the production viewpoint. The problem of open contour is addressed. A case study to fill a missing area in skull is used to demonstrate the process. The work involves some technologies as CAD modeling, image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms that can be applied together in order to obtain a virtual model to prosthesis conception.
