Among the existing meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, a well-known branch is the differential evolution (DE). DE is a powerful population-based algorithm of evolutionary computation field designed for solving global optimization problems which only has a few control parameters. With an eye to improve the performance of DE, in this paper, a DE approach combined with a cultural algorithm technique based on normative knowledge (NDE) is investigated to estimate the heat transfer coefficient during freezing treatment by inverse analysis. Numerical results for inverse heat transfer problem demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the NDE algorithm. In this application, NDE approach outperforms a classical DE approach in terms of quality of solution.

During the response and recovery phases of a disaster, an important issue is waste management, which includes generation, transportation, transfer, processing, recycling, and reuse of debris. In this paper, we analyzed the logistical process related to the management of 5400 metric tons of waste from the 2019 oil spill in Brazil, considering environmental impacts and cleaning efforts. The analyses show the quantities handled by the state governments responsible for the operation and the main destination of the residues, which was the cement industry. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

General anaesthesia is a clinical procedure that involves the continuous monitoring of several parameters for the correct application of anaesthetics and associated drugs. Focusing on the automatic control in anaesthesia, this work presents a multiobjective optimization design of controllers based on the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) to solve the problem of drug delivery for induction of anaesthesia. Five Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers in a decentralized scheme were tuned for one specific patient and tested in a total of 24 simulated patients. Acting over the infusions of Propofol, Remifentanil, Atracurium, Dobutamine, and Sodium Nitroprusside the proposed controllers could maintain the controlled variables in a safe range for surgical procedures.

This paper is focused on the problem of uncertain process control by using RMPC (robust model predictive control). A relevant class of RMPC algorithms is the one characterized by the use of the LMI framework. This field started in the middle of nineties and since then several works applying LMIs in the context of RMPC have been proposed. Most of them assume a polytopic representation of the process uncertainties and require full-state feedback. On the other hand, several works describing the theory and applicability of OBF (orthonormal basis functions) in identification and control fields can be found in the literature. So, the present paper proposes the use of OBF for uncertain process modelling and for RMPC algorithm synthesis. It is shown that, due to the proposed approach, one obtains an output feedback control law, with set-point tracking. This represents an advantage in actual applications. Moreover, well established state feedback RMPC strategies can be reviewed under the OBF modelling perspective. Simulation results illustrate the proposed methodology.

An artificial neural network (ANN) consists of a number of interconnecting artificial neurons and employs mathematical or computational models for information processing. ANNs are suitable for handling large amounts of dynamic, noisy and nonlinear data. On the other hand, the wavelet theory provides a multi-resolution approximation for discriminate functions. The combination of the wavelet transforms theory with the basic concept of ANNs leads to new mapping networks called wavelet neural networks (WNNs) or wavenets, which are proposed as an alternative to feedforward ANNs for approximating arbitrary nonlinear functions. Generalized from radial basis function ANNs, WNNs are in fact feed-forward neural networks with one hidden layer, radial wavelets as activation functions in the hidden nodes and a linear output layer. The contribution of this paper is to evaluate the WNNs to model a parathlete swimmer behavior. The parathlete swimmer swims the breaststroke style using biomechanics data generated by the software tool called SWUMSUIT, which was developed in Tokyo Technological Institute in Japan. The forecasted results clearly show that WNN has good prediction properties. The proposed WNN modeling approach can benefit disabled swimmers (parathletes) to gain competitive advantage by studying the biomechanics involved in the sport and considering the help of simulations systems.

Many works propose to use decentralized models to control and supervise physical systems. The decomposition tasks are, often, executed by an expert on the physical application. Recent works developed at LAAS-CNRS propose method to systematically decompose centralised models based on Petri nets. This method generates redundant information between the sub-modules. In some cases, these redundancies are necessary to guarantee the dependability of the system (by duplicating critical information). It can also be used by the diagnosis algorithm in order to improve the fault isolation (by pointing out the relation between sub-models) and to reduce the maintenance costs (by reducing the number of sub-models that must be modified to update the system). However, the duplication of information introduce extra costs that can be observed by the complexity of keeping the data coherence and by the surcharge of the communication network coming from the data exchange between interdependent sub-models. This paper presents a set of indicators that can be used by the designer's team to evaluate the consequences of redundant information introduction and to help them to decide the most appropriated configuration of the system

In this paper we are presenting the statement and evaluation guidelines of a control engineering benchmark, oriented for multi-objective optimisation design techniques. This is done with the aim of promoting new research on this field, by defining a benchmark to have reproducibility and comparability of the three steps involved in the multi-objective process: problem statement, optimisation process and multi-criteria decision making. The proposed benchmark is a single-input single-output process based on the Peltier effect. Rules and guidelines, merged with common practices in control systems engineering, are highlighted and disclosed in the multi-objective open invited track 2020.

This classical way to manage product development processes for massive production seems to be changing: high pressure for cost reduction, higher quality standards, markets reaching for innovation lead to the necessity of new tools for development control. Into this, and learning from the automotive and aerospace industries factories from other segments are starting to understand and apply manufacturing and assembly oriented projects to ease the task of generate goods and from this obtain at least a part of the expected results. This paper is intended to demonstrate the applicability of the concepts of Concurrent engineering and DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) in the development of products and parts for the White Goods industry in Brazil (major appliances as refrigerators, cookers and washing machines), showing one case concerning the development and releasing of a component. Finally is demonstrated in a short term how was reached a solution that could provide cost savings and reduction on the time to delivery using those techniques.
