Hoshin Kanri and A3: a proposal for integrating variability into the policy deployment process

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology to support the Hoshin Kanri (HK) process taking into account the variance of senior managers’ perspective regarding the relationships among objectives, key performance indicators and continuous improvement (CI) projects. Design/methodology/approach: A four-step methodology incorporates the A3 report into the HK, whose deployment was weighted by the variability among managers’ perception about the importance of each decision. This methodology was applied in a market-leader Mexican auto parts manufacturing company that is undergoing a Lean Manufacturing (LM) implementation. Findings: The results indicate that the proposed methodology provides an easier approach to consolidate different perspectives and weight the importance of CI projects. Moreover, it minimizes the possibility of managerial conflicts or the influence of a determined senior manager on others’ opinions during the deployment and prioritization. Practical implications: This work may be of great interest to managers, consultants and professionals who deal with the implementation of LM and wish to prioritize the importance of CI projects within the perspective of HK. Originality/value: HK provides a systematic approach to integrate strategic management with daily routine management through an adequate deployment of organizational policies to all levels. However, companies usually struggle with several issues such as the style of senior managers and consensus establishment among different opinions, which emphasizes the relevance of the proposed methodology in this study. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Companies are more commonly adopting the distributed teams' model, in order to increase their knowledge and skill set. In doing so the company will obtain several benefits, but it will lose its personal touch in managing their employees. Aiming to verify if this tradeoff is beneficial for the company, Performance Measurement systems are more and more being applied to distributed teams and to follow this growth researchers are consistently focusing on this area. Due to this focus the count of articles reporting developments in the required capabilities to form and manage distributed teams performance measurement system increases as well. Along the way some researchers are developing/applying different types of literature review on the subject in order to identify its growth and the main areas the topic is growing. Following this trend the author performed a systematic review on the theme "Which organizational capabilities/competences a company must have in order to manage/develop distributed teams performance?". This paper aims to present a model to evaluate such literature review in order to quantify and qualify the results to make it even more clearly to other researchers. Based on the results of the research, others will be able to compare the research areas and contribute with its development.

The problem of failure occurrence in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) tends to increase according to their complexity leading to time-consuming tasks as the localisation and repairing. The occurrence of failures during the exploitation stage can deeply modify the FMS performances or its availability. We want to investigate the maintenance integration into a control-monitoring framework, from the control system's early design stage to the maintenance policies execution, so as to improve production time and minimize unplanned costly breakdowns of FMS. This paper proposes a modular and hierarchic control-monitoring-maintenance architecture (CMM) for FMS based on Petri nets with objects (PNO). These efforts acts as a basis for the control architecture of a robot-driven flexible cell, connected to the Ethernet-TCP/IP. © 2006 IEEE.

Strategies when unfolded through a systematic methodology, can ensure a greater probability of positive return for organizations such as increased quality and reduced production costs. In this paper, it will be presented the development of a systematic methodology for Strategic Management of Operations, with the objective of proposing the construction and refinement of a conceptual model used to develop Strategies. The organizations used in the research sample are characterized to be in the area of Service Operations in Project regimes. This methodology can optimize the use of a correct approach to the processes of development of Strategies, with more accurate monitoring of all stages of implementation. Finally, the study allows us to analyze the application of the methodology, checking its academic contributions and the results of the case studies analyzed.

In accordance with Industry 4.0, data should be used for process and/or system integration, including the decision-making process. In this context, this paper aims to relate the process of decision-making with process mining through concept maps, assisting the areas of Data engineering and Analytics. To do so, some Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making/Analysis (MCDM/A) methods will be addressed in order to conceptually highlight the relationship between knowledge and decision dimensions. As a result, the definitions about these fields of study allow perceiving an information and knowledge conciliation approach promoted by the integrated view of process mining and MCDM/A methods. © 2017 The Authors

This work presents a new global optimization algorithm based on differential evolution (DE) method and DE combined with chaotic sequences (DEC) given by logistic map. In this paper, the optimal shape design of Loney's solenoids benchmark problem is carried out by DE and DEC algorithms. The results of DE and DEC approaches are also investigated and their performance compared with those reported in the literature. © 2006 IEEE.

One of the most important aspects to be considered by Distribution Centers (DCs) is the improvement of the process in relation to the attributes of the service that is provided. The purpose of this article is to analyze various alternatives for the definition of a DC with the use of a method of multi-criteria support in decision making, more specifically, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for the allocation and weighting of importance levels for structuring DCs. To further illustrate the process, a field study was conducted in a multinational company in the food sector. This enabled the identification of the best of three possible structures that were evaluated based on the criteria and sub-criteria targeted in the decision context. The results show that the cost and quality factors are primarily responsible for choosing the most appropriate alternative. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The technological development in healthcare experienced in actual days has relationship with the integration of many knowledge areas, fundamentally by searching new solutions in order to improve the quality of life of the society. Examples of this reality appears in medicine and engineering areas, where the computer-assisted techniques works together to solve many healthcare problems. In the surgical procedures context as well, as in dental implant planning, the surgeon still determine some parameters according to his personal experience, where only the visualization of the problems through Computed Tomography images are not enough to ensure the success of the procedure. Thus, this research aims to propose a computational model, as a decision support tool, in order to define a more appropriate positioning for dental implants. This is a fundamental part to determination of the necessary parameters for the process planning because the information is obtained automatically straight from image processing. The prototype presented in this work comprises a user-friendly interface, which allows dentists to observe the bone and dental structure in multi-perspective images. Also, it determines the implant location by an automatic procedure without intervention of dentist. The text shows a study case with the autonomous determination of an implant position. © 2015 IEEE.

Socio-biodiversity supply chain: Sustainable practices of a Brazilian cosmetic company

The purpose of this article is to analyze and describe sustainable practices based on biodiversity assets adopted by one of the largest global cosmetics company, located in Brazil. The company occupies the 19th position of the Global Ranking 100 Sustainability. The research method is bibliographic research that employed open, non-classified documents publicized by the company. The main findings of the study underscore the relevance of the rural communities in developing a supply chain based on biodiversity as well as the importance of the relationships among the tiers to implement a sustainable business model. The company relies on high-quality products associated with environmental development. Currently, biodiversity suppliers account for 80% circa of natural raw materials, the so-called biodiversity asset, which represents the core of the sustainable business model of the company. The findings can be generalized by helping other supply chains to develop and implement sustainable business models supported by biodiversity. Such type of a model can help companies achieve expressive business performance and, at the same time, social relevance to peripheral or vulnerable rural communities. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC

Spare Parts Replacement Policy Based on Chaotic Models

Poisson point processes are widely used to model the consumption of spare parts. However, when the items have very low consumption rates, the historical sample sizes are too small. This paper presents a modelling technique for spare parts policies in the case of items with a low consumption rate. We propose the use of chaotic models derived from the well-known chaotic processes logistic map and Hénon attractor to assess the behaviour of a set of five medium voltage motors supplying four drives in the rolling mill of a steelmaking plant. Supported by the chaotic models, we conclude that the company needs an additional motor to ensure full protection against shortages. © 2018
