Complexity measurement in two supply chains with different competitive priorities

Complexity measurement based on the Shannon information entropy is widely used to evaluate variety and uncertainty in supply chains. However, how to use a complexity measurement to support control actions is still an open issue. This article presents a method to calculate the relative complexity, i.e., the relationship between the current and the maximum possible complexity in a Supply Chain. The method relies on unexpected information requirements to mitigate uncertainty. The article studies two real-world Supply Chains of the footwear industry, one competing by cost and quality, the other by flexibility, dependability, and innovation. The second is twice as complex as the first, showing that competitive priorities influence the complexity of the system and that lower complexity does not ensure competitivity. © 2019, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. A case study on continuous process control based on fuzzy logic and supported by expert knowledge is proposed. The aim is to control the coal-grinding operations in a cement manufacturing plant. Fuzzy logic is based on linguistic variables that emulate human judgment and can solve complex modeling problems subject to uncertainty or incomplete information. Fuzzy controllers can handle control problems when an accurate model of the process is unavailable, ill-defined, or subject to excessive parameter variations. The system implementation resulted in productivity gains and energy consumption reductions of 3% and 5% respectively, in line with the literature related to similar applications. © 2018

Increasing costs and excess demand are typical characteristics of health services, especially those related to social assistance in developing countries. This context leads to the discussion of alternatives addressing loss mitigation and increments on production efficiency, concepts akin to the field of Operations Management. Lean health care addresses such concepts focusing on the improvement of health care efficiency, especially in critical services, such as E.R. and surgery room services. Nevertheless, the typology of losses, which drives the notion of efficiency improvement, still lacks better analysis and translation to this context. Based on a literature review of 63 indexed journal articles, published between 2006 and 2014, and on field observations of critical processes in Brazilian health care organizations, this study aims to identify the limiting elements of efficiency on such services and discuss the typology of losses under the perspective of hospital environments.

Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) with Variable Speed Limits (VSL) is a freeway traffic control method which aims to maximize throughput by regulating the mainstream flow upstream from a bottleneck. Recent studies in a macroscopic simulator have shown optimal and feedback MTFC potential to improve traffic conditions. In this paper, local feedback MTFC is applied in microscopic simulation for an on-ramp merge bottleneck. Traffic behavior reveals important aspects that had not been previously captured in macroscopic simulation. Mainly, the more realistic VSL application at specific points instead of along an entire freeway section produces a slower traffic response to speed limit changes. In addition, the nonlinear speed limit-flow relation observed in the microscopic model is more pronounced than what was observed at the macroscopic level. After appropriate modifications in the control law significant improvements in traffic conditions were obtained. © 2013 IEEE.

ABSTRACTHybrid energy projects are gaining global interest due to their potential to promote sustainable development. This study addresses a gap in the literature by proposing a stochastic model that assesses the economic feasibility of a hybrid energy system combining wind, photovoltaic generation, and battery storage. Unlike traditional deterministic approaches, the model incorporates uncertainties in key financial and operational variables, improving decision-making in real-world conditions. The optimization framework integrates Design of Experiments (DoE), Response Surface Methodology (RSM), and the Desirability function to balance economic return and financial risk. By maximizing the mean and minimizing the variance of the Net Present Value (NPV), the model identifies an optimal system configuration with 92% wind energy, a demand level of 230 kWh/month, and lithium-ion battery storage. This approach reduces computational complexity and enhances hybrid system viability in regions with strong wind resources, providing a valuable tool for investors and policymakers in sustainable energy planning.

Energy supply and mobility are necessary functions of economic development and have become global latent themes concerning sustainability. In the electricity sector renewable energy technologies, such as solar photovoltaic (PV), have grown significantly over its competitors in terms of investment in the past 20 years. Still, adoption of the technology has not grown quickly enough to decarbonize the sector. In the mobility sector, however, combustion engines have been replaced with electric vehicles (EV), illustrating a greater potential to mitigate emission of polluting gases. Still, the production of EV technology can yield high emissions. Instead of either technology working separately, both PV and EV may be able to cooperate in a manner where PV systems power clean electricity to produce and charge EV batteries until they return to a stationary storing system (i.e., second life) for PV systems. The following study investigates the use of EV batteries for PV systems, assessing the possible toxic effects on the environment from manufacturing, using, and disposing the technology. A review of peer-reviewed articles shed light on possible hazards of clean technologies in the energy and mobility sectors. Findings suggest the diffusion of clean technologies must be accompanied by policies that guarantee responsible disposal of them. The study concludes that advanced technological mechanisms for renewable energy may have significantly negative and sometimes obscured environmental impacts, which must be considered in future policies advocating for those technologies. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Based on the swarm intelligence theory, this paper discusses the use of PSO approaches using an operator and based on the Gaussian probability distribution function as a population space of a cultural algorithm, called cultural Gaussian PSO (GPSO-CA). Cultural algorithms are mechanisms that incorporate domain knowledge obtained during the evolutionary process, which increase the efficiency of the search process. These approaches are employed in a well-studied continuous optimization problem of mechanical engineering design. © 2006 IEEE.

Recently, evolutionary algorithms (e.g. genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, and evolution strategies) have proven to be useful tools for the optimization of difficult problems in electromagnetics. Differential evolution (DE) is one comparatively simple variant of an evolutionary algorithm using floating-point encoding and few control parameters. This work presents improved DE algorithms based on linearly time varying control parameters, sinusoidal functions, and diversity analysis of population. © 2006 IEEE.
