This paper presents a new discrete-time sliding-mode control design for multiple-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with tuning parameters by particle swarm optimization (PSO). PSO is a kind of evolutionary algorithm based on a population of individuals and motivated by the simulation of social behavior instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Several control algorithms are presented, two decoupling design and six new approaches of the coupling design of sliding-mode control without the necessity of calculate the process interactor matrix. SMC needs a design tool for parameter configuration and efficient practically to deal with multivariable processes. Simulations are carried out using both decoupling and coupling discrete-time SMC designs. Results shown that the new proposed approach for designing the discrete-time coupling SMC is a powerful tool and it performs better than the decoupling design, usually utilized in MIMO process. The simulations are assessed on a robotic manipulator of two degree-of-freedom (2-DOF), that constitute a MIMO nonlinear coupling dynamic system, with treatment of payload mass and link length variations. Simulation results show that the application of this control strategy effectively improve the trajectory tracking precision of position and velocity variables. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

Advanced conceptions to design industrial control systems are, in general, dependent of mathematical models of the controlled process. Also, the task of the controllers is to achieve an optimum performance when facing with various types of disturbances that are, sometimes, unknown in practical applications. An advanced methodology for control design is the variable structure control (VSC) with sliding mode. This paper considers the non-linear control of industrial processes based on self-tuning discrete VSC technique. A novel and systematic VSC design methodology is proposed, which integrates an estimator based on recursive least square algorithm, a discrete quasi-sliding surface and a optimization method. Contrary to the trial and error selection of the variable structure feedback gains reported in the literature, the selection in present work is done using differential evolution (DE) optimization, an evolutionary computation technique, with a new operator based on normative knowledge of cultural algorithms. The proposed design has been applied to a control valve described by a non-linear Wiener model. Numerical simulation results reveal that the new DE approach is applicable and promising for the VSC design. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm that shares many similarities with evolutionary computation techniques. However, the PSO is driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor motivated by collective behaviours of bird and other social organisms instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Inspired by the classical PSO method and quantum mechanics theories, this work presents new Quantum-behaved PSO (QPSO) approaches using mutation operator with exponential probability distribution. The simulation results demonstrate good performance of the QPSO in solving a well-studied continuous optimization problem of mechanical engineering design. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

The global agribusiness context faces at the same time challenges of feeding a growing global population that is used to safe and nutritious food, opportunities based on innovation, high technology and efficiency in the agri-food production systems from field to table. Given the context, this article aims to present the main key aspects of the circular economy to agro-industrial cooperatives. These contributions were named key aspects, such as circular and symbiotic practices, competitive advantages, innovation, cooperation and barriers and opportunities. The field presents a problem that few literature in fact discusses circular economy approaches in the context of agro-industrial cooperatives. As a methodological procedure, a literature review was carried out in three databases to obtain relevant documents and thus analyse and discuss some characteristics based on circular economy practices applied in agro-industrial cooperatives. As a result, a diagnosis of the current scenario that agro sector organizations are facing in terms of the main rural activities and sustainable practices that relate to the circular economy;measures taken to generate competitive advantage;innovation behaviour;and how linear and circular business models are being applied in the agroindustry. A framework is presented to show potential routes strategies for closing the cycle in an agro-industrial cooperative. The opportunities are based on the implementation of high technology in the field, the use of bioenergy and the development of new circular business models throughout the agro-value chain. The study has contributions to rural properties and managers of cooperatives in terms of waste reduction, innovation generation and increases in activities and processes based on circular economy. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The classical approaches to teach the control systems present drawbacks, such as: (i) the general overview of the problem is sometimes underemphasized by the knowledge acquisition; (ii) they mainly use the academic examples that are only dealing with simple concepts and problems; (iii) laboratory experiments are either simple or under developed. Design aspects of control systems when applied to practical processes are important to improve the knowledge of the students and to motivate the utilization of modern methodologies as an emergent technology for the applications in industry. In this work, we point out some important aspects for conceiving a new educational product. We describe our experiences in creating a didactic environment for teaching and learning the control theories in engineering courses based on CACSD (computer aided control system design) and its extension to the research field of industrial problems. Two distinct proposals arise from these experiences for reducing the gap between the theoretical and practical classes, and for teaching the control systems development cycle using mathematical tools and real plants under the virtual instrumentation concept.

This paper presents a diagnosis framework based on a qualitative model of the process. Starting from a dynamic abstraction procedure under a defined operating mode a fuzzy partitioning of the variables evolution is made, defining for each measured or observable variable a number of qualitative states. Then time Fuzzy intervals representing the moment of state change are defined. The process behaviour of the operating mode is represented by Time Fuzzy Petri nets (TFPN) model and its evolution is the consequence of events detection due to the partitioning bounds crossing. According to the membership possibility of an event to the estimated time interval and to fuzzy influence knowledge, it is possible to reason about a fault occurrence. The fuzzy data issue from the TFPN components allows evaluating the causes of the fault or failure mode. A model-based diagnosis of a hybrid system is presented.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Based on the swarm intelligence theory, this paper discusses the use of PSO with a Quasi-Newton (QN) local search method. The PSO is used to produce good potential solutions, and the QN is used to fine-tune of final solution of PSO. The hybrid methodology is validated for a test system consisting of 13 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects.

The rampant use of resources and the increasing risk of scarcity have been contributing to greater awareness regarding the need for maintaining resources in use for longer and the shift to renewable alternatives, in which perspective the concept of a circular bioeconomy (CBE) has been permeating the most diverse sectors. Therefore, the study’s aims were manifold: identify (i) existing practices and initiatives, (ii) barriers and potential opportunities and (iii) existing gaps for advancing a circular bioeconomy in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and (iv) provide recommendations aiming at the development of a circular bioeconomy (CBE) in the region. To that end, a systematic review of the existing academic literature was done, and reports from relevant non-peer reviewed sources were also consulted. CBE practices in LAC are concentrated in only a few of the countries in the region and very much revolve around recovering value from by-products and waste streams. There are a range of economic, technological, environmental, and social barriers. Opportunities for a CBE are mainly related to the use of waste as raw material (found abundantly in the countries being investigated) and the use of new techniques/technologies. The gaps between the current state and a successful CBE are related to policy, scaling-up, collaborations, and establishing efficient business models. Recommendations for a successful CBE in the region include greater engagement of public actors, investing and developing the local economy, establishing biorefineries and industrial parks, and finding new technological routes for bioresources. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

WebLabs, or Remotely Operated Laboratories, allow for remote control and monitoring of interactive or batched systems with educational objectives. Considered as additional resources in education, they contribute to a flexible learning model and make possible for students to perform laboratory experiments remotely, off-class, in collaboration, thus contributing to the reduction of laboratory equipment idleness. The purpose of this paper is to report steps in designing and enabling a WebLab with background theme on the control and monitoring of thermal comfort parameters in a newborn baby incubator. Three didactical experiments can be performed in this WebLab: transfer function evaluation, on-off control and PID controller tuning, with users challenged to optimally tune the parameters of a controller algorithm. In the end of the session, the user can enter his/her impressions regarding the WebLab usage by answering a questionnaire. The WebLab design includes the evaluation of students' abilities through performance indexes while keeping operation within the requirements of an associated medical safety standard. A systematic approach for the WebLab design process has been employed, with the system design split in three layers: physical system, hardware and software. Sets of qualitative and quantitative requirements to be attended were defined. System and product design techniques, such as House of Quality, Morphological Matrix and Pugh's Method, have been employed to address the conversion of the project requirements into the Weblab overall solution. Virtual Instrumentation resources have been used to acquire temperature, humidity and air speed signals. The LabVIEW platform was used to support experiment integration and to create the user interface using LabVIEW Remote Panel architecture. The WebLab has been successfully implemented and presently can be accessed within the university network.
