Introduction: Assessing lower limb (LL) muscle strength in children and adolescents is commonly performed using manual muscle testing. However, the feasibility of using a modified sphygmomanometer test (MST) for this population and the optimal testing method for clinical practice remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the best way to operationalize LL muscle strength measurements with MST in children and adolescents. Methods: This methodological study included children (6–12 years) and adolescents (13–18 years). Two MST methods—one with and one without bag adaptation—were randomly applied by a trained, blinded evaluator. Maximum isometric strength was assessed through three repetitions for seven LL muscle groups (hip flexion, extension, and abduction;ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion;knee flexion and extension) on both the dominant and non-dominant sides. Each contraction lasted 5 s with standardized verbal cues. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests analyzed differences between the first attempt, the average of two attempts, the average of three attempts, and the maximum value of three trials. Results: A total of 64 individuals participated: 32 children (8.62 ± 1.77 years) and 32 adolescents (16.41 ± 2.19 years). No significant differences were found between MST operationalization methods (with or without bag adaptation) or between measurement approaches (ANOVA: 0.17≥F ≤ 1.07;0.36≥p ≤ 0.91;Kruskal-Wallis: 0.71≥X ≤ 3.35;0.34≥p ≤ 0.86). Conclusion: A single MST measurement is sufficient for assessing LL muscle strength in children and adolescents, making the test a practical and reliable alternative for clinical practice. © 2025

Effect of different resistance increments during warm-up on the snatch performance of male weightlifters

This study investigated the effect of different resistance increments during warm-up on snatch performance of male weightlifters. Nine male college weightlifters were recruited. The 3 warm-up protocols were performed every 7 days with a randomized order: 1. Power snatch exercise with 10 % resistance increment (50 %, 60 %, 70 %, and 80 % of one-repetition maximum);2. Power snatch exercise with 15 % resistance increment (50 %, 65 %, and 80 % of one-repetition maximum);3. Self-selected resistance increment. Participants were tested based on 85 % maximum weight snatch after warm-up. Snatch performance was measured using peak vertical ground reaction force. Postural stability was measured using center-of-pressure displacement. Activation of seven shoulder, back, and leg muscles was measured using electromyography on the dominant side. In snatch performance, the 10 % increment protocol had a significantly higher peak vertical ground reaction force during the second-pull phase than the 15 % increment (d = 0.92, p < 0.05) and self-selected (d = 1.32, p < 0.05) protocols. In postural stability, no significant differences in center-of-pressure displacement among the three protocols were observed. For muscle activation, the 10 % increment protocol resulted in significantly higher activation of shoulder (d = 1.2–2.2, p < 0.05) during the second-pull phase than the other two protocols and higher activation of hip muscles (d = 1.73, p < 0.05) than self-selected protocol. To conclude, a warm-up protocol combining slow progression is preferable in improving power output during snatch in male weightlifters, probably through facilitating the activation of proximal limb muscles. It can enhance training quality while potentially reducing the risk of sports injuries. © 2024 The Authors

Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are considered the most common complaint associaetd with orofacial pain. A treatment approach for TMD is photobiomodulation auriculotherapy, however, a method that which still requires studies mainly with pulsed frequency. Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of conducting a randomized clinical trial using pulsed frequency photobiomodulation auriculotherapy and determine the relevant sample size. Methods: The study was a controlled randomized pilot study. Twenty one volunteers with TMD were randomized into experimental and placebo groups. The evaluation periods were pre-intervention and again after four weeks. The instruments used for the assessment were axis I (mandibular movement measurements [MMM]) and axis II (Graded Chronic Pain Scale [GCPS], Jaw functional Limitation Scale [JFLS-8], The Patient Health Questionnaire [PHQ-4], and Generalized Anxiety Disorder [GAD-7]) from Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Mann–Whitney and Wilcoxon tests were used for comparison of groups. The intervention protocol was performed once a week for foour weeks. Results: The GCPS question about “pain at this exact moment” indicated lower values for the treated group compared to the placebo group (U = 15.50;p = 0.005) after the intervention. The calculation of the total sample was 22 volunteers. The JFLS-8 variable showed no difference between the groups and the sample calculation ranged from 39 to 281 volunteers. The MMM showed no difference between the groups, and the calculation of the necessary sample ranged from 27 to 2.317. The variable PHQ-4 (U = 21.00;p = 0.02) and GAD-7 (U = 20.00;p = 0.02) showed differences between groups with type I error. The required sample was 22 volunteers for PHQ-4 and 25 for GAD-7. Conclusion: We conclude that this study is feasible and that the required sample should be 11 volunteers for each group in the GCPS subitem “pain intensity at this exact moment”. We were able to f

Human movement analysis is crucial in health and sports biomechanics for understanding physical performance, guiding rehabilitation, and preventing injuries. However, existing tools are often proprietary, expensive, and function as "black boxes", limiting user control and customization. This paper introduces vailá—Versatile Anarcho Integrated Liberation Ánalysis in Multimodal Toolbox—an open-source, Python-based platform designed to enhance human movement analysis by integrating data from multiple biomechanical systems. vailá supports data from diverse sources, including retroreflective motion capture systems, inertial measurement units (IMUs), markerless video capture technology, electromyography (EMG), force plates, and GPS/GNSS systems, enabling comprehensive analysis of movement patterns. Developed entirely in Python 3.11.9, which offers improved efficiency and long-term support, and featuring a straightforward installation process, vailá is accessible to users without extensive programming experience. In this paper, we also present several workflow examples that demonstrate how vailá allows the rapid processing of large batches of data, independent of the type of collection method. This flexibility is especially valuable in research scenarios where unexpected data collection challenges arise, ensuring no valuable data point is lost. We demonstrate the application of vailá in analyzing sit-to-stand movements in pediatric disability, showcasing its capability to provide deeper insights even with unexpected movement patterns. By fostering a collaborative and open environment, vailá encourages users to innovate, customize, and freely explore their analysis needs, potentially contributing to the advancement of rehabilitation strategies and performance optimization. QUALITY OF LIFE OF CAREGIVERS OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH CANCER

BackgroundChildren and adolescents with cancer have to deal with the adverse events of the disease and treatments, and low immunity predisposes them to the development of serious forms of infections, that can cause physical damage, negative repercussions on health care and on the quality of life of them and their caregivers. ObjectivesTo evaluate the quality of life of caregivers of children and adolescents with cancer. MethodsObservational, cross-sectional study, carried out from October to December 2022. We used social media, WhatsApp, and emails to invite caregivers of children and adolescents with cancer aged between 2 and 21 years. The survey was performed remotely, through the application of an online form that contained personal and sociodemographic data, the SF-36 questionnaire for assessing the quality of life of the caregivers. ResultsThirty caregivers participated in the study, with a higher prevalence of females (86.7%). The caregiver's quality of life averaged 55.15 (SD=20.35), which represents a moderate to low quality of life. The worst quality of life scores of caregivers was observed in the domains "Vitality (45.17±XX)", "Emotional Aspects (45.55±XX)", and "Limitation due to physical Aspects (48.33±XX)". ConclusionThe quality of life of the caregivers of children and adolescents with cancer was moderate to low, related to impairment of vitality, emotional aspects, and limitation due to physical aspects. Strategies to improve the quality of life of caregivers of children and adolescents with cancer should be considered, therefore improving the integral care for this population and the caregivers. ImplicationsConducting further studies on quality of life in relation to other health conditions that may affect physically and mentally caregivers of individuals with childhood cancer may provide help to develop personalized rehabilitation programs for family's pediatric cancer patients.

Factors associated with capability and performance in children with neurodevelopmental disorders: an exploratory cross-sectional study

BackgroundChildren with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) have a lower level of independence and major need of assistance to perform daily living skills is one the main concerns of caregivers and therapists of children, adolescents and adults with these *** identify factors associated with capability and performance in self-care, mobility and social activities in children with *** cross-sectional study was performed with 96 children with NDD, most were male (69.8%), with a mean age of 8.53 (± 1.83) years. The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory was used to evaluate capability and performance outcomes. The explanatory variables were intellectual function, motor skills, economic level, and maternal education. Stepwise multiple linear regression models were *** motor skills were the main factor that explained self-care, mobility and social function capability outcomes and, self-care and mobility performance outcomes (p< 0.05). The intellectual function explained only the social function performance outcome (p< 0.05). Moreover, highest economic extracts increased the explanation of *** findings are relevant to understanding the factors associated with performance and capability and performance in self-care, mobility and social activities to help clinicians to make an informed decision based on the best practice evidence for these children. An expanded assessment of functioning and of the environmental factors is necessary to help the planning interventions to improve capability and performance of the children with NDD.

Background:There is a growing interest to understand the neurobiological mechanisms that drive the positive associations of physical activity and fitness with measures of cognitive *** better understand those mechanisms,several studies have employed eye-based measures(e.g., eye movement measures such as saccades,pupillary measures such as pupil dilation,and vascular measures such as retinal vessel diameter)deemed to be proxies for specific neurobiological ***,there is currently no systematic review providing a comprehensive overview of these studies in the field of exercise-cognition ***,this review aimed to address that gap in the ***:To identify eligible studies,we searched 5 electronic databases on October 23,*** researchers independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise(TESTEX scale,for interventional studies) and the critical appraisal tool from the Joanna Briggs Institute(for cross-sectional studies).Results:Our systematic review(n=35 studies) offers the following main findings:(a) there is insufficient evidence available to draw solid conclusions concerning gaze-fixation-based measures;(b) the evidence that pupillometric measures,which are a proxy for the noradrenergic system,can explain the positive effect of acute exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness on cognitive performance is mixed;(c) physical training-or fitness-related changes of the cerebrovascular system(operationalized via changes in retinal vasculature) are,in general,positively associated with cognitive performance improvements;(d) acute and chronic physical exercises show a positive effect based on an oculomotor-based measure function(operationalized via antisaccade tasks);and(e) the positive association between cardiorespiratory fitness and cognitive performance is partly mediated by the dopaminergic system(operationalized via spo

BackgroundType 2 diabetes (T2DM) is the most prevalent type of diabetes worldwide. Its treatment aims to control glycemic levels, with regular physical exercise being one of its pillars. The hypoglycemic effect of physical exercise varies according to the intensity, duration, type, and time of day it is performed. ObjectivesSynthesize the scientific evidence on the effect of a single session of continuous (AEc) or interval (AEi) aerobic exercise and/or resistance exercise (RE) on post-exercise glycemia in individuals with T2DM. MethodsThe study protocol (CRD42022289985) followed PRISMA guidelines. The search strategies were elaborated from the acronym PICO (P: individuals ≥ 18 years old with DM2; I: a single session of aerobic and/or resistance exercise; C: no exercise or any exercise that did not meet the characteristics of the intervention; O: glycemia measured before and up to 24h post-exercise). The electronic databases CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Google Scholar, LILACS, MEDLINE/Ovid, SciELO, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science were searched, including randomized and non-randomized clinical trials published from the inception of the databases until February 2022, without limitation of language. The “Risk of Bias” tool was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. Reduction or no significant change in post-exercise glycemia is expressed as (↓) or (↔), respectively. Results25 articles published between 1997 and 2021 were included from 6,237 retrieved from the literature. The total sample consisted of 424 participants (men = 290, women = 119, unreported = 15) aged between 21 and 70 years, with mean values of glycated hemoglobin between 6.0±0.3% and 10.4± 3.0% and body mass index between 22.2±2.3 and 37.0±5.7 kg/m². The duration of the exercise sessions varied between 10 and 60 minutes, with moderate to high intensities, and most (72%) were performed in the morning. BackgroundThe Modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) was developed as a dynamic postural control test, has been shown to be predictive of lower limb injuries and is consolidated as a valid and reliable measure. However, the relationship between hip variables and mSEBT performance has not been fully elucidated. Deficits in muscle function, flexibility, and range of motion (ROM) of passive medial rotation (MR) of the hip can compromise the performance of mSEBTs. ObjectivesTo verify whether function, flexibility and passive ROM of hip MR predict mSEBT performance in athletes and practitioners of physical activity. MethodsThe database of the Physiotherapy Assessment Tool (PHAST) application was used to analyze the records of 125 patients. The relationship of the variables was verified, using multiple linear regression: function of hip extensors, gluteus medius and maximus, the flexibility of iliopsoas, rectus femoris and hamstrings, as well as passive ROM of medial rotation MR hip of the dominant limb with recordings of anterior, posteromedial, and lateral reach distance, as well as mSEBT composite score. ResultsThe results revealed a statistically significant model for hip extensor function predicting mSEBT performance in 6% for the composite score (F = 8.07; R = 0.24; R²= 0.062; p = 0.005), in 7% for the posterolateral reach distance (F = 9.18; R = 0.26; R²= 0.070; p = 0.003), by 7% for the posteromedial reach (F = 9.12; R = 0. 26; R²= 0.069; p = 0.003). The association of hip extensor function with gluteus medius function predicted mSEBT performance by 13% for posteromedial reach distance (F = 9.40; R = 0.36; R²= 0.13; p = 0.000). No other associations of hip variables were observed. ConclusionHip extensor function has a statistically significant, but weak, association with mSEBT composite score performance and posterolateral and medial reaching distances. Background: Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) has become popular over the past years;however, few studies investigated the prevalence of injuries in this martial art modality. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in BJJ competitors, along with their profile and characteristics. Methods: One hundred fifteen athletes were included in this cross-sectional study. A hundred fifteen professional high-performance athletes were selected from twenty-five BJJ gyms in São Paulo, Brazil. Descriptive analyses were used to demonstrate the athlete’s characteristics. The Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test was used to assess the significant differences between the number of injuries categorized by athlete’s belt or performance level category. Additionally, Fisher’s exact test was used to assess possible differences between the belts' frequency of total injuries and injuries per affected site. Results: We observed an injury prevalence of 85.2%, in which the knee (32.6%), shoulder (11.2%), and elbow (8.4%) were the most affected regions. We did not find any significant differences between the number of injuries and belt classification (p=0.093) or the frequency of total injuries per anatomical region among belt classification (p=0.121). Most injuries occurred during training (74%), and the main reason for time loss from training activities was trauma (70%). Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of injuries among BJJ competitors, and the most affected site was the knee. © 2023 Nery et al.
